Programming a micro:bit with help from Sky!

As part of National Digital Learning Week, today Shona and Craig from Sky joined Primary 4 and 5 to share their knowledge of programming a micro:bit.

A micro:bit is a tiny programmable computer, designed to make learning and teaching easy and fun! Some of us even managed to programme it to say our names.

A big thank you to Shona and Craig for showing us this new piece of hardware, we were impressed how we used our prior knowledge of programming in order to use the micro:bit.

They also shared with children information about their jobs at Sky and what skills and experience they need.

Uphall Station Gala Day

The Uphall Station Gala Day Committee would like to invite our school/nursery children to their annual Gala Day on Saturday 8th June 2019.

The parade will leave from Beechwood Grove, at 12.30pm. The committee have requested that all walkers be at the starting point for no later than 12.00pm to allow everyone to be organised. The route should take no longer than an hour and is suitable for all ages.

We would like to encourage as many of our children and parents to walk in the parade. All children should be accompanied by a parent/carer throughout the parade it is along a main road. Stewards and police will also be in attendance. Mrs Cougan will also be there to meet the children with the school banner.

Miss Burton been asked to lead the parade this year in recognition of  her achieving the permanent post of Head teacher. As this is a fantastic honour for our school, she would like to invite the House and Vice Captains to walk with her in leading the parade

The theme is Tropical “so everyone is encouraged to dress up as colourfully as they can.

Following the parade a fun day will take place including annual traditional races. These will commence at 1.30pm in Marrfield Park and there are many opportunities for everyone to participate. Entertainment will include inflatables, bouncy castles, toddler zone, disco dome, trampolines and small traditional stalls. P4-7 Visit the New Pump Track

In order to support health and safety and assessing risk at the new Pump Track beside our school we have taken P4-7 over for a visit. Although the Pump Track is not part of our school we know it is very tempting for our children on their way to and from school, so we wanted to support them with making decisions about the track.

First of all we discussed tips Miss Burton had previously shared with us:

  • ALWAYS wear a helmet, and elbow and knee pads.
  • Ask permission from your parents/ carers.
  • Only use your own bike/ scooter.
  • Read the safety signs.
  • Don’t use the track before school, unless agreed with your parent/ carer.
  • Don’t walk on the track if people are cycling.

We read the safety signs at the track.

We risk assessed the track, to discuss which parts we thought might be tricky.

Then we walked, fast walked or jogged around the track. This helped to give us a feel for what the track is like. Some of us even thought it would be good to do our daily mile on the track.

Some of our children who are very confident at using the track, volunteered to take part in a photo shot to promote the track by West Lothian Council. You will see that they are all wearing a helmet.
