Fraser Park Pump Track

You will be aware that the West Lothian Council Pump Track is now open. Although it is close to the school it is not part of our school property and is part of a public park.

At assembly on Friday I explained to the children that they should:

  • wear protective gear when using the track including a helmet
  • ask permission from their parent/ carer before using the track
  • be coming straight to school in the mornings as their parent/ carer will be expecting them to go to breakfast club/ supervised playground.

As a school we will:

  • use our junior leadership groups to make an advice video about how to safely use the track
  • continue to work with the community council into how we can use the track
  • look into partnerships with organisations who can support the school and community with developing the children’s pump track skills on how to use it safely.
  • give P4-7 the opportunity to walk around the pump track in their trainers so they can get a feel for what it is like
  • go over the safety sign with P4-7 children.

Some tips on using the track are:

  • Follow the safety rules on the sign that is positioned beside the track
  • Encourage your children to walk or run around the track in their trainers before they take their scooter or bike anywhere near it. This is something that expert mountain-bikers do when they try out a new route, so they know what features are there, how it feels to be on the track, where any riskier or more challenging elements are and to make sure they are prepared for it.
  • Children should also be very comfortable and confident with how to control their speed on their wheeled ‘vehicle’, beforethey try out the track. It is not a good idea to try out a new bike/scooter/skateboard/skates on the track. It is best to wait until they have been tried out elsewhere and then use the track.
  • If children really want to use the track but are not very confident, they can start at one of the low points on the track, rather than at the official starting area up high, and stay low on the track (i.e. do not go too high up on the corners). That way they can get a feel for the track without starting off at speed and they will not generate quite so much speed as they go round. It does mean that they will have to pedal, but as they get more confident, they can start higher up and pedal less.

This is an exciting opportunity for our community, however it is important to me that the safety of our children comes first.

Families Learning Together 3

We had a fantastic turn out for our third Families Learning Together session last week. Families joined their children so they could share their learning in their jotters so far this term. They also had the opportunities to give two stars and a wish about their learning. Thank you to everyone who made it along.

Thank you to our P7 Young Leaders who helped out at this event.

P6 STEM

Primary 6 have been enjoying lots of STEM related learning this term. We started the term with our Scottish Inventors topic and are looking forward to sharing our learning from this in our class assembly this Friday morning. We have now started a new topic on the Solar System and had fun including visitors from home in our learning last week. We are learning about the planets in our Solar System and have been researching planets of our choice. Here are some interesting facts we have already discovered:

  • Darci found out that Saturn has 62 moons and Gillon discovered that Pluto has 5 moons (compared to Earth’s one). Eilidh and Amber’s research showed that Mars’s 2 moons are called Phobos and Deimos.
  • Samuel’s research showed that the atmosphere of Mars is made up of mostly carbon dioxide, while Jamie’s showed that Jupiter’s atmosphere consists mainly of hydrogen and helium.
  • Mia discovered that the surface of Mars is covered in a fine dust similar to talcum powder.
  • Amen found out that Saturn has a radius of 58, 232 km and it is 1.434 billion km from the Sun.
  • Summer discovered that Mercury has a surface area of 74.8 million square kilometres.
  • Samantha’s researched the dwarf planet of Eris and found that one year on Eris is the same as 557 years on Earth.

Sharing Our STEM Learning

On Wednesday 13th March we invited our families to come and share our STEM Learning with us. They joined in lots of different activities with their children, you can see some the learning opportunities below.

Thank you to everyone who came along to join us.

Primary 7 shared some of their learning about China and how they have been comparing a school day in China to their own.

Primary 7 China topic

Feedback from our survey included:

What did you find out about your child’s learning that you did not already know?

  • That they were doing human biology.
  • My child knows more than he shows at home.
  • I saw Didbook for the first time, it’s great.
  • My child  is happy to accept help when offered

What other information would you like us to provide during Visit My Class sessions?

  • Some feedback from teachers. I feel the gap is maybe a touch long between feedback sessions.
  • If there is anything my child needs to improve on.

In what other ways can we support you to support your child at home?

Glasgow Rocks Basketball Trip!

On Sunday 17th March, our Basketball Team and some other pupils from P6 and 7 joined Mrs Hamilton, Mrs Birrell and Miss Burton on a trip to the Emirates Arena in Glasgow to see Glasgow Rocks play against the Worcester Wolves.

There was great atmosphere at the game and we really enjoyed it. Our basketball team have picked up some tips for their next game too. A big thank you to the staff who came along on a Sunday so the trip could happen.
