Primary 1 Transition Challenge

P1 met with the nursery children to share information about life in P1.  They had drawn pictures and recorded their voices using an app called ‘Our Story’.  Unfortunately, it can only be played on Ipads so we have uploaded the pictures without the audio for you to enjoy.  The nursery children asked some really good questions about P1 and were particularly interested in the big playground.

We are looking forward to seeing you in the playground in August nursery boys and girls!

Term 4 Celebration Assembly

Today we had our second Celebration Assembly to celebrate all our achievements during Term 4.

Ruby and Meg, pupils from Broxburn Academy joined us to share with us about their achievements and their journey to achievement. They reinforced our school values and how it was important to preserve to achieve your dreams, although at times you might have set backs.

We had our Dojo Top Scorers for each of our houses – they received a gift voucher for WH Smith.

Each teacher nominated a child in their class for the Remarkable Reader Award for making progress in their reading.

They also  nominated a child in their class for the STEM Superstar Award for making progress in Science, Technologies, Engineering and Maths.

We gave out Sumdog Awards for the recent West Lothian Sumdog Competition.

Out of 105 classes:

  •  17th – P7
  • 26th – P6
  •  28th – P1M

Put of 2,275 pupils:

  • 6th Hallie (P7)
  • 23rd Lucas (P6)

One child in each of our groups at P5 Camp was nominated for an achievement award.

Iona in P7 was nominated for an award for recently taking part in the Edinburgh Moonwalk and raising over £1000 for charity.

Congratulations to Breich who recieved the most Dojos in Term 4.

P3 DYW

WAL:  about the world of work.

 I can:

– explain the different roles of an increasing number of people in society.

–  explain what some jobs involve.

Last week for DYW week, we had talks from Dawn Fresh Manufacturing, a Midwife and Mrs Slzawlowska. We learned about  their jobs and what they have to do at their work.  We wrote about our own ‘Dream Job’ and what we would have to do at it.

Olivia P’ I would  like to be an Engineer and build a flying machine.’

Layla ‘I would like to be an artist and paint paintings to sell to people for their homes.’

Kieron ‘ I would like to be a builder and work on a construction site driving the machinery.’

Liam ‘ I would like to be in the Army and protect people.’ 

In pairs/trios, we also designed and created a digital character for a video game as part of a whole school challenge. We voted as a class and the two winning teams were Eve, Ryleigh & Eilidh and Rachel & Mitchell. What do you think of our designs?

We all enjoyed learning more about the world of work and taking part in the challenge.

Developing the Young Workforce Week

Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) is a programme organised by the Scottish Government  that aims to better prepare children and young people aged 3–18 for the world of work. Last week we held our annual DYW Week in order to share with our children different a range of types of jobs/ carers and the skills, qualifications and values you require to fulfill these roles.

This year we had a range of speakers and visitors from our local community and beyond. We also used a website called Founders4Schools and our contact Arlene Nicol from West Lothian DYW to find people to visit us.

The learning outcomes we explored during the week were:

Nursery – P1:

  • I can communicate with people about the different jobs they do in my community.
  • I can discuss some of the rewards that a job brings
  • I can role play different job roles.
  • I can develop ideas and take part in projects to make things.

P2-4:

  • I can describe different jobs in my community and some of the skills needed for these.
  • I can learn about the world of work from visits, projects and my experiences.
  • I can talk to employers about myself and about their workplace.
  • I can recognise that there are different ways to get a job.
  • I can talk about the types of jobs that interest me

P5-7:

  •  I can discuss the relevance of skills to the wider world and make connections between skills and the world of work.
  •  I can explain to others my ambitions/what I would like to do and look for ways to achieve them/that.
  • I can recognise the skills I have and need for work.
  • I can apply my skills to get more information about jobs/careers.
  • I can identify different types of enterprise opportunities and engage in them.

Primary 2

Digital Learning & DYW Week – ‘The Apprentice’ Challenge

What were we learning?

To create a solution for a design challenge.

How would we know if we were successful?

  • We would be able to work as a team to share ideas and make decisions fairly.
  • We would be able to make sketches of our ideas.
  • We would be able to use digital technology to create them.

What did we do?

We were challenged to create a new character for a computer game. We sketched our ideas on our own first, then worked as a group to pick the best parts of each person’s plan. We then used the ‘Cartoonify’ website to practise creating our characters digitally. When we were happy, we worked with Miss McLaughlin to finish and save them. We voted as a class to pick the two teams who would represent us in the ‘Apprentice’ challenge and they did really well at Friday’s assembly.

DYW Apprentice Assembly

This morning we held an Apprentice Assembly to mark the end of our Developing the Young Workforce Week.

Jenny Campbell from Resilience Engine started our assembly by sharing her journey with us which has resulted in her creating her own business.

Our judging  panel consisted of John Sexton (West Lothian Digital Learning Team), Arlene Nicol (West Lothian Developing the Young Workforce) and Jenny Campbell (Resilience Engine). The panel had a tough job of selecting the winners of our ‘Digital Character Challenge’.

The presentations from each class were very impressive, demonstrating how confident and creative our children are.

PUSCPS would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has made our DYW Week so successful!

We also dressed up as careers or jobs we would like to have wehn we grow up. Our visit from Barry walker inspired Katy to dress up as him, and Abbie even dressed up as Miss Burton!

P7 Digital Learning Week

Learning Intention:

To create, capture and manipulate text and images to communicate experiences, ideas and information in creative and engaging ways.

Success Criteria:

I can capture and collate images in a creative way.

As part of Digital Learning Week, P7 have been busy working on their yearbook. The children had to locate and select the images that they would like to appear in their yearbook to create paired pages about themselves. They have also been locating and selecting images to create some gallery pages of P7 learning events and experiences.

Primary 5 Digital Learning week

This week we have been using our digital expertise to research in Science and Maths.

We have been learning what the benefits of renewable energy sources are

We found out that they are cleaner for the environment, they create jobs, save money, don’t add to greenhouse gas emissions, won’t run out and make us less reliant on other countries to supply us with oil.

We have been investigating different types of triangles and their properties.

We learned that equilateral and isosceles triangles are the most commonly used triangles in engineering (Murron).  We also found out that the triangle is the strongest shape and that is why it’s used in bridges and buildings (Owen and Liam).

 

Share a Story

As part of Digital Learning Week P1m took part in an early years collaborative story.

We received the story on Wednesday then we had the exciting job of creating an ending for the story that other classes in the authority had created.

We worked in pairs to decide what we thought should happen to the characters who’d got lost at the zoo.  There were lots of fantastic of ideas and we managed to bring most of them into our ending before we saved it onto the online group. We are looking forward to receiving the finished story soon.
