Positive Relationships at PUSCPS

Last term staff and children evaluated current approaches to managing positive relationships at PUSCPS. We also took part in career long professional along with our cluster using research from Paul Dix’s book, When the adults change everything changes.

Using our evaluation and research we have now came up with a consistent approach, which is shared below. We will also explain this further at our Visit Our Class workshops (watch this space!).

Our approaches are based on reinforcing positive choices, using restorative approaches and helping to support children be responsible for their choices. We wanted our corrective actions to be immediate to give children time out to think about their consequences rather than waiting until the end of a day or a week. We also wanted  30 minutes of together time to be available each week for all children, as this is an important part of their social development with peers.

We hope you find the information below useful, and if you have any questions we look forward to answering them at Visit My Class.

Below is also information about our playground.

Our School Garden

Our school garden has flourished over the summer, look at the fabulous photos below!

Big Butterfly Count

Sarah-Jane and her family took park in the Big Butterfly Count in our school gardens. They counted 7 small and 3 large white, 3 painted lady, red admiral and 3 small tortoiseshell butterflies in 15 mins.

Our Award Winning Garden!

Last week judges from West Lothian Council visited our school to judge our school garden for the Primary School Gardening Competition.

We are delighted to announce that we received TWO awards!

  • Decorative Garden
  • Container Garden

This is a huge achievement for our school,  and a tribute to the work of Sarah-Jane and our gardening club, a big thank you to them. Well done!

Almond Pyjama Party!

Almond received the most points in term 4 and earned themselves a party, they decide on a Pyjama Party! They had corners, best dancer, pass the parcel, musical statues and food. Thank you to Lauren and Jack, and all the Primary 7s for helping to organise the party.

Primary 6 First Aid Training

Primary 6 had a fantastic time learning First Aid last week! Our instructor, Stefan, taught us what to do to assist a casualty, including how to put them into a recovery position and to perform CPR. We also learned how to apply bandages for different wounds and what to do if someone was choking. Everyone did a great job when practising these skills on the dummies and on each other!

This week in writing, we have been using what we learned to write instructions on how to approach and help a casualty.

Our School Garden

Over the last few months we have been working hard in our school garden. After school garden club, Club Wild and the P1s and P2s have all been busy using their green fingers to prepare the beds, plant seeds and make signs ready for the growing season. This year we are going crazy for colour to brighten up our playground.
In the vegetable patch we have been looking at the different plant families, roots, tubers, fruits, leafy, bulbs, stems, flowering and pulses. Gardeners use these families to group plants with the parts that we eat. Our potatoes, broad beans, onions and peas are already looking great. The broad beans have a beautiful dark pink flower which is attracting lots of bees and if you watch quietly you might see the sparrows feeding babies nesting in the bird box.
Around the playground colours are popping up everywhere. At after school garden club we have been thinking about different colours and what things we see in nature are that colour. We started with red and planted poppies, strawberries and nasturtium and we painted coconut ladybirds to decorate the fence. Mrs Brady gave us some red sunflowers. I wonder how tall they will grow. We went on to think about and plant blue, green, pink, purple, orange and yellow zones in the playground.
This year we have also been using the herbs that we have growing in the garden and school grounds. The P2s learned about the healing properties of plants such as lavender, willow bark, eucalyptus, feverfew, and sage amongst others. The children made their own medicine for Molly, the class doll who was unwell.
We have also been working on our wild flower patch that we planted a few years ago. Club Wild had great fun making seed bombs and throwing them, along with making butterfly feeders.
Our rich and colourful garden is wonderful for the children and all our visiting wildlife. Please help us to look after this valuable and well loved resource.

Resilience Film Screening

We would like to invite you to view a short film on Thursday 20th June at 6pm.  The film is about resilience in children, an issue that many schools across West Lothian have been focussing on and will continue to focus on in the coming sessions.  The film, which has already been shown to many of our professionals in education and health, aims to provide an understanding of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the impact that these can have on children and their education.

We will also screen a children’s film in the hall where children of primary school age will be supervised to allow adults to attend the resilience film screening in the P7 classroom.  Tea and coffee will also be available.

In order to help us to plan catering and supervision requirements, please contact our office and let them know you would like to attend.

We look forward to welcoming you then.
