P5: The Scottish Landscape
We are learning to:
LI: Create a powerpoint slide
SC: I can… have a bold title
I can… have interesting facts
I can… have eye catching pictures
As part of their topic the children had to create a powerpoint to encourage tourists to come back and visit Scotland after the Covona virus. Their second outcome was a digital focus.
We are learning to:
LI: Develop our digital skills
SC: I can… use the snipping tool
The children had to use the snipping tool to capture images of Scotland to include in their powerpoint. We decided the top 3 powerpoints would be sent to Visit Scotland to let them see our skills and see if we were developing the correct skills to become part of the work force when we are older. It was very difficult to pick as all of the posters were really good. All of the powerpoints are in the P5 team if you want to have a look.
We sent our letter to Visit Scotland and this is a reply whicwe received:
Dear Mrs Campbell,
Thank you so much for sending me you pupils’ work as part of their Scotland landscape topic and especially on how we would attract visitors back to Scotland after Covid.
I think the class has done an excellent job and made some really lovely choices of pictures and joined them up with lots of interesting facts. From walking and fishing to the Harry Potter train and Nessie spotting, there’s something for everyone in there!
I thought you might like to share with the class one other favourite of visitors to Scotland – the Highland Coo. They are so popular that every week on our social media channels like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, Tuesday becomes ‘Coos-day’ and we post pictures like these. Thousands of people love them!
 Â
Scotland is a beautiful country and visitors come to experience our stunning scenery, our lochs, spectacular coastlines and beaches as well as our amazing castles, wildlife and so much more. To ensure it remains that way, it is so important for all of us to look after our special country and whenever we’re out for a walk, or maybe camping, or playing on the beach that we ‘leave only footprints and take away only memories’. So, it would be brilliant if your class could share that message with their friends and family.
I know there are still a few weeks of term left before the summer holidays, but when they do arrive, I hope you and your class can spend some time exploring our beautiful landscape.
Thank you again for sharing the work with me and you never know, one day, some of your class might be working for VisitScotland.
Kind regards
Ken Massie

P5 STEM Topic
In P5 we were investigating forces. Here are some pictures to demonstrate our learning.
P2/1
We have been learning about The Senses. We researched the 5 different senses, sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. In groups, we talked about, then drew and labelled our favourite thing to smell, taste, touch, hear and see. We discussed how our senses can keep us safe and help us make sense of the world around us.
We wanted to find out how easy it would be to complete tasks if we weren’t able to use all our senses.
We had some class volunteers take part in a blindfold challenge where they had to move around the room only listening to the instructions from the teacher. It helped us to understand how people who do not have sight have to rely on their sense of hearing and touch to help them move around their environment safely.
Our blindfolded volunteers enjoyed the taste test, where sweet and savoury items were given to taste and they had to identify the item. Some items were tricky but everyone managed to identify the chocolate!
Primary 1 STEM
Primary 1 have begun learning all about living things and life cycles as part of their STEM topic.
We have been learning about the different parts of a flower and the things that help plants to grow. We successfully grew cress in the classroom, ensuring that it had plenty of sunlight from the window and was watered every day.
We have also been learning all about the life cycle of a chicken. As part of our learning, we sequenced the stages in the life cycle, wrote facts about how the chicks hatch, created our own chick pictures, and designed a brooder box for growing chicks to live in. We are looking forward to learning about other life cycles when we return to school.
P5 Life in The 16th Century
Since our return from lockdown we took the opportunity to complete a poster to demonstrate our learning about life in the 16th century. This also gave us the opportunity to further develop our interpersonal skills to work together to achieve a common goal.
LI: Create a poster
SC: I can… have a bold title
I can… have interesting facts
I can…. have eye catching pictures.
We also had health and well being targets when we were working within our groups. The children were able to come up with the success criteria.
LI: To work together
SC: I can… listen to others
I can….. allow everyone to share their ideas
I am sure you will agree their posters are fantastic and they have been able to demonstrate their learning really well.
More to come in term 4 …………………… an update with our STEM topic
P6 STEM – Substance Misuse
In term 3, P6 have been exploring the affect of drugs, alcohol and medicine on our bodies. We have considered what group different substances belong to (illegal, legal or prescribe) as well as the impact they have on our bodies (stimulant or depressant).
The class have worked hard to investigate the issues with smoking, and the long term impact this can have on our body and organs. They made posters and PowerPoints to discourage people from smoking, using catchy slogans like “Don’t Smoke – It’s a Joke” and eye catching illustrations such as blackened lungs to make the reader think.
This week, we have looked at the different parts of the brain and the impact that alcohol has on each of these. We watched a very education video that helped us understand the short and long term impacts of alcoholism. Please find the video below if you fancy learning something new today!
P4/3 STEM Term 3 Topic
Good afternoon,
In P4/3 this term we have been learning about ‘forces’ as part of our STEM topic. In the topic the children have been investigating forces on toys and predicting the effect of a force on the motion of objects. They have also explored the force exerted on magnets and magnetic materials to contribute to the design of a game.
We worked in pairs to design a ramp that would make a ball roll the furthest. The children experimented with different angles, objects, and surfaces to design their ramp and then they had a competition to see which ball would go furthest. I have included pictures below.
The class designed a game using magnets and magnetic objects. The game had to be based on one (or more) of the 4 forces listed below:
Forces –
- Pushing
- Pulling
- Twisting
- Lifting
The children designed and played some really creative games. I have included some pictures of the games that the children created.
- Jenga
- Maze game
- Marble race
- Wrestling game
- Collecting game
- Music game
- Crane game
- Obstacle course
- Magnetic hide and seek
