Pumpherston and Uphall Station CPS Blog
A place for news, information and sharing learning from PUSCPS
Primary 1 have begun learning all about living things and life cycles as part of their STEM topic.
We have been learning about the different parts of a flower and the things that help plants to grow. We successfully grew cress in the classroom, ensuring that it had plenty of sunlight from the window and was watered every day.
We have also been learning all about the life cycle of a chicken. As part of our learning, we sequenced the stages in the life cycle, wrote facts about how the chicks hatch, created our own chick pictures, and designed a brooder box for growing chicks to live in. We are looking forward to learning about other life cycles when we return to school.
Since our return from lockdown we took the opportunity to complete a poster to demonstrate our learning about life in the 16th century. This also gave us the opportunity to further develop our interpersonal skills to work together to achieve a common goal.
LI: Create a poster
SC: I can… have a bold title
I can… have interesting facts
I can…. have eye catching pictures.
We also had health and well being targets when we were working within our groups. The children were able to come up with the success criteria.
LI: To work together
SC: I can… listen to others
I can….. allow everyone to share their ideas
I am sure you will agree their posters are fantastic and they have been able to demonstrate their learning really well.
More to come in term 4 …………………… an update with our STEM topic
In term 3, P6 have been exploring the affect of drugs, alcohol and medicine on our bodies. We have considered what group different substances belong to (illegal, legal or prescribe) as well as the impact they have on our bodies (stimulant or depressant).
The class have worked hard to investigate the issues with smoking, and the long term impact this can have on our body and organs. They made posters and PowerPoints to discourage people from smoking, using catchy slogans like “Don’t Smoke – It’s a Joke” and eye catching illustrations such as blackened lungs to make the reader think.
This week, we have looked at the different parts of the brain and the impact that alcohol has on each of these. We watched a very education video that helped us understand the short and long term impacts of alcoholism. Please find the video below if you fancy learning something new today!
Good afternoon,
In P4/3 this term we have been learning about ‘forces’ as part of our STEM topic. In the topic the children have been investigating forces on toys and predicting the effect of a force on the motion of objects. They have also explored the force exerted on magnets and magnetic materials to contribute to the design of a game.
We worked in pairs to design a ramp that would make a ball roll the furthest. The children experimented with different angles, objects, and surfaces to design their ramp and then they had a competition to see which ball would go furthest. I have included pictures below.
The class designed a game using magnets and magnetic objects. The game had to be based on one (or more) of the 4 forces listed below:

The children designed and played some really creative games. I have included some pictures of the games that the children created.
I hope you have all had a lovely weekend. Here is your timetable for online learning for this week. Please do what you can.
