Primary 2/3 Learning

This week has been a very strange week weather wise – snow in April!

The highlights of our learning this week are:

Our class sweet shop is set up ready to use with all the sweets we made last term and we can’t wait to use it – Mischa

We have begun learning about our senses and we went outside, between snow showers, to listen to the sounds in different parts of the school playground.  We talked about why different sounds were heard in different areas – Darcy

We started our new topic by working in groups to discuss what the school may need for the children from the new houses – Daniel

In Maths we have been revising the name of 3D shapes and describing their properties – Abbie, as well as greater than and less than a given number – Calum

We are looking forward to Monday and Tuesday off so lets hope for some good weather.

Have a great weekend

P6 Fun With Sarah-Jane

P6 have had great fun getting outdoors with Sarah-Jane today.

We started making preparations for our class pond by placing water troughs around the school. After that, we got paper cups and filled them with compost. Then we planted dry sweetcorn seeds inside the cups. We even made some little greenhouses to keep our seeds warm using plastic containers. Here we are at work…

P3 News

We have been developing our skills in collage. We started by using wool and tissue paper to create a thistle. Then we created a picture about the peach from James and the Giant Peach choosing a from a variety of different types of paper. To finish our geography topic we created a picture of a beach scene. For this picture we picked from a selection of different types of material. We have put up some of these fabulous beach collages for you to see.001 002 003 004 005 006 007

Primary 4

Our topic for the first few weeks back has been about food and nutrition. We revisited our knowledge of food groups and began to look at seven different nutrients (carbohydrates, fats, protein, minerals, vitamins, water and fibre). We explored what each set of nutrients did and thought about different age groups that they would be suitable for.

We knew that people’s dietary needs could be based on any allergies/intolerances they might have, their religious beliefs or preferences. Miss McLaughlin gave us a challenge on Friday – to design a meal which would be suitable for a vegetarian. We had to think carefully about what they would/wouldn’t eat (however, we couldn’t make a decision about fish) while also considering the types of nutrients they would need. The winning meal will be decided by Miss McLaughlin and we will make it next week to round off our topic. Below, are the three finalists!

Miss McLaughlin was extremely proud of everyone’s work – this is not an easy thing to think about! Be sure to pop in for a ‘taste test’ on Tuesday.

Until then…

Primary 1 and 1/2

What an exciting week we’ve had! Our chicken eggs arrived in an incubator on Monday and now we have fluffy and lively chicks getting used to their new home in the brooder box. Everyone has been captivated by the hatching of the chicks and it has been a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn more about how living things develop and change.

The children are now looking forward to caring for their new chicks next week and watching how they grow and progress. Take a look at our photo diary below.

These are some Easter cards we received from the children in Malta who we have a link with Pumpherston.  At Christmas we sent them some Christmas cards  and we were lucky enough to receive these Easter cards from them.

Scottish Education Awards 2016

Some lovely news to share with you all after our first week back!

As a school, we submitted a nomination to the Scottish Education Awards for the ‘Parents as Partners in Learning’ category. The work carried out by Sarah-Jane Haston across the school is making such an impact, so we felt that this should be recognised on a much larger scale. Many thanks to Tom Ullathorne and Mr Eagleson who helped with the application process.

Judges are coming to the school tomorrow to talk to staff and pupils about the wonderful work undertaken here. Very few schools made the shortlist and we are so proud that Pumpherston and Uphall Station Community Primary School has been recognised. The winner won’t be announced until nearer the summer, so let’s keep our fingers crossed until then!

I will be sure to keep you all updated!

Miss McLaughlin 🙂
