Primary 7 IDL

We are currently learning about a variety of different aspects of China to create a travel guide.  Each group decided what they wanted to investigate and are using their research skills to find relevant information before then using their IT skills to create a page or two for the travel guide book.  We can’t wait to see it published.

P7 Camp

A tip for parents of P7 pupils going to camp next week.  I learned this tip from another parent and I think it is helpful for helping to organise your child’s suitcase.

If you put each day’s set of clothes into one labelled plastic carrier bag, one for Thursday, one for Friday and one labelled for the disco, it helps them to stay organised and to wear suitable clothes for the outdoor activities.  In the past we have had pupils wearing clothes meant for the disco during the day, leaving them old outdoor clothes for the disco. This can be really upsetting for some pupils.

Please make sure they have suitable gloves, plenty of spare socks and their towel.

I’m really looking forward to going. We will have a great time – lets hope for some dry weather.

From Mrs Andison

Primary 7 Scottish focus

In Primary 7 our first IDL topic this term was Scottish Musicians, past and present.

We have learned about the career, family and music of a variety of Scottish musicians that pupils listen to currently and some from the not too distant past.

Some of the musicians we learned about are Lewis Capaldi, Calvin Harris, Gerry Cinnamon, Runrig, The Incredible String Band, Gerry Rafferty and Annie Lennox.  We have researched, produced posters and written non-chronological reports on a chosen musician.

We also listened to the different genres of music and discussed how they affected our emotions, mood and if they created mental images in our minds.  We had some very good discussions as well as enjoying some music from artists we hadn’t heard before.

Literacy study P7

This term, as our literacy study novel, we have been reading Anne Frank’s diary.  We are really enjoying the novel and Anne’s humour despite the difficulties she and her family are having.  We are looking at it from the point of discrimination and all that that entails.  We have looked more deeply into different types of discrimination and its impact on lives.  We are working with partners to create a power point presentation showing our understanding of this topic. Mrs Andison is looking forward to seeing and hearing our presentations this week.

Anderson shelter update from P7

Today we had a very special delivery to the school from Burton Roofing Manufacturers.  Primary 7 wrote letters to Burton Roofing to ask if they could help us for our project – to build our own Anderson shelter as part of our WW2 topic.  They were kind enough to offer their support and have very generously supplied us with sheets of corrugated metal and all the fixings.  We have spent a number of weeks digging out the base, with the help of Sarah-Jane, for the shelter and we are at the point of almost being ready to build it.  Primary 7 and Mrs Andison owe Burton Roofing a huge thank you for the materials.  It is great to know we are supported by local businesses.

We will keep you posted on our progress.

Primary 7 letter writing

LI – to learn how to write a formal letter.

SC – I can use correct layout, sign off, formal language and punctuation.

This week we have been learning how to write formal letters as we were writing to a local business to ask for their help with materials for a class project.  We all managed to write a good letter and made Mrs Andison very proud.  Come along to our Families Learning Together event and see for yourselves.

P7 Class Charter

In Primary 7 we decided on the signs of the  zodiac as our theme for our class charter. We then worked on the 3 agreed words Ready, Respectful and Safe to identify what they meant for us in class and in the playground.  Once we had agreed on our main points under these headings, we then linked these to the UN rights for the child.  All the pupils and adults have agreed to the charter.  We will try our best to stick to our class charter.

Primary 7 China topic

LI – We are learning to compare life in another country with our own.

SC – I can identify a number of similarities and differences from a typical school day, between China and Scotland.

This week we watched a BBC video on a typical school day in China.  We took notes about their school day then used these to discuss how their school day was different from ours.  We then went on to identify similarities and differences between our school day and one in China.

Similarities

In China and Scotland both schools did Literacy and Mathematics in the mornings.  All pupils have to do Moral education which is similar to our RME.  In both countries Art and PE is taught.  In China they had very similar trays for lunch as we do.

Differences

In China they start their morning at 8.00 am with the national anthem and some marching. At break they had no free play but did exercises.  At lunch they listened to a story or completed homework.  They had around 50 pupils in each class.

Primary 7 Learning

In Maths we have been learning to use our tables to help solve a variety of different problems.  During Maths week we started problem solving using different strategies and we are continuing some problem solving every week.  We are currently using fractions in problems.  We found the fraction problems a challenge so we are practising simplifying fractions and equivalent fractions.

In Writing we have been learning how to write a diary entry and have linked this to our topic about WW2.  We are writing a diary entry for a child who was evacuated during the war.  We looked at common features of diary entries and used these as our success criteria.  Hopefully you will enjoy reading them at parents night.
