Primary 1 Internet Safety

We are learning … about what the internet is and how we can stay safe while using it.

P1 talked about what we knew about the internet, how it worked and what it looked like. We found it very hard to describe it and lots of us thought it was a bit like electricity. We watched a video about it and were able to explain that:

  • it can be made of wires or wireless using satellites.
  • It can send messages across the world.
  • Phones, cars, computers, televisions all use it.

We heard a story about some children playing a computer game against each other when some things popped up on screen. We suggested that the children should ask a grown up if they weren’t sure. This is called asking permission and is a very important way to stay safe online.

Mrs McJimpsey was very impressed to hear lots of stories about times that P1 have asked for permission when using the internet.

Primary 1

Just a little reminder about P1 baby photographs for the March assembly. It would be lovely if you could either send in or email a picture of your child as a baby for a learning activity leading up to the assembly.  Pictures will be returned safely. It would be greatly appreciated if we could have these by Thursday 14th February.

P2C Number Talks

This week P2C trialled a new app called Kahoot!  We have been learning different strategies to subtract  this term and are gaining confidence each week.  We worked with a partner to talk about the problem and come up with a strategy. We then used the app to answer the questions in a whole class challenge. The game gave us ‘team talk’ time before we could answer.  We  shared our strategies with the class and could see when we were successful or talk about our mistakes.   We then created our own subtraction quiz  and will challenge other teams next week!

A wee taste of Scottish food and Dancing!

P2S had invited P1 to their class earlier this week to try some traditional Scottish foods and listen to some music.  Some children decided to have a wee dance and try on some tartan.  Mince and tatties went down very well along with some cheese and oatcakes.  The children were able to talk about some food hygiene rules, practised spreading and helped to prepare the food.

Happy Burns Day!

P1 Toy Workshop

P1 were set a challenge last term at the end of their toy topic.   The classroom needed toys for its toy workshop.  Children had to design and make a toy from the past.  They had to choose their materials carefully and talk about what their toy can do and how it is made.

Book Week Scotland – Primary 1

P1 have really enjoyed exploring the three books from their P1 Book Bags over the last few weeks.

We have focused on the different emotions the characters have shown in the book.  In ‘Eric makes a Splash’, the character is a real worrier and we explored his face expressions and how his voice might sound.  We used an app called Chatterkid on the Ipads to show this.

Primary 1 – Maths

In maths, P1 are learning to copy, continue and create  patterns.

Each group used different materials to make their pattern.

They were very good at working as a small team to make different patterns. There was lots of discussion about how to make them.

Next time they will be trying to work out other groups patterns and continue them.
