Learning about Harvest

Primary 1 have been learning about autumn time and harvest.  Today we were talking and learning about Harvest in particular.  We watched a power point and discussed how vegetables and fruit are harvested – from under the ground, above the ground and from trees/plants. Afterwards we unwrapped a range of vegetables and had the opportunity to use our senses to investigate.  Tomorrow we will be able to look even closer at our vegetables using magnifying glasses and peeling the layers off  to explore inside.

Primary 1 – A new and exciting beginning!

Primary 1 had a great first day today.  They all settled well and were ready to begin their school  journey.  The children made lots of choices during our ‘Play and Learn’ times.  We read a story together and talked about the meanings of words and travelling safely.  The buddies were fantastic!  They came to the class to help the children get ready for both break time and lunch time and at the end of the school day.  At lunchtime the children  sat in the lunch hall and shared time with their buddy, returning to the playground for a run around and a time to explore.

After lunch the children returned to the classroom and we  investigated mark making using chalk boards, we developed our  scissor skills and  created a  ‘This is me on my first day at school’ line drawing .  At the end of the day we were joined by our buddies again who walked with us on our first Primary 1  Daily Mile around the school.  Well done!

Nursery Developing the Young Workforce Week

This week the nursery children have been learning about the world of work.  We have had visits from a firefighter, a postman and a care worker.  We looked closely at some of the equipment Mr Fish uses to help him with his job.  Mr Wilson let us try on his outfit and we learned that he can choose to wear three different types of hats – a summer hat, winter and a skip hat.   We talked about the role of a care worker with Kaz.

In nursery we set up our own Post Office with letters,  post cards, stamps and labels.  We can also weigh parcels to see how heavy they are.  Our nursery fire station is set up with a telephone and emergency forms to fill in to tell the firefighters where to locate the fire or emergency.  We also have home made hoses to put out fires.

Thank you to all our visitors who helped develop and support our learning this week!

Nursery learning to keep safe!

Over the last few weeks the nursery children have been learning about keeping themselves safe.  We initially began to talk about keeping ourselves safe at home, using talking boxes and photographs.  Over the last couple of weeks we have moved on to keeping ourselves safe outside.  We have used the ‘Let’s go safe with Ziggy!’ resource, a set of stories and videos which help us to learn about keeping safe in the car, and crossing the road.
