Primary 1 Blog

Primary 1 have been learning about halves. We made cakes for one another with playdoh then cut them in half. We coloured halves of different shapes and found halves of numbers using our counters. We talked about when in real life we might need to use halves.

On World Book Day, we enjoyed reading Gorilla Loves Vanilla. We talked about words that rhyme in the book and completed a rhyme challenge with our friends in P2/1.  We talked about our favourite ice cream and designed our own delicious ice cream sundae.

This week  Primary 1 have been investigating finding pairs of numbers that when added together make ten.  We used counters and numicon to help us and enjoyed playing smartboard games and number bond bingo to practise what we have learned.

As part of our school Resilience programme, we talked about people who are special to us and drew pictures of who lives behind our front door,

Primary 1 began the week learning about Chinese New Year and how it is celebrated. We learned that in the run up to New Year, people decorate their houses and that as part of the celebrations, children are given red envelopes with money inside.  We made our own lanterns and red envelopes.

We also took part in the Scots assembly where we sang two Scottish songs – Mairi’s Wedding and Rammie in the Chip Shop. Our two Scots poem winners also performed “Mince and Tatties” in front of the school and P4 parents/carers.

Continuing our topic, P1 also designed a kilt for Katie Morag and enjoyed learning some Scottish dancing in the hall.

As part of our Scots focus, Primary 1 will be reading Katie Morag stories by the Scottish author, Mairi Hedderwick. This week we have enjoyed reading Katie Morag and the Tiresome Ted.

In the story, Katie Morag throws her teddy bear into the stormy sea. We painted stormy seas using cold colours and made our own teddy bears. We also completed a challenge where we put the events of the story in the correct order and wrote our own descriptions of Katie Morag.

Primary 1

A big well done to Primary 1 who gave a fantastic performance in this year’s nativity, Magical Christmas Journey. The boys and girls have worked hard the last few weeks, learning the songs  and practising their lines.  Everyone looked wonderful in their costumes yesterday and Mrs Strachan was very proud of you all!😊

Here are what a few of the children said about being in the nativity.

Cooper: I liked getting to speak on the microphone.

Bessie :  I was sparkly and I liked it

Murray: The song about baby Jesus sleeping was my favourite.

Harvey:  I liked being a King and saying “Greetings” and “We come from the East”.

Jaxson: Follow the star was my favourite song.

Primary 1 have been very busy this week making reindeer food to sell at the Christmas Fayre next Friday.  Our reindeer food is sparkly and should be sprinkled on your lawn on Christmas Eve to guide Santa’s reindeer to your home.

Primary 1 have been learning about Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies. We learned that people wear poppies to show that they are thinking about the soldiers that have fought in the wars. We made our own poppies to remember the soldiers.
