Primary 2

This week with Mrs McConville the class explored colour, pattern and shape through looking at rainforest animals linked to our Climate change topic. They looked closely at the different details on each animal and tried to replicate their pattern as closely as possible.

We have also been busy completing lots of christmas activities, including our, christmas tree decorations and some christmas addition tasks in maths.

On Thursday afternoon we watched our first pantomime (Cinderella), and made magic wands to use during the show.

Primary 2 have been working hard with Mrs McConville learning about shapes. This week they have been successful learners by looking at 3 different pieces of artwork by Wassily Kandinsky, who is thought to be the  first abstract artist using only colours and shapes in his work.  They looked at his painting ‘squares with concencentric circles’ and used this as inspiration for their own artwork. They created christmas trees with concentric baubles and they look fantastic.

In numeracy we have been practising our addition and have been using our rekenreks to help us count. We have worked together as a whole class using a digital rekenrek, and have also worked in pairs to use them at our tables to help us complete our maths workbooks.

This week we have been successful learners when looking at estimating and subitising in numeracy. We have been challenging ourselves to estimate quantities and have had a go at daily esti-mysteries where we have to use the clues to help us make a more accurate estimate.

We have also been working in small groups where one person put out a handful of counters and everyone then had to estimate how many counters were laid out. We then worked together to check our estimates by counting, thinking about how to arrange the counters (in rows of 5 or 10) to then get the total amount by skip counting.

To test our knowledge of climate zones and animal habitats we all worked together to sort animals into their climate zone based on what their habitats are like. We noticed how most of our polar zone animals were white and discussed why we thought they all had this in common.

This week in Primary 2 we have been learning about our topic of Climate Change. We have been responsible citizens by thinking of all the things we can do to help save our planet. Last week we completed our climate display wall with our “save our animals, save our planet posters”.  This week we worked together to think about all of the small steps we can take to try and help achieve this. Here are some examples of our work:

Primary 2

As part of Book Week Scotland Primary 2 received their Read, Write, Count bags. As a class we read the book the Biggest story and used this as inspiration to try and write our own imaginative stories. We were confident individuals when  playing the game act it out where one person would act out an animal, object or sport and the rest of the class had to try and guess what it was.

To celebrate children in need today we took part in the live Joe Wicks work it out quiz and workout where we had to work out the answers to 20 general knowledge questions and act out the answers. We managed to get all of the questions right but we were very tired by the end of it!!

This week in Primary 2 we have been looking at our persuasive writing. We watched a reading of the book ‘Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus’ and then identified all of the ways the pigeon tried to persuade us to let him drive the bus. We then worked together to come up with a list of reasons for why we thought he shouldn’t drive the bus. #effectivecontributors

After we had our list of reasons for both sides, we had a go at being persuasive ourselves, by writing a letter to the bus driver. Our letters had to either persuade him to let the pigeon drive the bus or persuade him not to let the pigeon drive the bus. We used out knowledge of the four sections of persuasive writing (Title, Statement of Position, Series of Arguments and Concluding statement) to help us structure our letter. Here are some examples :

This week in Primary 2 we have been listening out for our word boost words in our story Goat Donkey and the Noise Downstairs. We have added them to our word wall alongside the words we have learned from our first two stories (Who’s at the door & The Storm).

In numeracy we have been learning about place value. We are practising using concrete materials as well as digital resources to help us work out our hundreds, tens and units.
