Primary 2

Primary 2 have been learning about texture!

We explored natural materials and thought about good ‘texture words’ to describe them. Here are some of the words we came up with:

Then, we gathered extra materials to build a ‘texture board’.  We chose materials and wrote labels to describe how they felt. We hope to move the board to the playground where everyone can use it!

Miss McLaughlin taught us a key word for people who like feeling different textures. Test us to see if we can remember!

Until next time…

This week, Primary 2 found a new classmate!

When we came back from lunch, we found a set of tiny footprints on the floor! We followed them and found a little hedgehog! He had a story book with him and as we read, we found out that Harry (as we named him) needed to find somewhere to hibernate for the winter!

So, we wrapped up warm and ventured off into the nearby woodlands to see if there were any suitable places for Harry to hibernate. We came across different plants like an alder tree and ferns. We were lucky enough to hear bird songs and we even saw a family of deer!

We explored different woodland areas and discussed why they would/would not be suitable for Harry’s hibernation home. We also identified what makes up the woodland itself.

We also made maps to record our woodland journey. We are looking forward to seeing what Harry’s next task is!

Until next time…

P2-4 Golden Time

On Friday, Miss McLaughlin and Mrs Ross took their group for some outdoor fun!

We gathered different natural items (leaves, stones, shells) and turned them into a masterpiece by the library! Can you guess who we made…?

Club Wild – Autumn Update

At Club wild we have been making the most of the treasures that autumn brings.

The beginning of September brought a bounty of hedgerow fruits. We made jam with the last of the wild raspberries and the first of the brambles along with plums and apples of the orchard and trees in the school grounds. Look out for our tasty jam on sale at the Christmas fayre.

The magnificent purple of the brambles that stained our fingers as we picked also gave us dye to have a go at natural tie-dyeing. We got dark greens from nettles and yellows from turmeric to dye our t-shirts and bags. What amazing colours and patterns.

September also brings seeds shaking, popping and floating. We have collected and dried wild flower seeds that can be sown next year.

October brings beautiful colours as the leaves change colour and fall to the ground. We learnt about this autumn leaf fall, called senescence. Leaves that we collected and pressed were arranged in a frame and hung in the dinner hall. When they catch the autumn sunshine the amazing range of colours shine through.

For Spooky Halloween, Mr Bones was created from collected twigs, as we learned about the different bones in our bodies.

Join us soon for more autumn adventures soon.

Last week, Primary 2 had a set of special challenges!

We received another letter from Mary Anning, asking us to rebuild a stegosaurus skeleton! We used salt dough bones we had made and the bones we were sent weeks ago to try to make a stegosaurus shape. Little did we know that finishing the skeleton meant a session of TIME TRAVEL! We travelled back to prehistoric times, where we received another letter and an egg-shaped parcel… from Stig the Stegosaurus!

Poor Stig had lost his mummy and needed us to build somewhere safe for his egg. We worked in groups to make nests and had to make sure they fit our steps to success.
They were:
*soft, warm and comfortable
*strong
*made from outside materials

Have a look at how we did below! Which nest is your favourite?

Check in with us to see what our next challenge is!

This week, Primary 2 had a little taste of Italy!

Miss Pintus (Anastasia’s mum) came into our class on Thursday afternoon to teach us to make pasta from scratch!

We needed semolina, water and just a pinch of salt. We made these ingredients into a dough and were shown how to turn this into pasta shapes. We were even allowed to try using proper Italian tools!

We cooked our pasta for just ten minutes and then it was time for the all important tasting! Since there was no pasta left at the end, we award it a massive thumbs up! Miss McLaughin and Layla had a shot at making gluten-free pasta too.

A big thank you to Miss Pintus for coming in to teach us – we had a great time and learned lots!

Check in with us next week to see what we are learning!

Primary 2 have had a very exciting (and confusing) few weeks!

While we were ‘Daily Mile-ing’ one afternoon, a mysterious package was left on Miss McLaughlin’s chair. Inside, were some bones and a set of footprints!

We made guesses about where we thought the bones came from – alligators, lions, dinosaurs… But we still had no idea who sent them!

A few days later we received a letter. The bones (from a dinosaur!) were from a famous paleontologist called Mary Anning! We learned about her exciting life and with the help of Sarah-Jane, more about what a paleontologist does.

Mary Anning wanted US to become paleontologists too! So, we drew ourselves in full dig-worthy gear and sent the pictures back to her. Little did we know about the surprise that was waiting for us on Wednesday!

We now have our own ‘Dino Den’, where we can dig for bones, use the microscope and learn more about different types of dinosaurs! We also spent this week drawing detailed pictures of the bones and using our maths skills to measure/weigh them and find their area.

Check in with us to see what Mary’s next challenge is!

This week, Primary 2 were celebrating Scotland’s magical Maths Week!

We used the ‘YouCubed’ website to look at some of the videos that made us think differently about number and maths work. We learned that speed isn’t everything – just because you take your time, it doesn’t mean that you can’t do it.

We also gave some of their maths week activities a go!

Game of Totals
Count on Me
Building Shapes

We also received a rather unusual delivery this week… Check in with us to see what it was.

Until next time…

This week, Primary 2 turned chefs with their findings in the garden!

On Monday, we ventured again into the (rainy) garden and went potato picking. We found lots of potatoes, even some purple ones! We thought about how we wanted to use them and decided to make potato soup.

After a lot of washing, peeling, chopping, cooking and blending (by the adults), we had one delicious-looking soup! Which, of course, left only one important job – the tasting! The photos below show our tasting session – can you tell by our faces what we thought?

Check in with us next week to see what we have been learning!

Until then…
