Primary 4 Digital Learning Week

We are learning to use Writer’s Craft.

I can continue the story using similar vocaublary and grammar.

I can end the story in a choice.

For Digital Learning Week in Primary 4 we worked together to create a “Choose Your Own Adventure” story with lots of other classes in West Lothian.

We were sent the beginning of a story written by 2 other classes and we had to continue the story up until the next choice.

We began by reading the story together and discussing the tense and some of the different features of the story. This would help us to write more continuing on later.

We then worked in groups to brainstorm some idea which we could use for our story. Groups worked really hard together and were so imaginative!

We then came back together and shared our ideas with each other, choosing little bits from everyone’s ideas to create the next part of our story. We had to end it in a choice however, as it was to be passed to two other classes the next day and finished by them.

We are still waiting to recieve the finsihed stories all put together in one PowerPoint so we can read our own story and even choose our own path through the story.

We can’t wait!

Primary 4 Assembly!

See you all tomorrow,

Contractions in P4

We are learning to understand and use apostrophes for contractions.

I can use apostrophe when writing contracted words.

Primary Four have been busy this week looking at apostrophes for contractions. We had different stations set up to practise this and all found it really engaging and fun. Firstly, we were asked for help by Shrek! He had written a letter to Puss in Boots and Donkey and wondered if we would read it for him to check for any mistakes. We were all up to the task!

So Station 1 was working in pairs to check Shrek’s letter. We spotted apostrophes used incorrectly for contractions and lots of other silly mistakes too like capital letters and spellings!

Station 2 was where we had to work as a group to complete a contractions loop cards game. We had lots of cards with which we shared evenly and had to match with its other half. The aim is to create one large circle together (a bit like dominoes). All our groups managed to complete it and noticed that a couple of the cards were in there to trick them!

Our final Station was number 3 and this was contraction surgery! We had lots of expanded phrases like ‘cannot’ and ‘you have’ and we had to cut them up correctly and insert a plaster apostrophe in the correct place. This was very messy but we were all able to justify why we had placed our plaster apostrophe in the place we did and why it was correct.

We now have a much more solid understanding of the use of contractions and were able to come back together as a class and share our learning. We have fixed Shrek’s letter now so hopefully he will get a response back from Donkey and Puss soon!

Emotion Works in Primary 4

We are learning to: use emotional language.

I can: identify the emotions, behaviours and triggers of a character.

Primary 4 were tasked with identifying the emotions, behaviours and triggers of a character in groups of 3. We watched a short video entitled “A Shadow of Blue”, pausing it at 3 different points for discussion.

The character in the vieo clip experienced a range of emotions and we were able to identify and name lots of them. Finding behaviours was trickier, as the clip was mostly featuring the character’s shadow, but we worked hard in our groups to find lots!

We came back together as a class at the end and shared some of our answers for each section. We were able to justify our thoughts about the character’s emotions through discussing their behaviours and the triggers which made them feel this way.

We produced some brilliant work and had a great discussing which was very interesting.

Primary 4 Assembly

We have been learning lots about our local area during the last term at school and we want to share our learning with you!

On the 11th of May 2018, Primary 4 will be performing their assembly for the school and family and friends of the pupils are invited!

We have been working hard over the last week to bring together all of our learning and we will be getting our lines to learn soon. We can’t wait to see you all there!

Here are some pictures of us working hard:

Sumdog Competition Results!

The Sumdog competition results are in…

Primary 4 came 46th out of 267 classes! 🎉

Well done to all of Primary 4 for participating and answering lots of questions to get us into the top 50 schools!

Special congratulations to two of our pupils who made it into the top 50 pupils who got the most correct answers out of 1000 questions this week: Rosa came 10th and Calum came 41st out of 3379 pupils! 🎉

Ava B and Ellie Cl also answered all 1000 questions this week but unfortunately did not make it into the top 50. Well done you two! 🎉

Fantastic work from everyone this week and I am so proud!

Primary 4 Sumdog Competition!

I have been keeping an eye on our Sumdog scores for the competition and I would like to say a big well done to those of us in P4 who have joined in! 7 people from our class have entered which means we only need another 3 people to play to qualify and get on the leaderboard!

Extra special mention to Ava B who has currently answered the most questions in P4 in the last 7 days. Well done Ava!

So come on Primary 4, we can do it  if we work together!

Tom Gates Book Masterclass

For our book masterclass pupils from P4-7joined together to look at Liz Pichon’s book “Tom Gates – Genius Ideas (Mostly)”.

We read an extract of the book together and discussed the style in which Liz writes her books. She uses lots of pictures (or doodles as Tom calls them) and changes her writing to show what the word means. These types of words are called calligrams.

We then set to work creating calligrams our own words. We were very quiet and concentrating extremely hard when we were completing this!

At the end we shared our calligrams with each other and gave each other feedback on what we had created. Have a look!
