French Immersion Course 2018

At the beginning of the Summer holidays, Mrs Dickie, Mrs Montgomery and I attended a French immersion course in the south of France for a week.

The aims of this course were:

  • To improve methodological expertise in the teaching of French to young learners
  • To provide participants with materials and ideas suitable for the teaching of French at primary level
  • To develop cultural awareness and understanding of contemporary France
  • To improve participants’ competence and performance in French
  • To use Internet and other ICT resources in your class

We participated in many different activities and games, all of which can be adapted and used in all stages of primary school. We made board games, new family members for fictional families, found new number learning methods and  learned classic French playground games and songs.

We were taken on many cultural tours (for example, the local market) which allowed us to practise our French in real-life contexts and collect any French leaflets and magazines which could be used in the classroom.

At the end of the week, we had to create and present a talk in French to sum up what we had learnt and what we enjoyed about the week we had.

Once we had presented, we were awarded our certificates to say we had completed the week and our training.

It was an incredible week and we would highly recommend it to any other teachers who would like to rush up on their French or find some new activities for in class.

We met so many lovely teachers from all over Scotland and Ireland! We are keeping in contact with each other and plan to meet up again soon.

A huge thank you to Sophie and Angelique who made our week so incredible.

It’s the End of Primary Four!

We have made it to the end of Primary 4!

I have absolutely loved working withmy class and to celebrate this, we all had a mini party today.

Thank you all for an amazing year. I will miss you all so much but I know you will do fantastic work during the rest of your time at PUSCPS and beyond! I will treasure all the memories, gifts and fun times we had together. I promise I will come back and visit!

Enjoy your holidays and come back in August ready to learn with your brilliant new teacher!

From Miss Mulhern

Primary 4 at the Summer Disco!

We had such a great night last night at the disco and I cannot believe how amazing our class is at dancing! Thank you so much to the PSFA for organising it and making it such a great night.

Believe me, we were tired by the end!

Primary 4 Health Week – Day 5!

So we have reached the end of Health Week 2018. Our class have done so well this whole week and I am so pleased at how much they participated in and tried new things.

Today we had our Health Week assembly where each class had to go up and tell the school about someting they had done during Health Week this year. We decided to talk about our fruit smoothies and how we prepared them.

We also got to join in with a Jump Start Johnny dance fitness video at assemly which is something that P5 had been doing this week.

Our healthy snack people for today:

Well done to you guys!

To finish off our healthy week, we went out for our Daily Mile and Daily Skip.

I hope everyone had a good week and thaat we are all feeling a little bit more healthy!

Primary 4 Health Week – Day 4!

Another fantastic day for Primary 4 this Health Week. I am betting that lots of us will sleep well tonight!

Today we began with some Kuk Sool Won which is a type of martial arts! We learned lots of different poses and how they fit together in a sequence. The most important part of Kuk Sool Won is focus and concentration to allow the student to become the best they can be. He also taught us about getting back up again if we fall and about resilience.

Then he showed us how they never hurt anyone and that everyone trusts each other which means they can train safely. He even used some of us to demonstrate!

Today for our healthy snack photo we had 10 children! Well done guys!

After break we tried some relaxation time with music, which was inspired by P6, and we got to bring in blankets and cushions so we could switch off and clear our minds. Some of us chose to just lie down, while others opted to sit quietly and draw.

We then participated in some Judo in the hall! We got to wear judo jackets and worked with partners to learn some judo techniques.

He also demonstrated with us!

(Remember that judo is not to be trained outside of a dojo or without a coach)

Of course, to end the day we had our 2018 Sports Day!

It was a beautiful day and each group tried their hardest on every station. We all did so well at our P4 races, even though we were very tired and warm by then!

We had the sack race first;

and then we had the flat running race;

Well done to everyone who took part and I’m sure we all did a brilliant job! We will find out the scores and winners tommorrow at assembly.

Please remember that tomorrow we are back to our normal school uniform!

Primary 4 Health Week – Day 3!

We are on day 3 of Health Week now and my goodness our class have been busy again today!

To start us off today we looked at mental health and chose some mindfulness colouring sheets to colour in. We put instrumental music on and and chose to work in a place comfortable for us before we sat quietly and coloured. This helped us to calm down and to clear our minds.

10 people had healthy snacks today! Can we make it to 11 or maybe even higher tomorrow?

After break we had so much fun making our own smoothies! We had to make sure everything had been washed (including our hands!) and that the surfaces were clean before we could begin. We were working in pairs or threes and we had to pick 2 or 3 different fruits to put in our smoothie. We could choose from pineapple, mango, banana, pear or apple.

Then we were able to work together to cut the fruit, measure the orange juice and pop in some natural yoghurt! All of this was added together in the blender.

We then blended the fruit together with the help of an adult and watched as it changed colour!

All of our smoothies were slightly different and tasted different too! We each got to have at least 1/2 a cup of smoothie, although some people chose to half less if they didn’t enjoy theirs. Thankfully we mostly had some very happy faces!

After lunch we did some GoNoodle dances and yoga together and we were all very tired after that!

We had a break and then went for Daily Mile which we were running in the sun today!

Remember, it is Sports Day tomorrow so make sure you have your water bottles and are ready to go!

We also have a couple of visitors coming to see us and show us some new activities so be prepared for another update tomorrow!

Primary 4 Health Week – Day 2!

We have been very busy once again for Day 2 of Health Week!

We began our morning by discussing our Emotion Works cogs and identifying which cog the words or phrases on the board came under; emotions, behaviours, body sensations, triggers or regulation strategies. This made way for a lot of discussion and we all had to justify our answers and agree as a class. We decided that some of them even came under 2 different categories depending on the feelings that you had towards them.

We then finished our PE from yesterday out in the sunshine. It was very hard work once we got to the final station!

We are trying to have healthy snacks this week so we are taking a daily picture of our healthy eaters! We had 5 yesterday and today we had 9! Well done guys!

After break we had a brilliant surprise in the hall, where we were looking at our bodies with the Glasgow Science Centre. There were lots of different stations teaching us so many different things from our organs, heat in our bodies and our memory:

to the effects that smoking and drinking have on our faces and our lungs!

It was a brilliant, active and interesting workshop which we all loved!

Then after lunch we had a visit from Active Schools and we did lots of athletics outside. We tried lots of different activities and were definitely tired out when we got back in the classroom!

I cannot wait to see what we get up to tomorrow for Day 3!

Primary 4 Health Week – Day 1

Today was the first day of Health Week at PUSCPS and to begin our week strong, we did lots of active activities!

We started off with some spelling activities outdoors to get lots of fresh air. We did a Pass and Spell game,

,

hangman on whiteboards in pairs,

and writing and drawing our words in chalk!

Some of us had brought in very healthy snacks today and we are hoping for more people to join in on our healthy snack photo tomorrow!

We all then had a go at curling in the lunch hall. It was quite tricky to throw the curl with the right amount of force so we all had lots of practise throws and then we had a mini competition between our 3 teams for Dojo Points!

Then to finish the day, we participated in the Daily Mile or the Daily Skip,

and then did a bit of PE outside where we are improving our fitness!

I am sure we will have another fun-filled day tomorrow!

Primary 4 Class Trip

We are learning to describe how weather affects humans.

I can experiment in making miniature weather.

I can explain what make the weather.

Primary 4 had an amazing time last week at Dynamic Earth for our class trip. We had a tour which began back in time and then went through lots of different climates, linking to our topic this term.

After lunch we got to participate in a Wonderful Weather workshop and create miniature hurricanes and lightening!

We then got to view a 360 degree film about space and how the Earth was formed. This film also showed us lots of the different jobs that people can have to do with space and science. Our children were able to link this back to our Developing the Young Workforce Week at school which was brilliant!

Our day was so much fun and we learned a lot from it but it definitely tired us out on the bus on the way home!

Primary 4 DYW Week

During Developing the Young Workforce week Primary 4 had some wonderful visitors in to tell us about their jobs.

We loved hearing from Mrs Gent the midwife about babies and how to care for them.

Some of our class were very knowledgable about this subject and gave us demonstrations of how to hold and burp babies!

We really enjoyed hearing from Mr Walker about his job building and customising motorcycles. We even got to design our own motorbikes!

Sarah-Jane came to speak to us about her archaeology job too and we were amazed at the types of things she got to do for work! We had a mini dig ourselves and found lots of different things, from pottery to bones!

This week has been really eye-opening and our class had such a great time! We even heard about different scientist jobs during our class trip to Dynamic Earth yesterday which  was linked back to our DYW Week by one of our pupils.

Thank you so much to all our visitors. We loved it all!
