The sponsors of our Community Orchard have asked us to postpone the planting day once more. We are sorry to disappoint you with this news, and hope to bring news of a definite date very soon. Everyone is hoping this change of date will increase our chances of warmer (and drier?) weather…
The Pod
Our school is a member of The Pod website which has lots of eco ideas and games to play. You can have a look at their latest e-zine at http://www.jointhepod.org/student-zone/
Orchard Day!
We have a new date for Orchard Day!
Make a note in your diaries – Wednesday 20th February – that’s when Fruitful schools are planning to bring their team with support from News International who sponsored the Orchard Offer.  Mrs Hull’s going to try and book some dry weather for that week…
Any parents or friends who would like to help would be very welcome. Contact the school office and we’ll get in touch with details.
Primary 4
We have been learning about the rules for Kosher food, the food that is allowed for Jewish people, in our RME lessons.
Can anyone find a ‘Kosher’ badge on a food packet, jar or can? Look in your cupboards – or have a good look around when you’re at the supermarket helping with the shopping! If you find one, tell us where!
For a reminder of the Kosher rules, try this website: http://www.chabad.org/kids/article_cdo/aid/926235/jewish/What-is-Kosher.htm
Primary 5
Primary 5 have been linking RME and Science this week as we learned about Evolution as an explanation of how life began on Earth. We watched an animation which showed some dinosaurs with feathers, and explained how there are some birds in the world today that can’t fly, but have other talents which make them the best birds for their habitat.
Thank you to Ellie for helping to sum up the learning this week.
We thought about the kiwi in particular – can anyone tell me where kiwis live? Can P5 remember what the kiwi is good at?
Sleigh bells ring…
We want to show off some of the super sleighs our children have designed and built for Santa this December! He will have a difficult job choosing between gold, glitter, rocket speed, reindeer power, and even time travel machines.
Planting a winter woodland
On Friday 14th December Primary 2 and 3 were well wrapped up in the cold and frost to work with our friends from the Oatridge campus of Scotland’s Rural College. They planted tree seedlings from the Woodland trust around the perimeter fence at the SUDS pond area of the school grounds. These little plants will grow in to rose, hawthorn, dogwood and holly hedges and encourage lots of different wildlife into the nature area at the pond. One special seedling was not planted – a Royal Oak, grown from seed collected from one of the royal household estates. This will be given a special position closer to the school, as part of the Jubilee Wood project.
Orchard planting postponed
The planting of our orchard has been postponed until the New Year, in the hope that we will have better weather.
We will still be planting the tree seedlings from the Woodland trust on Friday 14th as planned, with help from our friends at Oatridge. Thank you to all parents who offered help with the orchard – we will be in touch when the new date is announced.
Quick Choir on Tour
Here are the Quick Choirs who were singing this week at St John’s hospital and Dobbies Garden Centre, Livingston. We had a great time and we hope to hear soon how much was raised for the Friends of St John’s charity. Well done to all our singers, you were a credit to the school.
Thank you to Horsburgh Buses for the transport and to Santa for joining in at Dobbies!
