P4A Making Predictions

P4A Predictions

We have had a tremendous amount of fun this week, developing our reading skills by learning how to select clues from the text to help us make realistic predictions. We read chapter 7 in George’s Marvellous Medicine, selecting clues from the text to help us predict what might happen to Grandma. Then we wrote what our predictions were following on from when George gives Grandma her medicine. During our ‘Natters to Nannas and Papa’s’ event,  we asked what our own Grandparents/family members thought of our predictions and how accurate they thought they were.

LI: We are learning to use what we know about the text to make predictions.

SC: I know that my genre of text determines how realistic my predictions need to be.

I can select key themes, information and identify the author’s style to help e make suitable                             predictions.

Thank you to those who came to hear our predictions.

JRSO – 2016 Induction Event

This week our three Primary 7 Junior Road Safety Officers attended a West Lothian JRSO Induction Event at Broxburn Primary School.

During this event our JRSO’s developed their knowledge of Road Safety, received brilliant resources and were given training on how to present information to an audience. The JRSO’s really enjoyed their afternoon and are very excited to share what they have learned with the JRSO Junior Leadership Team and with the rest of the school.

Primary 2/3 and Primary 3 Have a ‘Gigantosaurus’ Reading Afternoon!

This week Primary 2/3 and Primary 3 listened to the author John Duddle read his book Gigantosaurus! Emma (P3) enjoyed listening to the author read his own book! Parents were invited to come and watch us do our reading activities.

Some groups had the opportunity to look at dinosaur books and use the internet to collect some interesting facts. Liam (P3) found a fun fact: Dinosaurs are now extinct! Oscar (P2/3) found an interesting fact: The crocodile and other lizards are related to the dinosaurs! Lewis C (P3) enjoyed reading about dinosaurs: A T-Rex’s brain is the size of a cucumber!

Another group had the opportunity to create their own dinosaur and label the parts of the body using adjectives. Eilidh (P3) enjoyed describing the dinosaurs using different adjectives. Cara (P2/3) enjoyed looking at the dinosaur pictures to give her ideas for interesting adjectives!

We also had to match rhyming words from the book and create dinosaur speech bubbles!

It’s all about the acting in P7/6!

‘Alice’ the musical is well under way and in preparation for this P7/6 have been looking at play scripts and how they differ from stories.

LI: We are learning to identify the differences between a play and a story.

SC: I can identify stage directions

I can identify dialogue.

I can confidently discuss the differences.

Pupils have been looking at a story and how this could be changed into a script. Children had to identify dialogue and stage directions then had the opportunity to write their own dialogue and stage directions and act this out in front of the class. I can safely say, we have a very talented bunch in P7/6.

All of the upper area are working very hard at the moment to perfect our performances  for the show in a few weeks time. We are very busy making props and scenery and everyone is involved. We look forward to sharing our talents with you soon.

Miss Anderson

Primary 7 are “acting” up a storm!

This term’s IDL focus, linking Literacy and Expressive Arts, is all about getting musical and creative with Alice in Wonderland.

In our Literacy lessons we have been learning about playscripts as a genre and how they differ from a traditional story text.

Learning Intention:

We are learning to identify the features of a playscript.

Success Criteria:

I can identify the purpose of a playscript text.

I can confidently discuss the differences between a fictional text and a script.

I can explain what stage directions, dialogue and actions are, relating them to how an actor would use them in real life.

We have begun working on Alice the Musical, our wonderful production, and are all busy learning lines, dance routines and movements and of course, tuning our voices to be able to sing the tracks.  We look forward to sharing our show with you and showing off all of the different talents we have in Mid Calder Primary!!
