Fantastic Fork and Field Trip

This week primary 7/6 went to the Fork and field. We were taken on a tour around the restaurant. We were showed how the drinks were made at the bar and the menu was an Ipad. We even got to taste a cocktail made of fruit. We were also shown the toilets. A local artist called Harry painted the beautiful designs on the walls. Angela, the Fork and Field owner was really helpful and answered all our questions.
We asked questions such as:

How do you attract customers? Answer: Social media, fliers.
In Fork and Field what is your business strategy? Answer: To advertise on social media.
Who helped you in the progress? Answer: A whole team of worker, designers, etc.

It was good trip and everyone had fun and enjoyed it.

P2 Mid Calder Museum

At the end of our IDL topic about Dinosaurs, Primary 2 invited P1 and P7 to their Museum.

First, we made posters to inform the classes that the museum was about to open, and we put them up all around the school.

Then, we discussed the things we particularly enjoyed about our own visit to the National Museum of Scotland, and we talked about the kind of things we thought would have made our visit even better.                                                         For instance, we really enjoyed handling the dinosaur bones and looking at the huge skeleton models, but we thought that a short film about dinosaurs would have been really interesting too.

Thinking about these points, each Dino Discovery Team planned their own display. They had lots of  amazing ideas! Soon, we had displays that included

  • digging for fossils in the sand
  • sorting dinosaur models into herbivores and carnivores
  • working as a team to build an enormous jigsaw and name the dinosaurs
  • using netbooks to create dinosaur pictures
  • a quiz
  • a short film clip about a stegosaurus

Primary 2 wanted their visitors to have lots of opportunities to pick things up and handle them, to play and to be creative as they learned about dinosaurs. They also created Fact Files about different dinosaurs, and carefully chose non-fiction books to display as well.

P4’s Amazing Dinosaur Assembly!

Primary 4 enjoyed presenting their Dinosaur Assembly today and had lots of fun sharing their learning from last term!

The boys and girls enjoyed:

  • Learning scripts and adding their own special touch to them!
  • Taking on different roles like dinosaurs and explorers.
  • Sharing facts with the audience.
  • Showing the audience how to sort dinosaurs into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores using a Venn diagram.
  • Talking about the different stages of the fossilization process.
  • Sharing their stories about ‘A dinosaur in my classroom!’.
  • Managing ICT equipment by becoming Technical Troopers.

Well done Primary 4 for bringing dinosaurs back to life!

PSA Halloween Disco

A big thank you to our PSA for organising such a fun and creative Halloween Party. Two of our house and vice captions attended a PSA to discuss what the pupils would like at the Disco and the PSA used this information to plan our exciting parties. Thank you to all the pupils, parents and staff who attended the discos.

P4’s Dinosaur Museum

This term Primary 4 have been working hard to bring the memory of dinosaurs back to life! We accepted a challenge from Mr T.Rex at the National Museum of Scotland, who asked us to set up our very own Mid Calder Museum. The children have enjoyed learning about dinosaurs and taking on different roles such as explorers, palaeontologists and museum curators.

Today P2, P3 and P4 opened the doors to their museum to boys and girls across the school. Our dinosaur exhibits included:

  • Powerpoints and videos
  • Fact files
  • Dinosaur stories
  • Sorting activities using Venn diagrams
  • Volcanoes
  • Dinosaur eggs
  • Fossil hunts and much much more!

Carla: At first, when you told us we were creating a museum I wasn’t that excited. But now I’m loving it!

Olivia: I was so nervous at the start but this is actually so fun!

Isla: I love doing this!

Have a look at our museum in action!

P5C Numeracy

L.I. We are learning to link multiplication and division

S.C. I can count on and back in 3s, 4s, 6s, 8s

I can divide whole numbers into equal groups

Primary 5C were keen to improve their knowledge of times tables so we have had a week of working specifically on this to try and increase speed and accuracy with multiplication and division facts.

We used our knowledge of place value and known facts to multiply  and divide numbers and engaged in a few practical games and activities to help us brush up our times tables facts!

We took advantage of a jotter-free day to learn some games which we think will be helpful – some of these could also be done easily at home:

  • Times table challenge wheel – we tested each other on how quickly and accurately we could write all the stations of the chosen times table
  • Multiplication / division bingo and dominoes
  • Times table snakes and ladders
  • King’s Game – taking turns to place cards at their correct station within the chosen times table

Now that we know these games we can hopefully keep using them to improve our times table accuracy and knowledge of division facts.
