School Closure

Good morning everyone,

I know you will have had a group call to say the school is closed tomorrow and that we will miss both the ‘P7 Assembly’ and the ‘Bingo Night’.

We will reschedule the P7 assembly for later in the session, I know they have put a lot of work into their presentations and it would be a shame if they did not get to showcase them. I am sure the PSA will be in touch to let everyone know the new arrangements for the bingo night.

The conditions are not ideal but it is lovely to look out and for children to venture out and have fun. I was out yesterday for a short while to clear garden paths and it was bitter cold, this morning you would not know where these paths are!

Boys and girls if you are outside keep wrapped up cosy and keep yourself safe. I look forward to seeing you all back with lots of stories on Monday.   Mrs McKenzie

Snow Snow Snow

Good morning everyone,

Here we are all stuck at home and wondering what we can do!

I do not imagine that is the situation at all and you are already very busy. However, boys and girls you could catch up on your spelling homework, read an extra few pages of your reading book or use your Sum-dog log in to complete some maths challenges OR you could get outside build an amazing snow structure, take a picture and e-mail the school with them. I am sure your teacher would love to see what you did on your day off. Ooh La La! French Culture Hits Mid Calder.

Come along to our Curriculum Evening on Tuesday to find out how we learn about France, French culture and French vocabulary. The upper school will be there to present their learning with videos, Powerpoints and posters.

Float Our Boats – Science Skills in P5A and P5C

We were learning about floating and sinking in P5A. First we investigated whAT THINGS FLOATED AND WHAT THINGS SUNK. We learnt about buoyancy, upthrust and gravity and how the density of the material affected the buoyancy. Afterwards we designed boats thinking about their size and shape. We ran a fair test as we each used the same size of tinfoil. We predicted how many pennies our boats would hold . Then we tested the boat design and recorded how many pennies it held before sinking.

I found out that sometimes it is the shape and size of the boat that effects the buoyancy. Our small boat held 21 pennies but we had predicted that it would hold 10 (Ruari). It was so much fun making and testing our boats (Kai).

P5: Term 3 Learning Letter

Learning Letter P5a P5c Term 3

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome to Term 3 in Primary 5. We hope you have all enjoyed a restful Christmas and New Year break and that the children are ready for the new challenges of the term ahead. Last week saw the beginning of our new IDL context ‘RMS TITANIC’. The children have already engaged really well with this fascinating topic and many of them have been keen to share facts or information they have found with the rest of the class. Throughout this context we will be focusing on life in the Edwardian era, in particular the class system and how this impacted on the disaster. We will also learn about the personal stories of the passengers on board the ship and will consider whether the disaster could have been prevented. Miss Anderson and Mrs Campbell

Magical Mysteries in Art in P5C and P5A

Master Printmaker Nick Devison ran a workshop for the P5s on Burns Day and what a magical event it was. We had worked on Pressprinting and how to make a clean, clear print and Nick showed us how to develop our skills and play with the materials showing developing skill using line, shape and texture (EXA 2.03a). P5C extended this with the addition of watercolour to their favourite artwork on the 26th.
We used a specialist safe etching ink and experimented with cut-out shapes, making lines and creating textures with our hands, pens, cotton buds and cocktail sticks.
As you can see from the pictures we had abstract artworks which were quite mysterious as well more figurative works. P5C gave constructive comment on their own and others’work (EXA 2.07a)
Megan and Tiegan loved that they were not directed in their themes and could make as many works until the paper ran out! Megan even made a collaborative work with Annabel. Most of all the magic of turning over the monoprints to see what had been printed was the most magical thing of the morning.
It was great P5a got to find out more about the career of an artist and it was a lot of fun. Clearing up was not quite so much fun for the class teachers but nobody said learning had to be clean:-)
A HUGE thank you to Nick. It was a finale to our lessons on printmaking.

Term 2 Celebration Assembly

On December 22nd, we welcomed parents and friends along to our Celebration Assembly so that pupils could receive their STEM Super Star and Successful Speller awards. We also announced the Top Scorers for each house.

A big thank you to Mr Welsh for inspiring us by sharing his interpretation of our school motto, Believe, Achieve, Succeed, and for presenting our Primary 3 pupils with their certificate for coming first in West Lothian’s Sumdog Maths Contest. Certificates were also awarded to our pupils who came in the top 50 in the competition.

Well done to all of our award winners!

Open Afternoon in P5C

L.I. We are learning to design a shop to serve the local community

I can choose suitable materials for building my model

Primary 5C have been working hard on building their models of their chosen businesses.

After careful consideration, each group decided on a business which they thought would do well in the village of Mid Calder. The children had to make a basic business plan, giving details about the product or service their business provides and who their target market was likely to be.

After that, they began to design their premises with floor plans and a shop front design.

Finally, they began the fun  part – building models of each business.

After working on their models for a week or so, Primary 5 were very excited to share their designs with their parents, carers and family members during our Open Afternoon.

It was great to have so many adults in class to help and we were all very impressed at their fantastic creativity. Lots of parents enjoyed a Blue Peter moment, creating furniture , sweets and cakes, ball pits, climbing frames, bookshelves and more using just junk materials and lots of imagination!

The children loved having so much extra help and it was fantastic to hear them enthusiastically discussing their businesses and designs. A huge thanks to everyone who was able to attend, your contributions definitely made a big difference to the success of our models.
