P2/1 Scottish Book Week

Primary 2/1 had a great time during Scottish Book week. We explored Cops and Robbers by Janet and Allan Ahlberg in more detail, choosing one of our favourite events and recreating it in planned role play.

During our Reading Open Afternoon, we welcomed some of our families into our classroom. Primary 1 pupils received their Book Bug Bags, and Primary 2 pupils were delighted to also receive a Read Write Count bag each. To start, the P1 pupils enjoyed an author reading of Shark in the Park on a Windy Day, while the P2s watched an author reading of Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam. Thereafter we enjoyed a range of activities linked to the stories. For example, the P1s made their own telescopes (just like the main character, Timothy Pope in their story) and used them to find rhyming words around the classroom. Meanwhile the Primary 2s created their own criminal animals and choose appropriate adjectives to describe them. We also engaged in a range of reading activities which we enjoy on a daily basis within our reading lessons, such as common word games and comprehension activities.

PSA Christmas Fair 2016

A big thank you to everyone who showed up on Friday evening to support our school by attending our annual Christmas Fair. The PSA did a fantastic job of organising the event, and bringing the whole school community together for the festive season. It was lovely to see new members of the PSA, previous and current parents/carers, pupils past and present, members of the community and staff join together.

The fair raised the amazing total of £2,007.92! This will be added onto our Playground Fund, which brings it to the grand total of £8004.07. A big thank you to everyone who supported this event.

Mid Calder Reading Challenge

To celebrate Book Week Scotland,  MCPS were set a reading challenge- to take a photo of ourselves reading for pleasure in an unusual place. We were inundated with weird and wonderful pictures of some very unusual places, and it looks like everyone had lots of fun taking part in the challenge. A big well done to all those who tweeted us their photos, or brought them into school on paper or on their own device.

Even some of the staff got involved…

Primary 2/3 and Primary 3 Have a ‘Gigantosaurus’ Reading Afternoon!

This week Primary 2/3 and Primary 3 listened to the author John Duddle read his book Gigantosaurus! Emma (P3) enjoyed listening to the author read his own book! Parents were invited to come and watch us do our reading activities.

Some groups had the opportunity to look at dinosaur books and use the internet to collect some interesting facts. Liam (P3) found a fun fact: Dinosaurs are now extinct! Oscar (P2/3) found an interesting fact: The crocodile and other lizards are related to the dinosaurs! Lewis C (P3) enjoyed reading about dinosaurs: A T-Rex’s brain is the size of a cucumber!

Another group had the opportunity to create their own dinosaur and label the parts of the body using adjectives. Eilidh (P3) enjoyed describing the dinosaurs using different adjectives. Cara (P2/3) enjoyed looking at the dinosaur pictures to give her ideas for interesting adjectives!

We also had to match rhyming words from the book and create dinosaur speech bubbles!

Reading Open Afternoon

As part of Scottish Book Week Primary 1 to 7 invited their family and relatives to teach them all about reading. Parents got to experience what a reading lesson is like in their child’s class and the range of activities and resources available. They were also given tips on how to support their child at home.
