P2/1 Visit Stirling Castle
As part of learning about castles P2/1 visited Stirling Castle today. They had a puppet workshop, explored the castle and even got to try on some costumes. Thank you to the parent helpers who supported this excursion.
Profiling Tool
The documents below show what your child will be learning when they are working withing a specific level. This should help you support their learning at home. Our pupils use these profiling tool when they are setting individual and group targets.
P2/1 Internet Safety Day
As part of Internet Safety Day P2/1 explored 5 different questions:
- How do we get on to the internet?
- What can we do on the internet?
- What passwords do we use?
- Why is a password important?
- How can we keep our passwords safe?
We explored the questions in group, and then made a poster. we presented our ideas to the rest of our class.
Question Writing in P2/1
We are learning to write a letter asking questions about Stirling Castle.
- I can use a letter opening and ending.
- I can use an address.
- I can use questions with question marks.
- I can use different question openers.
This week in writing we were learning about questions. We thought ahead to our trip to Stirling Castle and created some questions we would like to ask. We had to use different question openers, for example, who, what, where, when, why and did. We had to remember to use a question mark at the end o our questions. We then wrote a letter to Stirling Castle asking them our questions. Primary 2 had to write an introduction telling them about ourselves. We finished it by self assessing our work against the success criteria.
Someone even received the Living Our Values Award for creating interesting questions.

Modern Art Gallery Trip January 2017
Primary 2/3 loved their trip to the galleries of modern art in Edinburgh on Monday. They were going to look at some of Joan Eardley’s paintings and drawings. They were asked lots of questions by Fraser, an artist guide. They had to respond with what they saw and felt about the art works. James thought that Fraser was really kind and he learnt that anyone can be an artist. James found out that artists have to do a sketch before they do a painting. Cara learnt that Joan had done a lots of seascapes and landscapes. Rhuairdh learnt that Joan also painted portraits of children from Glasgow and the streets.
Miss Brolls ran two painting workshops to teach the children how to paint in layers, using ‘dirty’ colours. The children had to mix their colours on a palette using yellow ochre, cobalt blue, white and black. They made washes of colour with lots of water. They saw statues and artists’ models and Lucas loved Vulcan the large iron giant sculpture.
James learnt that dark colours such as grey and black shading a colour makes it ‘dirty’. He also used dry brush strokes to create more texture with his layers.
Now P2/3 have added dried grasses from Catterline, where Joan worked to add a final layer. Their mini-masterpieces are displayed in the art room in school.

Mid Calder celebrates Robert Burns in style!
On Friday 20th January, pupils from across each class demonstrated their Scots skills by participating in our annual Robert Burns assembly.
Two pupils from each class recited their poem in front of the audience, led by our House Captains. Â We learned a little information about Rabbie Burns himself and we were treated to a real celebration of Scots culture, when girls from P6 and P7 performed some Highland dancing.
Niamh Sher, Cailin McKenna and Zach Paris will now go forward to represent Mid Calder Primary at the West Lothian Burns Recital competition later on this term.
ALL boys and girls who took part were a real credit to themselves – their use of Scots language was outstanding and dedication to learning their poems off by heart was fantastic.
Thankyou to our judging panel, Mr MacFarlane, Mrs Bokhari and Mrs Mackenzie had a tough job choosing a representative from Primary Five to Seven.
Building Snow Castles in P2/1
Einartas had a great idea to go outside and build snow castles as part of our Castles interdisciplinary learning. Some of decided to work on our own, in pairs, in small groups and in larger groups. We had to use items that we found to create a castle. Some us added a flag created a moat and made turrets as we had been learning about the features of a castle in class. As a group we explained to the rest of the class the features of our castle and how we made it.
We are learning to write a description of our ice castle.
- I can describe what the castle looked like using wow words.
- I can use sentences to describe the castle.
- I can use capital letters and full stops.
When we went back in our class we talked to our learning partner about what our castle looked like. Then we wrote a description of our castle. We realised that we were so excited we forgot to add in wow words so during our buddy time, our buddy’s helped us to uplevel our writing  by using wow words.
