International Women in Engineering Day Competition

International Women in Engineering Day is taking place on June 23rd this year. To celebrate, Network Rail have launched a new competition which aims to recognise the wonderful contributions of female engineers.

“We would love for your child to research a female engineer who they think has had a huge impact on the world and tell us what the world would be like if that engineering solution did not exist.”

Their entry should take the form of a poster or story. Please complete the application form and send your child’s poster or story to earlyengagement@networkrail.co.uk. All children should have a named parent or carer as a point of contact who can provide consent to take part.

We’re looking for creativity, originality and safety considerations. Prizes are available for two winners from each of the three age categories.

The prizes are:

All winners will have their wonderful pieces of work showcased in some of our stations for passengers to admire.

  • All winners will have the opportunity to be inspired with a video conference delivered by Network Rail’s female role models.
  • Winners from the 5 to 8 category will have a chance to become a cartoon character in our Emily the Engineer Activity Book
  • Winners in the categories 9 to 11 and 12 to 14 will win a Golden Ticket Experience Day at Network Rail

Miniature Books

Wednesday 10th June 202o

Back in April I shared a video on how to make your own miniature book.  Here is Axel Scheffler (illustrator of The Gruffalo) talking about a miniature book that he made.  Why not try making your own.  It could be based around your favourite character or you could make up your own adventure story.

For more information about miniature books and instructions as to how to make your own click here.

STEM-a-Story (P1-4)

Good morning boys and girls!

This week’s STEM Challenge has a Literacy link and to two of my favourite books, ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson and ‘Ada Twist, Scientist’ by Andrea Beaty.

Don’t worry if you don’t have access to the story, you can find ‘The Gruffalo’ online here and ‘Ada Twist, Scientist’, here.

Read or listen to the story of your choosing and complete some of the tasks from the STEM-a-Story grid. Remember to let me know how you get on.

More STEM-a-Story resources can be found on the Glasgow STEM website.
DYW link = Developing the Young Workforce. More information on this can be found here.

P2 Glasgow Science Centre Virtual Visit

Hello everyone. How are you all doing? I am so missing you as I know Mrs Duff is. This Thursday should have been our visit to the Glasgow Science Centre. I know you were all looking forward to this. Mrs Duff and I were so looking forward to taking you too. I thought I would give you the link to some of the Videos the Glasgow Science Centre have been posting for children and families to watch and even to do things themselves. I am putting on the link as there are so many of them which I know you will enjoy. Only do the experiments and activities after speaking to mum, dad or whoever is looking after you as some of them are a bit tricky. Let me know which you have enjoyed.
