St Andrews Day Celebration

The boys and girls all helped to celebrate St Andrews day on Monday the 30th of November. We were very busy in the art area learning about St Andrew, (a fisherman who was friends with Jesus) and creating our own Scottish flags to take home.  Some children chose to paint their flags and others chose to make their own using glue and cutting white strips. We enjoyed, dancing to Scottish music and dressing up in tartan skirts and hats.  We ate a yummy Scottish snack of Scottish oatcakes and Scottish shortbread with our fruit.  We plan to revisit this topic and learn more about Scotland after the Christmas holidays (Christmas has taken over in nursery!).

Children In Need 2015

This year the children took charge of their own fundraising ideas for Children in Need and voted for a Pyjama day at nursery. We also made Pudsey bear eye masks, Pudsey cookies and sold Pudsey wrist bands. We raised a total of £149.75 for the charity. Thank you to all our children and families for supporting Children in Need.

Farmer Visit

The morning children were very excited to have a farmer visit nursery as part of our continued learning in Harvest time and the journey produce makes from ‘farm to fork’.  We all gathered around the farm yard area over the morning session to meet the Farmer (Finaly’s Dad) and had lots of questions ready to ask him to further develop our learning.  The children  learned about what animals he had on his farm and were amazed that there were 180 cows “now that’s a lot of milk!”  Please look on our planning wall in nursery at our ‘Harvest Learning Story’ to find out more.

Harvest Learning Story

Harvest art work inspired by orchard produce.

We have been very busy using the produce from our orchard to create seasonal artwork this week. On Monday we  explored the different colours and textures of the plants and fruit and vegetables in our garden to decide what we could use for art and craft materials.  We liked the feel of the sticks and the bright colours and smell of the petals.   When we were digging up the potatoes to be used for potato wedges at snack and harvesting the apples to bake in pies and crumbles, we decided bring some of fruit and veg to our art areas to try printing with them, painting with them and using them as colage materials..   Please have a look at our finished pieces of work at the front entrance.

Look at our beautiful poppies.

In November we scattered Poppy seeds given to us by Poppy Scotland at the top of our hill as part of our learning about Remembrance Sunday.  We are thrilled to see how big and beautiful they have grown and how much colour it has added to our garden.

For more information about the work that goes on at Poppy Scotland please look on the Education page on their web site.  You might even just spot a few familiar faces!

Goodbye Butterflies

Do you remember the little caterpillars we had in nursery?  Well can you guess what they grew into?  We watched them eat and grow plump, then sleep in their chrysalis’ just like in the ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Crale.  Then one morning when we came into nursery we discovered they had grown into beautiful ‘Painted Lady’ butterflies and hatched out of their chrysalis’.  We fed them fruit and sugary water for a few days to give them the strength to fly away. It was lovely watching them fly out of the net and off into the nursery garden.  If you would like to find out more about caterpillars and butterflies please have a look in the morning red group floor book.

We are still patiently waiting to spot some frogs in our pond.  So far we have observed lots of tadpoles swimming around, especially when it is sunny when they swim to the surface of the pond.  The wraparound children will keep an eye on them over the summer holidays and let us know of any changes.

The Royal Highland Show 2015

On Thursday the wraparound children had a fantastic time at the Royal Highland Show.  They enjoyed getting up close with the animals and trying new experiences such a milking a cow, making a candle, tasting fresh honey and yummy treats and milk.  Everyone was very tired when they got back to nursery after having such a busy day and walking so far.  Thank you to our parent/grandparent helpers for making this trip possible.

On Friday in nursery, we tuned into Glow TV to discover even more about the animals on show at Ingliston.

Have a look at our photographs to find out more……
