P2B

Another busy week of learning in P2B. The class are enjoying our Castles topic and learning a lot. I hope the castle building is coming along nicely.

I was especially impressed this week during our writing / problem solving lesson where student’s had to write the ending to “Hassle at the Castle” a story in which the drawbridge of a castle was damaged in a storm. Children were to think of how to get the King and Queen safely across the moat. Some great ideas were shared and I was proud of the work written.

This week’s Big Star was Murray. Great job Murray, keep working hard.

Lois – Painting castles

Ethan – Art and science

In P5 we are really enjoying learning about the Victorians. We are busy at home preparing presentations about an interesting Victorian invention, and in class we researched facts about Victorian inventors and created fact files. In numeracy we are working hard on our mental maths skill, especially adding and subtracting money. We also talked about being safe online for Safer Internet Day. The term is really getting busy now…….

On Monday and Tuesday we had a brilliant start to our fantastic class talks about Vikings. We have heard five already and they have been full of great facts. They all had a wow factor! We can’t wait to hear the rest.

This week we have been learning about symmetry. We did a carousel of activities where we coloured in different coloured squares that had to be mirror images of each other. We also played a symmetry game on the smartboard and we looked at the alphabet to see if we could find symmetrical letters. We especially enjoyed creating symmetrical pictures out of wooden shapes with a partner. We had to put a ruler between us, create a pattern and copy the pattern that our partner had made, making it perfectly symmetrical on either side of the ruler.

In our writing we made adverts for selling a longship. We learnt about the features of persuasive writing and then had to include these in our adverts. We used alliteration, adjectives, details of our ship (often exaggerated!) and many of the eye catching features seen in adverts to try and make them stand out. Mrs Graham and Mrs Collings were super impressed with them! Did you want to buy a longship for 50 silver arm rings cause if you do, we know where to find them!

In P.E. we are coming to the end of our circuits fitness block. We are steadily improving our scores and are hoping to smash them in our final week next Thursday!
We have started thinking about our show and our assembly. It’s going to be a busy second half of the term for P4a (and P4b) with rehearsals and performances to look forward to.

In numeracy we are learning to multiply in 10s and 100s. We are working really hard using a variety of strategies to support our learning.

How we used a mindmap………

This week we used mindmaps to learn and write about Viking longhouses. First we thought about the key features of our own homes and then compared these to Viking houses. We drew mindmaps to show how they were built and what was inside them. We then drew pictures of Viking longhouses and wrote notes from our mindmaps which helped us with our non-fiction writing. Mindmaps are a great way of starting a new topic!

In Maths with Miss Graham, we learnt about how angles are formed when two lines meet or cross. We learnt that the square angle on a piece of paper is called a right angle and we made right angle eaters who found right angles around the classroom. We then played ‘Simon Says’ with our arms making right angles, acute angles and obtuse angles. Acute angles are smaller than a right angle and obtuse angles are bigger than a right angle but smaller than a straight line.

In French we continued learning about school supplies. We listened to a rap with someone putting things into their ‘sac à dos’. We had to tick things off our bingo sheet when the rapper named them in the rap. It was tricky!

In NYCoS we learnt a new game where we had to bounce a giant tennis ball the number of times corresponding to the month of the year so one bounce is January, 2 is February etc. We enjoyed it and were all quite good at it. We are enjoying all the games and rhythm activities which we are doing and it doesn’t feel like learning!
In Numeracy we are continuing to learn about multiplication using arrays, skip counting, pictures and sometimes the knowledge from our own heads.
