The results for the poetry competition are:

Ross McPhee and Katie MacMillan were commended and overall winner for P4a was Ava Brown. Well done!

Another Busy Week in P5ms!

This week we began learning about the lives of Victorian children. We discovered that the lives of rich children were very different from that of poor children. Did you know that it wasn’t just boys who were chimney sweeps?  Girls climbed up too!

Miss Clark taught us about an exciting type of music from the Caribbean. We tried out a number of percussion instruments. We can’t wait until next week when we will perform a song accompanied by our very own Caribbean music.

Congratulations to all the girls who reached the final of the Burns Competition, particularly our overall winner, Amy Coakley.

Who’s raving about reading this week?

This week Antonia explored our school blog. She shared what she had read with us. What a lot of exciting things go on at Balbardie!

Thanks, Antonia.

News in P3b…

We have been very busy with our times tables by looking for patterns and making links. We have been focusing on the 5 and 10 times table. We have been making games to help remember them!

Our writing was ‘Life as a Scottish Child’ and our targets were:

to write about life in Scotland and what we did that was traditional

punctuate accurately

make use of openers

Our Scots learning has included tartan and we discovered many tartans on a Clan map. Kilts now have buckles but when people use to wear them they wrapped them around themselves and secured them with a badge. We also painted our own tartan.

We have enjoyed our learning this week!

Ancient Egypt

P3lm started their Ancient Egyptian learning theme this week. We have discussed what we already know and what we would like to learn about. We wrote a set of instructions on how to build a pyramid, which was good fun (Meg). We have also been learning about the importance of the River Nile. Here are some facts about the River Nile:
“it is the longest river in Africa and the world” (Callum D).
“people travelled by boat along the River Nile” (Aaron).
“Every year the River Nile floods between June and September” (Iona).
“Some Egyptians washed in the Nile” (David).
“Only the rich had wells for fresh water, others drank from the Nile” (Meadow).
“The ancient Egyptians lived and farmed along the Nile, using the soil to produce food for themselves and their animals” (Mrs Laidlaw).

We are looking forward to learning so much more!

P3lm times table fun!

P3lm have been learning their times tables using lots of different methods. Our favourite has been the 2 times table rap. We have learned our multiplication facts using this rap and have enjoyed singing, dancing and rapping along to the music. We are going to be using different types of music to help us learn each times table and look forward to sharing each song with our friends and family.

A week in 6h.

In maths we have moved onto percentages. It’s harder than ever but I’m making links with my fraction learning (MH).

Everyone in Primary 6 has been split into groups for the musical. We need to use our collaborative skills to achieve our goals. We have responsibility for all the different parts that go into putting on a show, like staging and costumes.

Loch a’ fowk in skale we learnt a poem in scots. Uir class choose Jake, Ella, Natalie an’ Megan P tae represent us. We pure enjoyed watchin’ Jake’s as he included actions. We hink ‘Missus Nae Offence’ was th’ funniest. They thooght it was scary (NR) an’ interestin’ (MP) tae perf’rm fur th’ judges.

We had fun in the snow this week. Mr Welsh challenged us to a snowman building competition, it was cold and fun (MP)…who won Mr Welsh?

This week we also found out about our choices for the Sports Electives. They look really fun and I think they will make a difference to my future (AJ). I am looking forward to learning new skills (MP). Today PC Arnott visited us. He spoke to us about alcohol and drugs. It was very informative (AJ).

Musical fun for Class 3

At topic time Class 3 have been discovering more about the Titanic. On Wednesday we found out what it would have been like to work in the engine room.  We had great fun dressing up as the stokers who shovelled coal into the furnaces to power the ship. Very hard and very hot work!

We hope to make a mini movie about the Titanic crew so you may see some of that in a few weeks time!

On Wednesday we also went to the music room and  experimented with lots of instruments.

Here are our views on our music session:

Geordie thought that playing the instruments was super cool. He liked everything.

Jason tried the piano, the keyboard and the guitar. He liked the piano best.

Nathan really liked playing the guitar and piano.

Josh thought the music time was good and is looking forward to performing his music to others.

Aidan has music on a Tuesday. He particularly enjoys using the xylophone and the metallophone. He is in the process of creating some pieces of music which will be recorded onto a CD. The rest of us in Class 3 are looking forward to hearing it 🙂

P4a

It has been an ext remely hard job choosing three people to go forward for the Poetry Competition. We have finally got our class winners. They are

Ava Brown

Katie MacMillan

Ross McPhee

Congratulations from P4a!

Good Luck!

P1b News

As part of our Katie Morag topic, we began to create our very own storm paintings.  We used our knowledge of cold colours to paint the sky and sea and now have to add lightening and sinking boats!  Isla liked this activity very much.

Rachael enjoyed number work this week where she was learning all about the story of 4!  Grace was able to give an example of a sum which gives the answer 4 by stating that 2+2=4!

P1b also learned that origami is the art of Pper folding.  The children listened well to instructions in order to create an origami dog.

Have a lovely weekend,

P1b

P2/1 travel to the Arctic!

This week P2/1 have been learning about the Arctic through the story, The Polar Bear Son. This story is a traditional Inuit tale. On Monday we made polar bears using ‘puffy paint’. We have displayed these above our class igloo which we are really enjoying playing in. We learned an Inuit song called ‘Oke, toke, unga’ which we performed with actions. We made our own Inuit and dressed him or her in warm clothing. Did you know that long ago Inuits wore the skins of seals and polar bears to keep warm, but nowadays they dress just like us on a winter’s day? Yesterday we watched a video about Inuits and we took our own notes. We will use our notes next week to make things during ‘free play.’
Miss Baillie and P2/1 x

P4a

This has been a busy week. P4a has been learning about Robert Burns and Scots language. We are in the process of writing our own poems using Scots words and have written biographies for Robert Burns.

In Maths we have been learning to fly! Well only for learning about ‘Grid References’!

We have also been learning how to be ‘cool’ with our responses to other people and in different situations.

This Week in Class 1

This week we have been learning about writing and posting letters.   On Monday we went to the post box to post our thank you letters to Santa!  We spotted some familiar words on the post box.  We learned that the days of the week are written on the post box to let people know when the postman will collect the letters.

We are really enjoying our class post office.   We have been very busy writing letters to our friends and teachers.   Writing letters is one of our favourite choose time activities this week!

We also had a birthday party this week.  We prepared a yummy healthy snack and wore colourful party hats!  We sang Happy Birthday, played party games and danced to our favourite songs.  The boys in class 1 have some super dance moves!  The birthday boy’s mum even gave everyone a party bag full of treats to take home!

During Circle Time we have been learning out feelings.  This week we discussed feeling happy.  We listened to a story and then took turns to tell our friends about the things that make us happy.

Cameron  “Playing at school, playing in the playground and playing at home makes me happy”.

Jayden “Playing with Mickey makes me happy”.

We created some happy faces using playdough!

Caribbean Music in P5a

This week we have been learning about Caribbean music. There are African and European influences in Caribbean music. The reason for this is that many people from Africa were brought to the Caribbean to be slaves on the sugar plantations. Don’t worry though – the UK abolished slavery in the Caribbean in 1833. We liked all the styles of Caribbean music. Here are a few of our own compositions.

Group 1

Group 2

Group 3

Group 4

Group 5

This term we are reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane as our class novel. Edward Tulane is a china rabbit. We think that he is a bit rude and selfish, but are hopeful that he will not always be this way.

We have also been reading with our buddies in P2lg.

P2pg News

This week in P2pg we have been making our targets for our writing.  We have decided that some of us need to focus on keeping our writing neat, some need to remember to be careful when forming our letters and some of us need to remember to focus a little more on our writing tasks.

In maths we have finished looking at symmetry by colouring beautiful butterflies and making our own symmetrical patterns.  These will be going on display outside our classroom soon.

In our topic we have been learning about our sense of hearing.  The children remembered some of the name for the different parts, especially the small bones (hammer, anvil and stirrup) and the Cochlea – which looks rather like a snail’s shell!  We also did an experiment where we had to listen to different sounds then figure out what they were!  This was quite tricky, but most of the children recognised the sounds of some animals, cars and even the fog horn!

We’ve also been learning a Scottish poem for Burns day and three children will be chosen and put through to the school final on Monday!  Good luck to all the children and keep practicing!  We also talked about Robert Burns and why he is important and remembered at this time of year.

Well done P2pg.

A Super Surprise for P5ms!

This week we received a wonderful surprise – five iPads were delivered to our class. We’ve already used them but look forward to using them more as we learn across the curriculum.

Another teacher joined our class this week. Miss Clark will be working with us until the end of March. We call our teachers the 3 Musketeers! Together we will make a great team.

We are proud of our 3 finalists for the Burns Competition: Lauren Kirk, Kendal Bryce and Amy Coakley.

It was lovely to have Mr Welsh and Miss Henderson visit our Reading Rave. We enjoyed it and hope they did too!

Who’s raving about reading this week?

This week Callum and Nathan shared their favourite articles from the newspaper with us. Thank you, boys!

From the Blog Post Box:

Something I’m looking forward to is…..

Teigan learned to dribble through cones in P.E.

With Mrs Mooney Anais learned some 3D shapes and she was able to draw and label a cuboid and sphere.

Sasha and Ray were able to describe what they learned in P.E with Mr Jefferies talking about having a bigger base for better balance.

Sophie had a great one this week with practise makes perfect!

It has been a great week in P4l, well done everyone.

This week in p2lg

This week we have been working hard on counting and ordering numbers to 100. Next week we are going to learn how to tell if a number is odd or even.

In reading we are learning about non-fiction texts. This week we learned about the contents page. We learned that the contents page helps us to find information on specific pages of the book.

In our learning about The Senses we learned about animals which have very good eyesight and animals which have very poor eyesight. We also did some blindfold touch exepriments where we had to put our hands into some different substances including ketchup, washing up liquid, feathers, flour and play doh. It was a bit messy but lots of fun!

Well done to Liam who was pupil of the week this week. Liam received 2 certificates, 1 from Mrs Gallagher and 1 from the Breakfast Club. 🙂

We are working hard on our assembly for next Friday and are looking forward to seeing some of our family and friends there next week.

Class 2 learn about the Egyptians

We learnt where Egypt is on the globe and also that it belongs to the continent called ‘Africa’.

We learnt about River Nile. We learnt that Nile is the longest river in the world and we tried to guess why Nile was important for Egyptians’s life.

We enjoyed making a pyramid and decorating it.

We found the process of making mummies so exciting! We tried and did it ourselves online!

We are also very happy that Callum will join our class from Monday! Welcome Callum!!!
