P4a

We are getting music lessons from NYCOS. We are really enjoying these as we are learning about rhythm and beat while having fun.

Our Topic of Mary Queen of Scots is now complete, (almost!), and we have really enjoyed it. We were really shocked to receive a letter from the Director of the Museum to ask where we were at a given time as the Tomb of Mary Queen of Scots had been damaged. We had an airtight alibi though and wrote back to the Director telling him where we were at that time.

In maths we have been learning about directions and how a compass can help us with directions. We impressed Mrs. Ghafoor with how quickly we understood turning in different degrees and clockwise and anticlockwise directions. (I will have a challenge next week for you P4a!)

Snow early on in the week meant that we had to go home, not that we complained! It did mean that we didn’t get to make our Palm Crosses.

Bye for now, P4a.

News from P2pg

This week we have been learning more about life in a castle.  We learned about the clothes they wore and found out that the wealthy Lords and Ladies were the ones that had all the fine silks and furs, whilst other people had to make do with what they had.  As for the children they just wore hand me downs from the adults!  We also learned how they cleaned their teach and kept clean in the medieval times and about how they didn’t have bathrooms or toilets!  The children were very unimpressed by these facts!  However, we  were impressed making our flags for the classroom and describing castles in our writing sessions.

We also had a look at the Easter story and learned all about this celebration and how it came about.  We were amazed by the way in which Jesus was treated and didn’t feel it was very ‘Cool in School’!

We are looking forward to our Shared start next week and seeing everyone at the Easter Service.

See you then.

P5ms Enter the Dragons’ Den

This week our Home Teams presented their pitches to the Dragons.

There were four great inventions:

The Do-It Bathroom – a luxury bathroom equipped with drinks machine, music at the click of your fingers and lots more!

The Comfy Collar – a clever collar designed to keep your pet warm in winter and cool in summer.

The Cutlery Plate – a plate with built in cutlery, including a pizza slicer.

The Egg Bed – a snug place for your eggs to rest safely.

In the end it was the Balbardie Stars who, having persuaded the Dragons to invest the most in their Comfy Collar, walked away with £800!

The Happy Hippos came up smiling too, with the Dragons from their team being commended for excellent business sense.

Who’s raving about reading this week?

This week Lauren C and Isla used our Reading Rave to read books about Flanimals.  They designed their own Flanimals which they will use to present a puppet show! It is great to see you using what you are reading to help you in other areas of the Curriculum. 🙂

Money! Money! Money!

The boys in class 1 have been working very hard at Maths time.  We have been learning all about money.  We can recognise all of the coins from 1p to £2!  Miss Barrie, Mr Marsden and Mrs Stewart are very proud.

We like to go shopping with Mr Marsden in the class 1 grocery shop.  We buy lots of different things like books, fruit and cereal.   We love our role play shop; we take turns of being the shop keeper and the customer.

Lewis likes to help his mum with the shopping.  Lewis asked his mum to buy cucumber when they were in Tesco recently, as Lewis enjoyed tasting cucumber at snack time.

Joe, Lewis and Jayden enjoy counting their pennies to make sure that they have enough to pay for each item on their shopping list.

Cody, Cameron and Liam have been investigating how different coins can be used to make the same amount.  Here we are, hard at work!

Next week we will go to the local shop to put our money skills to good use.  I wonder what we will buy!

Laptop Learning in P4l

Hello Everyone

This week we had a chance to work on the laptops.  We were looking at the life of John Logie Baird and researching a part of his life.  We worked with a partner to identify key information then shared it with the rest of the class.  We are all very pleased that this famous Scot helped to invent the television as it is hard to imagine what life would be like now without it.  We had our third session working with the National Youth Choir of Scotland.  Mrs Leamy is very impressed with how we are all picking up on the idea of bet and rhythm and it is good fun playing all the singing games.  On Friday we took part in the schools Earth Hour and to help us remember we painted giant flourescent pandas as it is the WWF that organise the Earth Hour event.

Bye for now.

Learning update from P1b

This week at school we looked at coins to £2.  We can recognise these coins and add 1p, 2p and 5p coins up to 10p.  We enjoyed playing using these coins to play shops!

Rachael enjoyed making a pirate ship from a selection of materials.  Our challenge was to include a sail, mast, flag, cannon and portholes.  Next week we are going to test to see if our ship floats in water.  Thank you for your kind donations of junk materials.

P5a get animated…

This week P5a have been learning how to create animations. We started off by participating in a Glow Meet with Bruce Husband (an OOGLIE animator). This was great fun and Miss Anderson downloaded an animation app for our iPads. Using our new app, and iMovie, we were able to create stop motion animations with music and sound effects. Click here and here for a few examples. We used this learning later in the week when we worked with P2lg pupils to create stories on the iPads.

It has also been profile week and we have all written a choose story for our profile jotters. We have all used possessive apostrophes in our writing this week.

Most of the class think that this week has flown by. Alex thinks this is because of all the snow.

We also had our last Club Golf session. We have really enjoyed Club Golf and we think that Mr Welsh has too…

Castle Adventures in p2lg

This week in writing we were writing our own Castle Adventure stories. The success criteria for our writing was to continue a story using the same characters and setting. Here are a couple of our stories:

Suddenly the magic key began to glow. The magic took the children to a castle. Biff was a knight. She kept bad people out of the castle. A dragon came to the castle. Biff was scared of the dragon. The queen was angry that the dragon came into the castle.

By Darja

Suddenly the magic key began to glow. The magic took the children to a castle. It took them to the king’s bedroom. The king sent them to the witches’ dungeon where they were making a potion to melt the bars on the window so they could escape. Biff and Chip sneaked out of the window and ran away. The king shouted for them to come back. The magic key began to glow and took them back home.

We are looking forward to sharing everything we have learned about castles with our parents next week at shared start.

P3 Ancient Egyptian Projects

P3 were given an Ancient Egyptian project task for homework, which has been a huge success.  On Thursday the boys and girls shared their personal projects with the class and all learned something new from them.

We were all blown away by the fantastic models and interesting information booklets; they were to such a high standard.

The children had a wonderful time sharing their learning and showing off their creativity!

I would like to say a massive well done to the children for all their hard work and effort with this task and also to parents and carers for their input.

Below are a few pictures of Rebecca, Aidan and Valerija presenting their projects to the class with pride.

Jolly Egyptians

Well, it’s been another busy week in Ancient Egypt for P3b!

We have written some wonderful stories about our lives as Egyptian gods and goddesses – we really put our imaginations to good use.

We learned more about mummification and designed our own canopic jars to store the liver, intestines, stomach and lungs. The designs were beautiful but you probably wouldn’t want to look inside!

We even practised our times tables by loading up a camel.

Our personal projects on Ancient Egypt have been handed in and we’re looking forward to sharing our learning with one another – it’s one of the best ways to learn!

Balbardie’s Got Stars in their Eyes**

Last week Miss Henderson launched our talent show for this session, Balbardie’s Got Stars in their Eyes.  She explained that Stars in their Eyes was a programme on the television before most of us were born.  She showed us a clip of Aston from JLS on it playing Michael Jackson.  He was very young!  We are now getting prepared to take part in class auditions next Monday afternoon when we will choose 3 acts to go through to Boot Camp.  The House Captains and Head Boy/Girl are going to be the judges at Boot Camp and at the final.  We are very excited about who we are going to impersonate and it doesn’t just have to be a signing act like the TV show.  Boot Camp will take place on Monday 15th April in the afternoon and the final on Wednesday 24th April at 9.30 for P3/4/6 and 11.00 for P1/2/5/7.  After the final we will vote for our favourite.  The winner will be announced at the final for parents at 7.00 on the same day.  We will let you know details for tickets nearer the time.

Primary 2/1

This week Mrs Jamieson found a clue and a map outside our classroom door.  We followed the map which led us to… another map!  There were 5 maps in total.

Lucy and Ben took turns at being the photographer. Good job guys!

The final map led us to a Primary 4l and Logan’s big brother helped us search the classroom.  Carter found a key which opened our box.  Inside the box were slates from Victorian times. We all had a go at writing letters on the slates which was very tricky!

My big brother helped me find the key. Thanks Carter!

Mrs Jamieson then remembered that there was an old hand bell in the school.  It was very loud!  Mrs White came along to class and told us stories about the bell.  Thank you Mrs White.

If you know an interesting fact about schools in the past please let us know…

P4a

What a jam packed week this has been!

On Tuesday we went to the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. We had two challenges to complete after our visit with Mary Queen of Scots. She was very impressed with how much we knew about her life!

On Thursday we walked to Bathgate academy to see the P6’s show called ‘Alice’. What a fantastic show. We walked back just in time for lunch and then had our own dress rehearsal for our asembly!

Today was our assembly and Mrs Ghafoor was very proud of us as we did a fantastic job! We had lots of fun and then also got a chance to see our parents afterwards. Our assembly was on Mary Queenof Scots.

Some of our comments about our assembly:

My favourite part was telling people what to do (as a queen)- Emma C

My favourite part was getting my head chopped off! – Ava

I was a prompter. My job was to tell people when to go on stage – Abby C

It is so, so fun with the class – Adam.

My favourite part was when my mummy came to watch me – Taylor

My favourite part was ‘Rizzio’ getting murdered because it looked real – Erin H

Good job P4a!

P1b’s Learning Log

A highlight from our week was watching the Primary 6’s performance of ‘Alice’.  We travelled by bus to Bathgate Academy on Thursday to watch the fabulous show!  Ava mentioned that she enjoyed listening to the boys and girls singing and dancing.

In number work this week, Sam enjoyed learning more about take away sums.  This week we have been focusing on the subtraction story of 5.  Rachael was then able to state that 5-0=5!

We have also been busy learning information about food allergies.  Leia explained that eating food you are allergic to can make people feel sick and itchy.  We learned that we can keep people with allergies safe by checking labels on food, washing our hands after eating, not sharing food and telling an adult if someone does not feel well.

The boys are girls also looked great dressed in their costumes to support Red Nose Day.   Thank you for your kind donations,

P1b

Victorian Comic Relief

We have begun presenting our Class Talks on Victorian Inventions. We are working hard to meet the four success criteria: be prepared, eye contact, involve your audience and speak clearly.

We enjoyed using Lauren’s Victorian camera for our Comic Relief photo shoot.

We are also creating our own inventions to pitch to the Dragons’ Den next week.

We hope to persuade them to invest £500 in our invention.

We have seen two fantastic performances this week. We loved the songs and dances performed during the P6 production of Alice. P4a impressed us with their assembly about Mary, Queen of Scots. We loved the beheading scene! Well done P4a and P6!

From the Blog Post Box:

Next week I will try hard……

… to maintain my Step 5 position.        William

…when I am working on subtraction with exchanging.        Ellie

…on my presentation.       Nathan

…on my spelling.     Finlay

Free Play in P1g

We love having free play throughout the week! It is so much fun! Lots of us work together to make and invent things. Here is a few things that we did this week during free play:

– I built a huge transformer out of sticklebricks (Charlie)

– I pretended to be an author and wrote my own book! (Ava C)

–  I loved the role play area and dressed up as Jack Sparrow the pirate (David)

– Using my own ideas, I built what I think the galaday float should look like using lego (Grace)

– I had fun using lego to build a fairytale castle (Erin)

Have a lovely weekend!

Measuring up in p2

On Wednesday we were using our feet, hands and cubes to measure objects and areas in our classroom. We also used our class height chart to find out who is the tallest in the class. Rory is the tallest boy, he is 130cm. Cole is very close behind at 129cm and Megan is the tallest girl at 128cm.

We have also been learning about how to become a knight. We learned that young boys would start their training at around age 7. It took 14 years of training to become a knight. We thought was a very long time to have to train. We enjoyed looking at the different kinds of weapons used in battles.

Pupil of the week this week was Michelle for always working hard and for her excellent behaviour . Well done Michelle!
