Outdoor Spelling

Now that the weather is turning a bit nicer we’ll be making the most of the great outdoors!

This morning, P3lm wrote farm related spelling words on the ground with chalk and drew pictures to illustrate each word.  It was lots of fun!

Electricity…

We have been learning about electricity.  So far we have investigated circuits.  A circuit is like a bike chain, the battery pushes electrons round the wires and components.   We experimented making our own circuits and the effect of adding more light bulbs in either series or parallel.  We learnt how to draw circuits.  We then tested different materials to see which were conductors, metal spoon or paper clip, and insulators, chalk or plastic.  We are going to use this knowledge to build a light house.

Belgium Blog – Wednesday

Hello everyone!

We’ve just arrived back at the hotel after spending the day in Holland. The weather has been fantastic once again today.

In the morning we journeyed to see a clogmaker named Boyd who gave us a demonstration of the different techniques that have been used over the years to make clogs and the different uses. We got a chance to have a look around his workshop and even the chance to buy some mini clogs which Boyd was kind enough to engrave for us. Here’s Boyd doing the demonstration…

This afternoon we went to De Haan and enjoyed a couple of hours in the water park. Everyone had a ball and took advantage of the flumes, jacuzzis, waves, rapids and outdoor pool. Here are some of us enjoying a relaxing jacuzzi…

It’s nearly time for dinner and then we’ll be heading back up to the beach for some more fun before rounding off the day with waffles or frites!

Belgium Blog – Tuesday

Greetings from a very sunny and warm Blankenberge.

Another jam-packed (or should I say chocolate-packed day!)

We begun the day with a continental breakfast and then headed off to the Chocolate Factory. We learned how chocolate was made and watched a demonstration by the chocolatier before getting to taste some freshly made samples. Then we headed over for a try of the chocolate fountain and then we went shopping in the gift shop. There was lots of chocolates bought so hopefully some make their way home to the rest of the family to enjoy! Check out our picture below…

The rest of the day we spent exploring the ancient city of Bruges. Highlights included the Beguinage monastery, the Belfry Tower, Market Square and Canal Boat Ride. Mr Welsh treated everyone to frites as a mid-afternoon snack and they were delicious. The sun has been shining all day so we spent some time in the park and then finished off tonight with an hour up at the beach.

Looking forward to tomorrow already and our trip to the clogmaker and the water park. 🙂

Belgium Blog – Monday

It’s been a very busy Monday here in Belgium. We arrived at Calais around 9am this morning and then we made a special stop off at Dunkirk to take in the scene of the famous rescue in June 1940. We learned about how the events of Dunkirk fitted in with the rest of World War 2 during our studies earlier this year so it was fantastic to see the beaches with our own eyes. Check out our picture at the monument below…

We have been very fortunate with the weather today, the sun has been shining and it’s been pretty warm. We spent the afternoon at the beach enjoying the sunshine, playing football and having lots of fun. We explored Blankenberge and made ourselves  comfortable in our rooms. The hotel has been renovated since last year and is looking absolutely fantastic.

Tonight we’ve enjoyed a delicious dinner in the hotel and then headed back to the beach for some more sandy fun. Our final call tonight was the waffle stand while a few of us decided to go for frites. A wonderful first day! 🙂

P6m

In maths we have been working on decimals and division.

In music and drama, we have been learning and practising a dance that we will show to parents at the Celebrating Success Assembly!

We have been researching the case for and against Scottish independence.  We have been sourcing relevant information and making notes to help us to structure our arguments.

We are all very proud of Rabeea, who sung beautifully in the Balbardie’s Got Stars in their Eyes final.  Well done Rabeea 🙂

P2/1 had fun decorating gingerbread men!

This week in class we are reading the story of The Gingerbread Man.

For home learning this week one of your tasks is to talk about:

  • Why you think the gingerbread man ran away?
  • How did the fox trick him?
  • Would you have helped him escape?

On Monday, we had lots of fun decorating yummy gingerbread men in class.  We made sure we ate them quickly before they could run away!

Sam chose this week’s WOW word from the story and our new word is sly.  It’s a very short word but it started a great discussion about sneaky tricks and cunning plans.  Thank you Sam for spotting such an interesting word!

We had fun making a WANTED poster for the gingerbread man and had to describe him very carefully.

We also worked hard to put the story back into the right order after it was all jumbled up!  Well done everyone.

Scottish Wildlife!

Today we had a visit from Emma from the SSPCA.  The SSPCA looks after animals in Scotland.  We learned lots of interesting facts about what to do and not do if we see wildlife in trouble.  For example we should not touch young animals as their parents will not look after them again.  When hedgehog’s wake up from hibernation you could feed them cat food (but not fishy ones).  If you are concerned you should call 03000 999 999.  We played Top Trumps which told us about rescues that the SSPCA had done.  There were facts about the animals, species information and rescue information.

Class 3 shake it all about!

This week in Class 3 we made milkshake. Some people made strawberry milkshakes and some others made banana milkshakes. Aidan made a milkshake for himself and for Class 2 to taste. Aidan liked the taste of his but would add more strawberries the next time. We had to write down a list of ingredients and instructions on how to make the milkshake. We needed fruit, milk and ice-cream.

Josh didn’t like the milkshake Mrs.Stewart made as he does not like bananas. Liam liked the smell of his but not the taste. Geordie used Crusha mix instead of fruit to make his milkshake.

Aidan is now working on level 3 maths and is becoming a maths genius!  Well done Aidan :). Josh has been working hard to measure volume using litres. Liam is learning about how much things cost using 1p, 2p,  5p, 10p and 20p. This week Geordie was the star writer and he chose a calculator from the special box.

The final of Balbardie has Stars in Their Eyes was on Wednesday and although Geordie did not win he received a special certificate for making it to the final. Fantastic Geordie!

Garden Fun in P1g!

We have enjoyed our new topic ‘Gardner’s World’ this week. We have transformed our role play area into a treehouse and made bird feeders to hang up in our gardens at home. A huge thank you to Mrs Jamieson for organising that for us! We also studied an artist called Georgia O’Keefe’s paintings for inspiration and used pastels to create our own flowers. We learned all about the basic plant and created one and labelled each part. We now know how each part of the plant plays an important part to keep the plant alive including the roots, stem, flower and leaves.

Next week we are looking forward to our trip to the Five Sisters Zoo!

Mr Bear’s Holiday

Mr Bear’s Holiday

We have enjoyed listening to the story ‘Mr Bear’s Holiday’.   In the story, Mr Bear and his family set off on a camping trip.  We discussed the things that we would need to pack for a camping holiday and helped to create our own Balbardie Camp Site!  We collected sticks, twigs, leaves and grass with Mr Marsden for our camp site.  Joe and Jayden have had lots of fun in the role play area.  Joe and Jayden love to pretend that the rain has suddenly come on and they have to get inside the tent as quickly as possible!  Jayden has been making Miss Barrie some lovely cups of tea in the camp site.

The boys had great fun in the Sensory Room this week.  The Sensory Room was transformed into a camp site with lots of things to see, smell, taste, touch and hear.  We have been learning about our senses and using our knowledge to create some lovely senses poems.

“My tongue went bursting with delicious flavour.” Cody

“The grass smells like a garden.” Jayden

“I saw a tent, like at the shows!” Joe

“It’s going to rain down, ssshhh.”  Lewis

“Marshmallow tastes like yummy ice cream!” Joe

“The wind went wooosh!” Cameron

Next week, we will add some WOW words to our poems and enter them into the Young Writer of the Year competition.

 Snack Time

Every day we use good table manners at snack time.  We always try to say please and thank you.  We enjoy helping to set the table and prepare the food.  This week we have enjoyed making tortilla wraps with cheese and cucumber inside.  Liam loves to help chop the fruit as he likes to learn if the fruit has any seeds inside and if they are big seeds or small seeds.

Lewis has been working very hard on his spreading skills this week.  He is able to spread the butter on his wrap, all by himself.  Joe likes to wrap up the tortilla like a telescope!  We had fun saying ‘AHOY MATEY’ once we managed to roll our tortilla.

Lots to enjoy in P2pg

The children have been enjoying lots of things this week, including …

“Making our Torah scrolls in RE.” Ciaran and Steven.

“Big Maths Challenge.” Murray and Gabriel.

“Writing our Jack and the Beanstalk stories, Stars in their eyes, practicing for our assembly and making our scrolls in RE.” Jennie.

“Everything.” Ty.

Many of the children enjoyed watching the Got Stars in their Eyes and proudly cheered on Zoe from our class.  Well done Zoe, you were fab!

The children really enjoyed learning about Judaism whilst looking at faiths around the world and making our Torah scrolls.  Lots more to look at over the next few weeks.

All the children are working hard practicing for our assembly next Friday and we are looking forward to seeing you all there.

Well done P2pg.

P4a

This week we have been learning about comics; we learnt that our eyes see a lot of information which helps us to read and understand what is going on in the story. We used this knowledge to describe everything in a picture from the comic and we actually wrote screeds!

In maths we are learning our times tables and also about time. This week we learnt how to read information from a block calendar.

In topic we have been learning about the skeleton and its function. Abby very kindly brought in a skeleton which Mrs. Ghafoor put up onto the wall along with Lily’s poster. We know that the skeleton supports us, helps us move and protects our organs.

Enjoy your weekend

Two weeks into science and fun!

Hello parents and pupils! After the Easter Holidays we had two wonderful weeks! The work and behaviour all children have demonstrated has been amazing! We are all happy to have Miss Robertson in our team adding to our team work!
We were really into push and pull forces last week. We had so much fun playing ‘tug of war’ and learning to congratulate the winning team, accept the fact that we can lose in a game and try harder the next time. We have also been creative making our own swings!
This week we have been small researchers! We have done our research on items that can be attracted by magnets and today it was the first time that we had the chance to shoot during basketball activities. Everybody was just great with excellent basketball skills! Mr Jeffries is doing a fantastic job with our small athletes!
More news coming next week! Have a nice weekend everybody!

New Life in P5ms

This week we started our ‘What a Wonderful World’ project.

We shared our thoughts on how life began on Earth:

Life travelled to Earth on a meteor.           Amy

Life began in the sea and some of the creatures learned to crawl onto land.     Nathan

Life started on Mars but travelled to Earth.     Lauren U

Life on Earth is all part of somebody’s dream.  Paul

Each of us also discovered a new species. We are looking forward to seeing how they survive in the Circle of Life.

We prepared our aquarium for our sea monkeys and are keeping our fingers crossed that the eggs will hatch.

Who’s raving about reading this week?

Flyn has chosen a book about plant eating dinosaurs to study for his Reading Journal home learning tasks this term. He chose, along with Callum, to record some interesting facts from his book during our Reading Rave. We were interested to hear about the different ways the plant eating dinosaurs defended themselves from the meat eaters.

Thanks for sharing boys!

From the Blog Post Box:

Something I did well this week was…

…predict what would happen next in Rockford’s Rock Opera.        Kyra

…learn my 5 x table off by heart. Lauren U

…building up my multiplication skills.   Declan

getting stuck into my project book.        Amy
