Skoog!

We use lots of ICT in Class 1 to help us with our learning.  We have a new resource, it is called a Skoog!   The boys in Class 1 like to say ‘Skoog’.  It is a funny word!  We enjoyed experimenting with the Skoog to make some interesting music using a variety of instruments.   The boys in Class 1 really liked the tactile element of the Skoog.  We can change the sensitivity of the Skoog to encourage gentle hands or a firmer grip.

“It is soft and smooth.” Cody

“It is hard to press now.  I think it is falling asleep.” Cameron

Cody enjoyed choosing different instruments to create sad songs and happy songs.

Cameron liked to hear the sounds of the different instruments; his favourite instruments were the oriental strings and the rock guitar!

Liam likes to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the piano.  Liam listened very carefully to the different keys on the Skoog and worked out all by himself, how to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Jayden played ‘Old Macdonald Had A Farm’, by following the colours on the SMARTboard and pressing the corresponding colours on the Skoog.

Joe created some fast, energetic music and loved playing the horn and the drums!

Miss Barrie enjoyed trying to play ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ by following the colours on the SMARTboard.  We are looking forward to using the Skoog again and showing our friends in class 2 and 3 how to use it!

We also enjoy using the Nintendo DS.  We can combine our drawings with recordings of our voices to create our own animations.  Liam loves to show his animations to his friends during Golden Time.  We can also link up our devices and chat to each other by typing messages.

This week went on a bear hunt!  Liam found Mr Bear sitting on the bird house, in the garden.  Liam is going to take good care of Mr Bear over the weekend and on Monday we will read Liam’s email to find out what he has been doing with Mr Bear!

P4a

This week we have enjoyed learning about skeletons and muscles. We learnt the function of them and also the names of some of them. The funniest muscle name we found was ‘Gluteus Maximus’ and it sent us into fits of laughter everytime it was mentioned!

We had the opportunity to go bowling. Some of us were not sure if we would enjoy it but we all did. It was great fun. The trickiest part was trying to control the ball as it wouldn’t roll the way we wanted it to! We will have another four sessions to hone our skills!

We also had our Celebrating Success assembly. We loved the performances of the other classes and also enjoyed performing our song.

Enjoy your weekend!

P.S Come along tomorrow morning, 10:00am – 1:00 pm, to help with tidying up the playground. See you there!

P5a Wha’ Hae

This week we all enjoyed performing Scots Wha’ Hae at our Celebrating Success assembly. We made shields and some of us made swords. Five of us won awards.

We have started a new set of class novels – we are reading Shakespeare stories that have been adapted for children. So far we have read King Lear and are currently reading Richard III.

Next week we are going to learn more about William Wallace. We are also going to be able to read all the Young Writer entries from our class – fingers crossed one us wins!

Miss Anderson and P5a 🙂

P4l Bowled Over

Hello Everyone

On Wednesday this week P4 were invited to try out bowling at Bathgate High Bowling Club.  Everyone had a great time and the coaches even laid on drinks and snacks.  We are going to go for 6 weeks and learn how to be good bowlers.  Here are some of our thoughts,

It was good because we got a snack and they taught us the basic things we need to know. Shaun B

I like it because it was fun.  I didn’t know there was another type of bowling other than ten pin. Rachel

I liked it because we got to have lots of turns, we put the mat down and throw the jack. Catherine

We had a think and lots of us thought that Joe was showing signs of being a really good bowler.

Everyone is looking forward to going again on the 22nd May.

Bye

V.E.Day celebrations in 7M

On Friday we had a V.E. Day party as an end to our World War 2 topic.  V.E (Victory in Europe) Day is celebrated on May 8th each year and signifies the end of WW2 in Europe.  As a class we looked at WW2 songs which were sung at that particular time and we noted that one was about the white cliffs of Dover 🙂 We made table centrepieces, hats out newspaper and V.E Day posters.  Thank you to Mrs Jamieson who made WW2 cookies with us using an authentic wartime recipe…not as sweet as we are used to but they tasted very nice.  We also had  meat paste, cucumber and jam sandwiches and we tasted SPAM meat…We decided that we quite like the taste!

Did You Know?

P5ms have been investigating the scientific theories on how life on Earth began. Did you know these fascinating facts?

• The entire universe used to be squeezed together so tightly that it could fit on a pinhead.     Amy

• Then there was a BIG BANG!  Antonia

• Earth was a ball of lava. No life could survive the poisonous gases in the atmosphere.  Lauren K

 • Earth cooled down and water formed in the craters.   Jack

• The first living things were single cell creatures that formed in the tidal pools.   Adam

• These cells produced oxygen which helped create more complex creatures.   Kendal

• Natural Selection decided how the plants and animals would develop.  Finlay

Who’s raving about reading this week?

This week Chloe and Kyra used our Reading Rave to find out more about our new caterpillars. They read about the life cycle of a butterfly as it develops from an egg to a caterpillar, then from a chrysalis to a butterfly. We are looking forward to observing our caterpillars through the different stages and investigating what we need to do to care for them as they grow and develop. Thanks girls!

From the Blog Post Box:

We are so proud of Jay, Emily, Chloe and Kyra for achieving their Celebrating Success certificates. Well done!

Somebody else I am proud of this week…..

…is William for working hard on his positive behaviour.    Adam

…is Adam for having a good attitude.    Isla

…is Declan for shaving one minute off his Beat the Clock record.   Kyra

…is Kendal because she had stage fright but got up and performed anyway.  Ellie

Finally, we would like to say “Goodbye” to Amy and wish her well in her new school. Keep in touch Amy, we will miss you!

P1g Bug Fun!

We had fun going on a minibeast hunt in the school gardens! We found slugs, spiders, snails, worms, ants, butterflies, millipedes and woodlouse. We looked at these minibeasts under a magnifying glass as we learned it makes objects look bigger then we recorded our findings on a checklist.

We also perfomed  the song ‘Reach for the Stars’ for our Celebrating Success assembly. Well done to Charlie, Grace, Findlay and Emma who got a certificate. We enjoyed our family and friends coming to see us and Miss Goff said she was very proud of us!

We have been very responsible showing the new primary 1 children around our classroom and telling them what primary 1 is like.

Lastly, we have finished tranforming our role play area into treehouse. Thanks to Jim our janitor for building us a platform to make it more realistic!

Active maths in P2lg

This week in numeracy we have been learning about how to find the area of shapes by counting in squares. Today we took some squares outside and made some shapes of our own that all had an area of 10 squares. The playground ended up being too windy for us so we moved to the dining room where Mrs Gallagher set us some challenges. The first challenge was to make a square using more than 10 of our small squares. Harvey and Cameron were the first pupils to complete this activity, you can see them in the picture below. Our next challenge was to make a letter of the alphabet. Cole and Kate did a great job of making a letter E as you can see below too.

This week we have also had some special visistors in our classroom. Mrs Jamieson brought in some tadpoles for us to see. We are looking after them for a few days to see how they change before they go back to the pond. We have been very keen to learn about tadpoles and have enjoyed reading about them and drawing pictures.

Today at Celebrating Success assembly we were proud of Megan, Lauryn, Katie, Lewis and Caitlin who all received certificates. We all did very well singing our songs too.

Next week will be library visits on Thursday so remember to bring books and cards along then.

P3b have been learning…

..our Celebrating Success song ‘Feeling Groovy’. We hope visitors enjoyed it!

We have chosen our best writing for the Young Writer’s competetion.

In PE, we have been learning about stamina.

We have been reminding ourselves about fractions and comparing them.

Our learning about farms has included dairy farms and we have drawn an aerial view of the farm we designed.  We are looking forward to our farm visit next week!

Courage in P3lm

P3lm have been learning about courage and the many different ways we show courage. We all agree that there are a lot of people who who show courage and bravery everyday. We had a very interesting talk about the people we think show courage and what actions are brave or can be a bit silly. We made courage badges in class which we will present to anyone in our class who shows courage in any shape or form. We also discussed who our own personal Hero is and why. Who is your personal Hero?

Highlights of the week: Planting and Floating in the swimming pool!

In Balbardie Primary School we are very committed to our numeracy and literacy targets. However, we manage to combine hard work with fun. And we can do both with great success!

This week, on Wednesday we had an amazing time planting flowers in the playground. We had everything we needed: gloves, shovels, soil, baby flowers and a lot of energy! Apart from learning by experiencing the planting process, we are now more interested in keeping the playground nice and tidy. After all, we put a lot of work each of us on it! And on Thursday, at the end of a swimming lesson, we had fun in the swimming pool using pool floats!

More news coming next week!

Have a nice weekend! Buy!

Class 3 out and about :)

This week in Class 3 we went to Lana’s cafe. We walked down to the cafe with Mrs Stewart and Miss Waddell. The weather was nice and sunny when we went.  We were learning how to order our own snack and to pay for the snack after we had finished. Geordie had some toast and an orange fruit shoot, the toast was tasty. Josh enjoyed an empire biscuit and an orange fruit shoot, it was really good. Euan had some ice- cream with sprinkles on it and also toffee syrup along with a fruit shoot.  Nathan had a really big slice of chocolate cake which looked really tasty. This was our first time since the start of the year going Out and About. We hope to visit the shops or the library on our next adventure. We all showed good manners and remembered to say please and thank-you. Mrs Stewart and Miss Waddell were very proud of Class 3. We also made funny vegetables with Mrs Strain. It was fun.

Aidan’s new tutor that he will have next year paid him a visit in Class 3.  Aidan thought she was really nice and was pleased to meet her. He is looking forward to going to high school after the summer even though he is going to be leaving some good friends behind. We will miss you Aidan and hopefully you can stay in touch.

We are on holiday from school Monday and Tuesday but look forward to being back at school on Wednesday.

What p2lg have been doing this week

This week we have been learning about fractions in numeracy. We have been learning how to find half of a number. It’s quite tricky but our fractions boards help us to see how to do it. Mrs Gallagher also brought in some oranges to show us that a fraction of something is smaller than the whole thing. We enjoyed eating them afterwards as a snack.

In topic we have been learning about houses and homes on the past. We learned that we are very lucky to live in modern houses as there were many things about living in houses in the past that were not so nice, for example having to go outside to use the toilet. Mrs Jamieson brought in some items for us to have a look at. We enjoyed trying out the inkwell and pen to do some writing and using the meat mincer.

Here is what we had to say about our learning this week:

Colin: “We heard a different Three Little Pigs story at the library. I liked it.”

Aidan: “We did writing about a haunted house for the Young Writer competition.”

Lauryn: “I liked going to the library.”

Archie: “I enjoyed learning about fractions this week.”

Lennox: “I liked seeing Mrs Jamieson’s artefacts that she brought in to show us.”

The Five Sisters Zoo

We had a fantastic day at the Five Sisters Zoo on Tuesday.  We received interesting talks about the bears and tropical birds, viewed a range of other animals in the zoo and had great fun playing on the pirate ship.  At lunch time we ate in the picnic area as the sun was shining and afterwards we played in the park.  Here are some of our highlights:

Caitlin- ‘I liked seeing the bears. Carmen was swimming in the water and playing with a log.’

Kayleigh and Leia liked playing in the dungeon on the pirate ship.

Annabelle- ‘I liked walking across the wobbly bridge on the pirate ship.’

Ben- ‘I liked playing with Evan and Reece on the pirate ship.’

Rachael- ‘I liked looking at the wallabies-they look like kangaroos!’

Aidan- ‘Parrots can talk.  They were squawking really loud!’

Success!

Our sea-monkeys hatched! We have 7 sea-monkey hatchlings. They are each only 1mm long. We look forward to seeing them grow. We love watching them play with one another. It looks like they’re playing tig!

We have created a log book to record our observations.

Many of us are so fascinated by our new pets that we’re saving up to buy our own!

We’ll keep you informed on their progress.

P5ms

Who’s raving about reading this week?

This week Amy and Lauren were reading an Art Attack book. They carefully followed the instructions to make a beautiful photo frame.

Well done girls.

From the Blog Post Box:

Something interesting I learned this week was….

…that the whole universe used to fit on a pin head!          Lauren U

…that Matt Cardle used to have cancer. I found this out as I carried out personal research for my project.       Lauren C

… that the Earth was created from a Big Bang.                Declan

Belgium Blog – Thursday

What a busy day!

We went shopping this morning before heading off to Passchendaele to visit the Tyne Cot cemetery. It is the biggest Commonwealth cemetery in central Europe and contains the names of 30,000 fallen soldiers and almost 2000 graves.

Next we visited the memorial museum and learned about the battles of Ypres and ventured through a reconstruction of an underground trench system.

Out next stop was the German Langemark cemetery followed by our visit to the Bayernwald trenches. We had an hour to run around here and explore the various trench systems and bunkers. We had a massive game of tig which even Mr Welsh joined in!

Our final stop of the day was at the Menin Gate where we took part in the daily Last Post ceremony. Kirstie and Ross represented the school as head boy and girl and laid our school wreath amongst the others.

It has been a very interesting and moving day.

One more sleep left then it is time for Plopsaland and the journey back home…
