P3b Learning

A few weeks ago we recorded what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story Percy the Park keeper: After the Storm. This week we reflected on this to write a summary of the story in our own words. We did very well with this!

As part of our community topic, we have made a map of a small area in Bathgate. This week, we remembered our address to look at some of our houses on Google maps!

In addition, P3 came up with a campaign idea to help improve our community. We want to encourage people, if possible, to avoid taking cars the whole way to school. We discussed how walking and cycling is good for us and helps us exercise more and how taking a bus helps keep our planet green! We also think it would be safer for us as there wouldn’t be as man cards outside our school. We linked these to rights such as the right to be healthy and a clean and safe environment.

For writing last week we wrote a list of rules we would make if we were mayor of Bathgate. We used bullet points to write our list and some of us used joining words to explain why we would set these rules. We had super ideas. For example, Evie said she would make no school uniforms so that everyone was comfy and Evan would raise money to people who needed it!

In spelling, we have been practising our words in active ways. This includes: secret message spelling words (write words with a light crayon and then go over with paint to make it stand out), secret code spelling words, the roll and spell game, making a collage of our spelling words and writing them on the Ipads. These activities help us to learn our spelling words in fun ways.

We can’t believe it is the October break already!

We have been busy building models of buildings in Bathgate. We have have worked hard in groups to use junk materials to create buildings in our local community.

We have also started a campaign to help improve our local community. We came up with lots of ideas from stopping smoking and vandalism to keeping our local areas tidy. We decided to create a campaign to encourage people to use their car less. We want to help stop global warming and create a cleaner environment in our community. We created posters to tell people what else they can do and how it will help. We know that poster need to have clear writing, be colourful and include pictures to get people’s attention. We are going to put these up around the school.

We hope you have a great October break!

Inky’s Vowel House

This week we have been learning new sounds that are in Inky’s Vowel House!

We decided to go outside and draw our own Vowel Houses using chalk in the playground. Here are some of our fantastic houses.

We even did one together using the playground house outside!

Once we came back inside, we looked at our pictures and discussed the story again. Miss Wilson is so impressed with how well we have remembered the story of Inky’s Vowel House!! We have remembered all of the characters and all of the sounds they make.

The Vowel House story is:
The donkey lives on the top floor and he says “ee”
The old man who lives underneath is hard of hearing who says “ai”
The old lady who lives underneath who cracks eggs says “e”
In the basements lives some ants “a”
We don’t like the ants! So we run upstairs to turn the light on “o”
It won’t switch on! So we say “oa”
Then we run to the top and there’s a ghost “oo”
The ghost scares Inky the mouse and he knocks over the ink “i”
It’s okay because we put up the umbrella “u”

Here are some pictures of our fabulous chalk drawings as well of Inky’s Vowel House:

For all Primary 1 parents, a letter was sent out inviting you to attend a session held by Alison Paterson to tell you more about Vowel House and Colourful Consonants. If you would like to attend it will be held on October 30th from 9:00-10:15am in school. We hope you can make it 🙂

Have a lovely holiday everyone!

Pupil of the week – Kari Nixon

Table of the week – Jamzi – Zoe, Jamie, Iona and Meadow.

Busy,busy,busy!

We have had lots of fun this week with our problem solving challenges. In maths we did a dice challenge and we had to use all four operations to complete the challenge. We had to roll three dice then write the numbers at the top of our sheet. Next we had to make as many sums as we could from the three numbers using addition, multiplication, subtraction and division. If any answer you got appeared on the number grid you shaded it and repeated the process until all your numbers were shaded.

Jamie – it was really fun because it tested my skills using the four operations. I found it tricky but I actually know a lot more than I thought I did!!

Another problem solving challenge this week was working in pairs and using only one hand each we had to tie a shoelace.

Iona – I liked this and if you wanted to tie the shoelace you had to talk a lot with your partner.

Zoe – I liked the shoelace challenge when we had to do it alone because I had to really concentrate to get my fingers to do what I wanted them to do!

We have been doing lots of times table practice and really enjoy using the loop cards. Our best time yet is 1minute 45 seconds.

Music has been really tricky the past couple of weeks but everyone has learned how to create a rhythm, write it down in the correct format and then perform their rhythm reading from their music. We used body rhythm and percussion instruments.

One more week to go !!! Have a great weekend.

Confucius say: “This is our week in p7b!”

This week we have been learning about the famous Chinese philosopher, Confucius.

Paul: “Confucius lived thousands of years ago and is famous because he invented Confucianism and a lot of people follow it to help them have a better life.”

Kai: “He taught children to respect of their parents and their older brothers and sisters.”

Jack: “He was one of the most intelligent people in China and a group of people wrote down every thing he said in books called analects.”

Chloe: “If people had a problem or falling out they would go to Confucius and he would help them sort it out.”

We have looked at some of his most famous sayings and we picked out our favourites:

Ellie: “I liked the saying don’t use a cannonball to kill a mosquito because I found it helpful not to use up all my energy on small things.”

Paul: “I liked forget injuries, never forget kindnesses because it tells us that we should think about who cares for us and all the things they do for us.”

Antonia: “Confucius say fine words and an insinuating appearance are seldom associated with true virtue. I like this because it is true that it’s what’s on the inside that counts more than the outside.”

Lauren U: “I liked the real fault is to have faults and not amend them because everybody makes mistakes and we should learn from them.”

Lauren C: “I liked be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes because it means if you do something just try and learn from it instead of giving yourself a hard time.”

Declan: “My favourite was success depends upon previous preparations because it tells us we need to plan properly for things to do them well.”

Who has impressed?

Jay: “I have been impressed with Jack because he got 64 in his Big Maths. Well done to everybody else who beat their best score!”

Lauren C: “Flyn and Harry have impressed me with the way they have taken on the roles of Wishy and Washy with enthusiasm.”

Ellie: “Antonia impressed me by being selected as captain of the school football team.”

Paul: “I’m impressed with my p1 buddy Jay because he was doing well with his storybook and trying to read it himself.”

Lauren U: “Kyra has impressed me by getting onto step 3 this week.”

Adam: “Declan has impressed me in the chopstick challenge because he never gave up even though he found it tough.”

Harry: “Jay has impressed because he was fantastic at using the chopsticks during the chopstick challenge.”

Declan: Adam impressed me this week as he has been a great friend by being helpful.”

Emily: “I impressed myself because even though I couldn’t use them before I tried hard and got better at chopsticks.”

Antonia: “Finlay impressed me this week because he has been really kind to me.”

Mr Berginis: “I was very impressed with how well the class understood the sayings of Confucius and they were able to pick out the ones which they thought could help them in their lives. My favourite is forget injuries because it is important to forgive people so that they can forgive themselves as well.”

Testing Trebuchets in 5m

This week we took part in our first Home Team Challenge. We had to design a trebuchet which would knock down a Jenga wall with the load of one marble.

Working in our Home Teams, we had to create a design plan and make a list of resources that we would need. Then, having gathered our equipment, we began to build. It was exciting work with most teams visiting the Test Desk several times to try out our models. We made adaptations to improve the performance of our trebuchets.

Finally it was time to judge the performance of our models. We put rules in place to make sure each trebuchet was tested under the same conditions.

It was a nerve racking experience but eventually the testing was complete. The winning trebuchets were created by the Mini Minions and Candy Chips. Both trebuchets scored Level 2 damage under test conditions. This meant that they were powerful enough to alter the shape of the Jenga wall.

Can you see the tension in our faces?

P5d

A great post camp week in P5d!

Pupil of the week this week goes to EVERYONE in the class as I was very proud of each and every child in the way the conducted themselves at Lowport. They are a credit to the school and their families.

We all returned to school on Monday excited to be back together again. We had a fantastic time at Lowport and would like to share some of our highlights.

Aidan – I really enjoyed the woodland adventure.

James – Canoeing was harder than I thought it would be and I was surprised how well I did.

Evie – The people in my group got to have a little bit of a water fight when we were on the canal canoeing!!

Zoe – I had a great time on the woodland adventure. There was a bit of a steep scramble up some muddy rocks and although it was a struggle I didn’t give in and I did a victory dance when I got to the top !!!

Daniel – It was really scary when we all had to get into the one canoe but it was fun as well. It was really fun when Mrs D put some music on and we all sat around in the girls room and just chatted and had fun.

Aaron – I really liked the swimming especially because Mrs Gray was in the pool as well. We were all splashing Mrs Gray and she splashed us back.

Topic/Writing

We have been continuing our topic on the Scottish Wars of Independence. This week we are learning about writing a recount. Our focus has been how to use our writing planners effectively and how to uplevel our use of time connectives. We are going to write a recount of the death of William Wallace.

Science

This week we were learning about dissolving. We carried out a few experiments with sand, salt and sugar. Here is what we found out –

James – we put some sugar into hot water and gave it a stir. The sugar dissolved. We found out that sugar takes much longer to dissolve in cold water.

Viggo – We mixed sand with hot water and the sand sank to the bottom and didn’t dissolve. I think this happened because the sand is made upof hard crystals and the sugar is made up of soft crystals.

That’s it for another week. Have a great weekend!
