P5d

We have had a great week in P5d!

Writing

This week we worked very hard to write a poem about our favourite place in Scotland. It was a different poem to the kind we are used to because this one didn’t rhyme!  Here is an example of one of our poems. This one was written by William Knox –

My Wee Piece of Scotland

Callander

Me and my two brothers going fishing,

Having fun,

Play fighting on the grass,

Staying there for two days,

A place where I feel happy,

Callander will always be My Wee Piece of Scotland!

Maths

In maths we have been learning to make a symmetrical pattern. We found it tricky to begin with but in the end we all managed to produce a symmetrical picture, some of us with one line of symmetry and some of us with two lines of symmetry. Next week we will be learning about grid referencing.

Music

In music this week we were learning about Johannes Brahms. We listened to ‘Brahms Lullaby’ then had a discussion about how the music made us feel and what images it conjured up in our heads. We then had to close our eyes and without lifting our pencil from the paper transfer the music into a picture. Here is a picture of how relaxed we were during this activity –

Assembly

Today we had our class assembly ‘Rhythm Rocks’ where we were able to show the whole school how we use the drums in our learning. Mrs Drummond was very proud of the whole class and we all got a smelly sticker for our efforts!

Have a great weekend everyone!

This week in p2bg

This week with Mrs Waddell we have been working on telling the time. We enjoyed making our own little clocks to help us. We also were doing different activity stations for our topic of Houses and Homes which involved research using information books, trying to make windproof houses and making our own houses from Lego and Playdoh.

With Mrs Gallagher this week we have made snowglobes to sell at the Christmas Fayre. The look really great! We also started our topic ‘The Great Pet Sale.’ We have lots of ideas about animals we would like to make for our classroom pet shop and are really excited about starting this display next week.

Our pupil of the week was Denholm for excellent work on numbers beyond 100 and for making a really great snowglobe. Well done Denholm!

Our week in p7b

Nativity Party in P1W

This week we wrote our invitations for our Nativity Party. Miss Wilson made a template where we had to include:
-WHO we were inviting
-WHERE it is going to be held
-WHEN it will be and what time
-WHAT you are invited to

Everybody made their own invitation and we are going to send them home really soon!
Our Nativity Party will be:
-WHERE -> at Balbardie Primary School
-WHEN -> Tuesday 9th December or Wednesday 10th December
*A letter will be sent out nearer the time*

Here are some of our Nativity Party invitations:

Pupil of the week:
Aaron Tennant for working well with a partner to produce an excellent Venn diagram 🙂 Well done!

P5m’s Secret Weapon

Did you know that Geology is the study of Earth and what it is made of? Sounds quite a tricky subject for a P5 class doesn’t it? Don’t worry, we’ve got a secret weapon to help us – chocolate! This week we examined the inside of a crème egg and discovered that it was a bit like the inside of Earth with a crust, a mantle and a core. Much tastier though!!

From the Blog Post Box:

This week I learned…

…to do 20 keepie-uppies.                              Geo

…how to make chocolate crispies and what ingredients you need. You use cornflakes and melted chocolate and mix it all together.                             Louisa

…how to do a handspring in gymnastics.                                              Madeleine

…why we put tinsel on a Christmas tree.                                Declan

…to be good at football and to chip a ball up.                     Connor

…why the two minute silence is really important.                               Gemma B

…about Earth. It is made up of three main parts – the crust, the mantle and the core.      Ben

…how to train my rabbit. I am training her to come to me when called and to go on my lap. It is already advanced! I am also learning to do huge dividing sums. It is tricky but I’m thoroughly enjoying it!                       Lucy

P4m

This week P4m have been very creative designing a new fitness invention to finish off our inventions topic. We looked on the BBC news website at a new product that was launched during the week which aims to monitor different aspects of your health and fitness whilst you are wearing it. Our challenge was to create something that was better than the one we had read about in the article. In groups we came up with some great ideas and next week each group will be able to present their ideas to the rest of the class!
We have also been busy this week writing newspaper articles about our trip to the handball festival. We came up with some wonderful headlines…..
BALBARDIE PUTS THEIR HANDS UP FOR HANDBALL!
BALBARDIE WINS HANDBALL FESTIVAL!
BALBARDIE SCORE 80 GOALS AT HANDBALL FESTIVAL!
We found maths quite challenging this week: we were revising our times tables in Big Maths, and finding the numbers half way between two numbers. We know we will all get much better at using these skills with lots of practice!

P3e

This week we have been learning all about Bonfire night. We listened to the story of Guy Fawkes and we know that we set off fireworks and have bonfires every year on the 5th November to remember the gunpowder plot. We were learning to retell the story of the gunpowder plot and were learning how to write in the format of a newspaper article. We had to come up with a headline for our newspaper. We thought of some key words about the story to get people’s attention. We wrote some fantastic newspaper articles about the story and included all the main facts.

We have also been learning about how to stay safe around fireworks and bonfires. We came up with a list of rules to follow when near fireworks and used these rules to design firework safety posters.

In art this week we have been learning how to use line and colour effectively. We create wonderful bonfire pictures using crepe paper and created fireworks using chalk.

We hope you had a great bonfire night and were very safe!

See you next week!

Our week in p7b

Our learning

Emily: I enjoyed learning about Dunkirk this week and it was really interesting. I thought it was a success because they rescued a lot more soldiers off the beach than they thought they would.

William: I liked talking and learning about Remembrance Day. We also learned that VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) was in 1945 after Germany surrendered.

Isla: I enjoyed writing our Remembrance poems because I thought I wouldn’t be able to do very many verses but I did and I felt proud.

Kai: I enjoyed writing my poem about Remembrance because I liked using the rhyming words and also because I liked writing about the soldiers.

Lauren U: This week we started our Maths Wall of Fame. We’ve been using different numeracy games on the iPad and DS and we have to try and beat each other’s best scores. I like doing it because it’s fun!

Lauren C – I enjoyed learning more about Dunkirk because I know that some of my family were involved. Unfortunately they were killed in the battle.

Finlay: I enjoyed starting off doing Literature Circles and seeing who was in my group. My book is really good so far and is all about football and it’s called Kick-Off. Nobody believes that the main character can get into the team and do what he thinks he can.

Jay: I enjoyed doing Literature Circles because I got a new book called Lord Loss and it has lots of gore and is a bit disgusting it’s still really good!

Who has impressed?

Chloe: My whole table (the Home Guard) has impressed me because we won table of the week for the second week in a row.

William: Callum has impressed me because he hasn’t swung on his chair again this week!

Adam: Declan has impressed me because in maths he did really well and he had good accuracy.

Kendal: I’m proud of Ellie this week because she got a new high score for Big Maths Beat That and she improved her score on the Wall of fame.

Lauren K: I was proud of Paul this week because he worked as hard as he could this week and concentrated well this week.

Emily: I’m proud of Isla because in music she played a new piece and she done excellently.

Isla: Emily has impressed me because she was brave in music and kept going on her own.

Ellie: Olivia has impressed me because her poem about remembering the fallen soldiers was amazing.

Lauren U: My table impressed me by trying their very best to win table of the week even though we ended up second.

Declan: Adam has impressed me because in his maths he only got two wrong which means he had good accuracy.

Finlay: Nathan has impressed me because he bought his Big Maths best score. Well done to everybody else who beat their best.

Lauren C: Antonia has impressed me because her name appears so many times on the Wall of Fame!

Antonia: Lauren C impressed me with how well she did in music and she kept going on the correct bit even when I got it wrong.

Taylor: Lauren K has impressed me because she got the top score for Twinoo and got onto the Wall of Fame.

Mr Berginis: I was extremely proud of the Remembrance poems the class wrote this week and I can’t wait to get them on display so the rest of the school can see how fantastic they are!

P3b

This week we completed some activities related to bonfire night. For story writing, we wrote a senses poem to describe bonfire night. We used our senses and adjectives to describe things we might see, hear, smell, taste and feel.

Here is Aidan’s:

I see fireworks sparkling,
I hear fireworks exploding,
I smell giant pretzels,
I taste a yummy dominos,
I feel excited!

We also read information about firework safety and took notes of the important points. With Mrs Collings we made impressive posters about firework safety.

Have fun and stay safe this weekend,

Miss Bollen and P3b

P5d

This week we have been working particularly hard in maths and our class topic.

In maths we have been learning to identify lines of symmetry. We were tracing different shapes and then we folded them in half to see if they were symmetrical. Some of us found this a bit tricky but we all agreed it was a fun way to learn about symmetry.

We have started our new topic A Slice of Scotland and before we focus on specific parts of Scotland and how the landscape was formed we are learning about our place in the world. Here are some facts we have learned –

Jamie – the world has seven continents

Aidan – I have learned the names of the seven continents they are North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Antarctica and Australia.

Aaron – I have learned the difference between Great Britain and the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom includes Northern Ireland.

Meadow – I learned that the continent I live on is Europe.

David – I have learned the three countries that make up Great Britain are Wales, Scotland and England.

We are now going to learn about West Lothian and how the landscape of Scotland was formed.

Haver a great weekend!

Remember, Remember!

This week we have been learning about fire safety. On Wednesday, it was Bonfire Night! We all talked about being safe if you were going to watch a firework display.

Some safety tips are:
-Stay far enough back from the firework display – Dylan
-The fireworks might explode and burn you! – Hannah
-Don’t run back to a lit firework – Lewis
-Don’t go too near the fireworks – Aaron
-Keep your pets indoors so they don’t get scared – Lucas
-Keep the fireworks you are not using safe away in a box – Alfie
-Don’t let your cats go outside – Farrah
-Keep babies inside if they are scared too – Erin

We also made pictures in class of fireworks
-I liked making my picture – Jodie
-We used chalk, pens, pencils and tissue paper. We scrunched up the tissue paper to make small fireworks – Katie
-We used black card so it looked like night time and used coloured chalk so it looked like bright fireworks – Lucas
-We used crayons as well to make swirly fireworks! – Erin

P3 Litter Pick

As part of our community topic we created a campaign to help improve Bathgate. We decided we wanted to try and encourage people to take their car less to help the environment. As part of this we also want to encourage people to keep the environment clean and tidy. We had an idea to tidy our playground by completing a litter pick after lunch time. We were reminded of the right we have to a safe and clean environment. We collected a lot of litter and we hope we have encouraged other people to pick up their litter in the playground and put it in the bin. Mrs White was so impressed she awarded us all ten house points for our hard work.

Here are some photos:

We had a great week back after our relaxing October holidays. On Wednesday Ray’s Grandad came in to school to  do a K’NEX challenge with us. We had to work with a partner to design and make a moon buggy which could hold a shoe and a rubber. Once we had made our models we had to test them on the ramp and modify them to make them better if anything fell off. At the end of the session we all took our models in to the corridor and tested them. Our designs were all very unique and most of us managed to keep the shoe and rubber on the buggy. Abby and Erin’s moon buggy travelled the furthest so they both won a prize. It was a super morning and we all had great fun! Here are some of the pictures from the day…

Happy Halloween from p2bg

This week we have been doing some Halloween themed activities. We created wax resist drawings of Haunted Houses and then did some writing about Haunted Houses. We had to describe what the Haunted House looked like. We did a great job of describing the spooky and scary houses!

We were very excited to come into school dressed up. Here we are looking a bit different from usual:

Well done to Katie who achieved a MVP certificate from Mr Jeffries for being pupil of the month for October in PE.

Amy was our pupil of the week for coming into school with a smile this week, keep it up Amy!

We have been setting new targets for this term. Lots of people would like to get into the Golden Club this term.

Next week we will be starting our new topics of Houses and Homes (with Mrs Waddell) and Shops and Shopping (with Mrs Gallagher).

We have been learning about…

Our new topic this term is “Toy Story” – Katie

We started our “Toy Story” floorbook and our challenge this week was to ask mums, dads and grandparents what their favourite toy was when they were younger – Alfie

We have been learning about each other’s favourite toys. My favourite toy is racing cars and jets – Max

We talked about taking care of our toys and being safe with them. My favourite toy is Buzz Lightyear – Aaron

My favourite toy is Monster High dolls- Hannah

*Just a special reminder that we are beginning to work on our P1 Nativity Production. Please could you help your child learn their words. These have been sent home or will be sent home next week and are in their school bags. Thank you*
