Class 1 in the Christmas spirit!

This week we put up a Christmas tree in class. Everyone was
very excited. We are looking forward to all the nice Christmas activities over
the next few weeks.

Jake – I liked decorating the tree. The gold bauble was
beautiful.

Lewis – I have a Christmas tree in my house. There’s lots of
decorations and toys. It has a heart at the top.  The tree in school has a star at the top.

Yolie – Christmas trees. A red bauble on it.

Gabriel – I put on the Christmas baubles on the tree.

In PE we had a turn on the Wii.

Lewis – This week is good. Tigger likes to say Jiggly Bells.
I’m dancing and I was trying to have a practise for PE. Mr Jeffries told me to
dance. I danced with David and Yolie.

Jayden – In PE I played the animals CD with Mr Jeffries in
the snug. He played funky monkey. I’m really happy because Mr Jeffries brought
the Wii and we had a dance.

David – Dancing. I’m dancing to Kids in America. Golden
brown. 99 red balloons. Dancing with Mr Jeffries. Look at me doing this.

Gabriel – I loved dancing to the music on the Wii. I was
doing the nativity and then I can have Wii at Golden Time.

Joe is enjoying our class topic so much. This week he
invented a character name for himself.

Joe – I like Charlie and the Chocolate factory. I was
writing Joe Bloop. It is my chocolate name. I watched the DVD with Johnny Depp.

Maths

We have been learning to find the position of an object on a grid. We know that we have to give the bottom co-ordinate first and the side co-ordinate second. We all thought it was a fun exercise although we are not quite so excited about doing more next week because Mrs Drummond said it will be harder!

Writing/LATC

We continued or writing this week as part of our topic. We are doing a creative piece about a trip to see the Loch Ness Monster. Last week we wrote the opening and this week we have been learning how to structure the middle of our story.

LATC

We carried out an experiment with Oreo cookies this week. The three layers of the cookie represented the crust, mantle and core. We broke off the top the Oreo then broke that part in half. The two halves represented tectonic plates and we put them back on top of the Oreo and pushed them together. The pressure when the two parts came together caused the two parts to push upwards. This was a great way to learn about how mountains are formed.

Have a great weekend folks …..12 school days left !!!!!!!!

Our week in p7b

Our learning:

Kieran: In French we were revising the French words for animals and colours. I learned that noir is black and that un mouton is a sheep.

Kendal: In French I learned that un cochon means pig, un serpent is snake and rose is pink.

Declan: I learned that vert is green, blanc is white and le chat is cat.

Lauren U: We also learned about entertainment during WW2. They went to the cinema and watched propaganda films and news reports about the war. They also listened to music like Vera Lynn and Andrews Sisters.

Finlay: Children in the countryside used to watch for planes crashing and would go and collect the different bits of metal which was called shrapnel. They didn’t have TV so listened to the radio to music, reports and serials like Superman.

Kieran: One of the songs that we listened to was Pack Up Your Troubles and the soldiers used to sing it. My nana remembers my papa singing it and sometimes sings it to me.

Ellie: This week we had a live Glow meet called Choices for Life. It was about the dangers of smoking. I learned that smoking can give you wrinkles in your skin and it damages your lungs.

Antonia: We watched Liam’s Story where a boy called Liam got peer pressured into trying a cigarette but he then chose not to do it and walked away. I think giving in to the peer pressure at first wasn’t good but glad he chose to walk away eventually.

Paul: We were writing thank you letters this week and we had to make sure it was in a letter format and we will either take them to Belgium or down to the War Memorial to read them.

Adam: We also learned that rationing took place during WW2 and you could only get a little bit of food and you had to make it last all week. Also, that if you dropped or lost any food it didn’t get replaced.

Jay: We learned that at the end of WW2 America dropped a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima. It was so bright an explosion that some people vanished and all that was left behind was their shadow. Also, some people got poisoned by the nuclear energy.

Paul: We also learned that the plane that dropped the bomb was called the Enola Gay. Enola spelled backwards is alone. The explosion made the shape of a mushroom cloud and if you were close enough to see it it would have probably killed you.

Who has impressed?

Lauren C: Isla has impressed me because she is growing more confident with her oboe.

Kendal: Lauren U and Declan have impressed me because they are the first in the class to reach step 5.

Jack: Melissa from 7m impressed me by getting 3 certificates at assembly!

Kieran: Antonia has impressed me because she got 73 and beat her best in Big Maths.

Harry: Callum has impressed me because he got 50 in Big Maths and beat the record.

Taylor: Lauren K has impressed me this week by getting 80 out of 80 in Big Maths!

Kai: Euan in p2 has impressed me because he won the p2 float design prize.

Paul: Mr Berginis impressed me with his good accents and impressions when we read the Boy In Striped Pyjamas.

Declan: Paul has impressed me by learning all of his words in Aladdin in the songs and he’s getting really good at it.

Callum: Nathan has impressed me because he got a great score in Big Maths.

Ellie: My table impressed me because we got table of the week.

Lauren K: Mrs Innes has impressed me with all of the plays and dramas she is helping us with and she is making them all great.

Adam: My table has impressed me because we improved from last to second place.

Finlay: Mr Berginis impressed me with his Christmas jumper.

Antonia: Ellie has impressed me with her determination in maths because she kept going with her division even when she found it hard.

Mr Berginis: I’m impressed with how much the class are enjoying The Boy In Striped Pyjamas and how they are able to talk about the issues in the book and how they relate to the Holocaust.

p7m

P7M have had a very interesting week.

We started off by having our first visit to Bathgate Academy. Some of the class said they were a little nervous beforehand and some were excited. We got picked up by a mini bus. In a classroom we met some of the S6 prefects and they helped us with a treasure hunt where we had to find different departments around the school. Afterwards we had the opportunity to ask some questions. We asked:
What are the one way systems? There is a one way system at Bathgate Academy and the prefects showed us where they are.
Can you use pen or pencils at Bathgate Academy? Some classes such as maths would encourage you to use a pencil and others might encourage you to use a pen so you would be best to bring both.
What are the school uniforms? Black trousers or skirt, white shirt and black cardigan or blazer and black shoes.
Afterwards we met one of the science teachers. He taught a lesson on forces. The class loved the experiments.

This week we also got a sneak peak of the p1 nativity. We were very proud of our buddies!

Next week we are looking forward to helping out in our care class parties and also our own party!

P3b Update

This week we had a Winter/Christmas themed shared start. Some Mums, dads and grannies came along to help us with our activities.
Here are some of our thoughts of the morning:
Grace- ‘My favourite activity was designing a Christmas jumper.’
Ben- ‘I liked the Christmas jumper task because I like colouring in.’

Evie- ‘I liked making the snow man in the snow globe. We used card and paint for this. ‘
Millie- ‘We dipped our fingers into white paint to make snow.’
Olivia- ‘We coloured in an advent calendar. ‘
Eva- ‘My favourite thing was the adding dice game.’
James- ‘I liked the snow man task where we made them with shredded paper’.

We are really enjoying our forces topic. This week we explored friction. Friction makes things hot. It also slows thing down and makes them stop. The rougher the surface the more friction produced. Next week we are going to carry out some friction experiments.

Have a nice weekend,

Last Week’s Blog

On Monday afternoon, Mrs Drummond came to our class to do some drumming with us. We learned the names of different drums and other percussion instruments. We also learned that the drums we played were made from goat’s skin. We completed different activities to keep a beat. We tapped the syllables in our names and did a polyrhythm. (This means we were playing two different beats at the same time.) We really enjoyed it!

On Wednesday, Mr Berginis revised symmetry with us. Symmetry is when an image is the same at both sides. We also learned about the line of symmetry. This is the imaginary line where you could fold the image and have both halves match exactly. We used reflectors to find the line of symmetry and used ipads to draw the other half of a picture.

Letters to Santa

We have had an extremely busy week in Primary 1w! We have had lots of visitors to our class and we were lucky to have Miss Henderson visit us during our writing lesson.

We wrote our letters to Santa Claus. We had to:
-introduce ourselves
-say 3 things that we would like for Christmas
-sound out our letters and ‘have a go’ at writing ourselves

Some of the things we have asked for from Santa are:
-an iPad (Lucas and Donna)
-Planet of the Zombie warfight game (Lewis)
-Hello Kitty (Anna)
-a train set (Arran)
-a robot pink dog (Jodie)
-Monster High Dolls (Lily)
-a guitar (Erin)

We are looking forward to maybe hearing back from Santa Claus in response to our letter!!

*Well done to our Class Dojo winners of the week – Jodie, Farrah and Katie :-)*

Cass 3 go step back in time!

This week Class 3 were researching rationing during World War 2. We enjoyed finding out why foods were rationed, what foods were rationed and how this affected people’s lives and shopping. We had lots of fun recreating rationing by turning the sensory room into a ration shop.
Josh: It was good fun. I got to weigh out sweets. You were only allowed 2 ounces of sweets a week during the war. We made ration books.
Cary: Rationing was about sharing food out to make it fair for everyone. There was a set amount for each person. You had to use tokens from a ration book to but certain foods. I enjoyed tasting some of the foods afterwards.
Caitlin: This week we also wrote diary extracts about how we would feel when foods were rationed. I wrote about not being happy because there was not a lot of food to eat. There was not a lot of food because the Germans were bombing the ships bringing food into Britain.
Geordie: I really enjoyed trying the foods in the ration shop. I learnt that people were encouraged to grow as much as they could in their own gardens. I enjoyed being the shop keeper because I got to weigh the foods and take the coupons from the ration books.
Callum: I learnt that you had to use coupons because food was short. The ham and sweets were tasty. There were strict rules about how much foods you were allowed each week.
Nathan: I liked trying the biscuits. You didn’t get a lot of biscuits. They were rationed. This would not have been good. I love biscuits!

Christianity

Class 2 have been learning about Christianity. This week we have been learning about Christian worship. We have been learning about the different things that you can find inside and outside of the church building.

‘You can pray to God at church. You can also pray in a graveyard or in your bedroom or lots of other places but I think Church is the best place to pray.’ Dylan

‘A church is a building where Christians come to pray. Some are big and some are small’. Liam

We turned our sensory room into a church and enjoyed learning more about church, prayer and how to behave appropriately in church.

Jamie was able to make comparisons between churches and mosques.
‘In a mosque you have to take off your shoes but in church you don’t have to take off your shoes. On the top of a mosque you sometimes see a crest and on top of a church tower you sometimes see a cross.’ Jamie

We enjoyed learning about stained glass windows. Some churches have plain windows whilst others have colourful stained glass windows which tell stories from the Bible. The boys in class 2 made beautiful stained glass windows.

‘I made a colourful stained glass window’. Liam

Cameron and Cody enjoyed learning why some clocks on church towers are blue and would like to find out if you know why this is. Please put your answers in the comment section below.

P4m 24.11.14

P4m have had a great time in outdoor P.E practicing our scoring skills in handball games.

We have been using lots of different strategies to practice our 3 times table this week.  The most popular ones were playing snakes an ladder and pairs.

We have also been using different strategies to practice our spelling words- we have been learning that splitting a word up into its syllables helps us to remember how to spell it.

Continuing our Broon’s aroond Scotland topic, we have been researching and building various Scottish landmarks out of different materials. When these are finished they will be displayed with our map of Scotland.

We all wrote very exciting and imaginative middle sections of our Magic Door stories. We can’t wait to finish them next week! Well done to our star writers who will get a copy of their work home with them.

P5m Totally Rock!

This week we have been learning about the three different types of rock using – you guessed it – chocolate!

The layers of our Caramel Wafer reminded us of sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks are formed from sediments that have settled at the bottom of a lake, sea or ocean, and have been compressed over millions of years. The sediment comes from eroded rocks carried there by rivers or ice, and from the skeletons of sea creatures.

The holes inside our Crunchie reminded us of the gas bubbles that form when lava cools quickly, creating igneous rock.

We held a Curly Wurly in our hand as we learned about the different types of rock. The heat and pressure totally changed the shape of our chocolate. Metamorphic rocks are created by the heat and pressure from tectonic plates sliding together.

We’ve learned so much during our Chocolate Geology lessons and cleaning up after them is always so much fun!

Class 1 Blog

This week in the sensory room it was set up like a dentist.

Joe – I was pretending to be a dentist. I had a drink of water. It is a good drink for your teeth.

Jayden – Playing games at the dentist in sensory room. I was reading book in the waiting area.

In topic we asked each other “What is your favourite sweet?”. We collected all the results and will display them next week in a bar chart.

Gabriel – My favourite sweet is fudge.

David – We choosing our favourite sweets. In the sweet shop as a friend “what’s your favourite sweet?” I’ve got a white sweet, and a blue one, and a yellow one. My favourite sweet is lollipops.

Gabriel’s favourite activity this week was maths where we learning about volume.

Gabriel – I was pouring the yellow water in maths because we were measuring. I didn’t spill the water.

Finally we have been getting ready for the Christmas Fayre by making toys to sell. We hope you come along and enjoy what we have produced.

Yolie – I made a windmill with a snowman on it. It looks like Frozen.

Lewis – My windmill has santa. We made posters. It will cost you 50p.

P4g

Another busy week.

This week we started our new topic ‘Broons Aroond Scotland’ and have looked at maps and where Bathgate is in Scotland. We are also learning about electricity and how electrons flow around a circuit.
In maths we have been looking at grid references and coordinates and have played lots of games with this including a giant connect four game on the floor.
We made lots of baubles, stars and snowmen to sell for the Christmas Fayre -they look great!
Enjoy your weekend!

A huge thank you to Cole, Emma and Lucie, our helpers at the Christmas Fayre stall!

P3e

This week have been busy scientists. We now have a labratory in the classroom where we can experiment with magnets and create potions. We have been finding out about gravity and conducting some experiments. We know that we need to conduct a fair test and only change one thing in an experiment. We have created our own parachutes and are testing them to see which one will fall to the ground first. The parachutes are the same but we are changing the weight attached to each parachute. We will let you know the results.

We have been busy practising our assembly this week. We look forward to performing our assembly next Friday.

Scientists in Primary 3/2

This week in class we have been experimenting just like George !

However we predicted what would happen to the water ,oil and washing up liquid !

Unlike George who just kept on adding new ingredients to his medicine !

What fun being Scientists……

This week our story writing was all about Our Science Lab….We wrote all about the bunsen burner, specimens and test tubes and wearing protective glasses and a white lab coat… We even had a friend with us to help us try out the experiment…. I wonder who ll be this week’s Star Writers….

Reminder it is our class Shared Start on Wednesday 3rd December..Please join us if you can 🙂

Our week in p7b

Our learning

Lauren U: We made Christmas tree decorations for the Christmas Fayre. We made two different types of stars, Christmas trees and stockings.

Isla: On Monday we went to Bathgate Academy and did a treasure hunt. We had to go to four different parts of the school and find the answers to different questions. It was to help us learn our way around the academy.

Taylor: On Monday at the academy at break time we sat in a circle and ate our snacks and discussed our worries with Mrs Burns the deputy head teacher and some of the sixth year prefects.

Flyn: At the high school we did a science lesson where we learned about forces. We used a Vandegraff generator to show static which made your hair stand up.

Harry: At the science lesson we had to rub a rod with a cloth and then put it next to water and the water bent because of the electrostatic force.

Chloe: We also learned about magnetic forces by using magnets and iron filings we saw the different ways the iron filings moved because of the magnets.

Paul: We were learning this week about what it was like to be an evacuee during World War 2. We went through lots of different emotions and each table had different experiences for example some children were evacuated straight away to the countryside while some stayed in the cities.

Lauren C: This week in PE I had fun doing the muscular endurance activities. We did press-ups and crunches and things like that. We did them to help build up our muscles.

Finlay: I liked maths because we got to learn more about division. If you know your times tables it makes it a lot easier.

Who has impressed?

Declan: Jay has impressed me because he got all of his answers correct in his division work.

Finlay: Callum, Antonia and Lauren K impressed me by getting the new highest scores on Big Maths Beat That.

Antonia: Flyn has impressed me because in PE he tried his hardest and kept going even when he was tempted to stop.

Ellie: Olivia has impressed me this week because she done really well in PE and kept going.

Lauren C: Olivia and Emily impressed me by working their hardest to try and move up the class behaviour steps.

Flyn: Antonia has impressed me because she done really well in PE and didn’t give up.

Isla: My PE Castles team has impressed me because we have improved and are in the lead at the moment.

Adam: Kieran impressed me with his D-Day letter and I could tell he put a lot of effort into it.

Jay: I am impressed with Declan because he got a new high score on the Wall of Fame for the 11x table.

Paul: The whole class has impressed me with the propaganda posters we created which are on display in the class.

Kai: Kyra has impressed me with how much she wrote in her report about the academy visit.

Kendal: I’m impressed by Emily this week because she got a new high score on the Wall of Fame.

Mr Berginis: I was impressed by how well behaved the class was when we visited the academy on Monday for our science lesson.
