This week we learned about fables. A fable is short story containing a moral (A story with a lesson). First of all, we watched a video of the fable ‘The Lion and the Mouse’. The moral in this story is don’t judge a book by it’s cover. We also listened to the story ‘The Boy who Cried Wolf’ where we learned that honesty is the best policy.
In writing, we worked hard to create our own fables. We had to include; a short story with a moral, a good character and a foolish character, a setting, a problem and a solution.
Next week we are going to re-draft our story then read it to our buddies.
In art we examined the work of Quentin Blake-the illustrator of Roald Dahl books. We noticed that Quentin Blake likes to draw with lines using ink and then uses water colour to bring his illustrations to life. He does this very quickly.
We had a go at creating our own images using Quentin’s style. We were very pleased with the results and our work will look amazing on display.

P7 Sleepover

Last night we had a sleepover at school.

When we arrived we had a chat, chose our sleeping spots and played outside. After that, some of us chose to watch a movie while others played the Wii or coloured in.

Mr Berginis made up a quiz. We worked in teams of four to try to answer the questions. The teachers won 🙂

At 9:00 chips arrived from Gerry’s. We ate these in the dinner hall- they went down a treat!

We chose to watch Monster House. After the film, some of us drifted off to sleep while others had a long, long chat!

Here are some of our highlights:

Sky Studios

Yesterday we went a school trip to Sky Academy in Livingston.

When we arrived the split into four teams and each of us had a different role. The roles included; reporter, editor, script writer, camera operator, producer, director, eye-witness and expert.

These roles require different skills such as; team work, creativity, hard work, communication, time management and problem solving.

We made a news report about cyber bullying. We learned facts about this topic and then split the news report into four sections. Team 1 introduced the report, team 2 reported within a ‘school’, team 3 were eye-witnesses and team 4 interviewed someone on the issue.

Here are our favourite parts of the day.

‘Watching the report back.’ – Liam

‘Watching programmes in the cinema room in the comfy seats.’- Travis

‘Getting to dress up.’- Leon

We got to take a copy of the report home to show our parents. Overall, we had a great experience!

P7b

We have been learning so much this week in P7.

In health & wellbeing we learned facts about the heart. Here is some of our learning- there are two sides (chambers) of the heart, one with rich (oxygenated) blood the other side has poor (deoxygenated) blood. The arteries carry oxygenated blood around the body whilst veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart. Veins are not actually blue!
We also explored the function of the lungs and wrote an explanation text on this subject.
In drama we are learning slapstick and are really enjoying it!

P7a and P7b

Last week P7a and P7b came into school to find out that their had been a robbery. All of the school money has been stolen from the safe. We went down to investigate the crime scene and collected the evidence. We found fingerprints, a hair and fabric sample, a hand written note, footprints and money scattered everywhere. The police questioned six suspects who work in the school. It is now our job to examine the evidence to work out who committed this crime.

The six suspects are:

Mr Welsh

Mrs Hay

Mrs McVay

Mrs Gray

Mrs White

Mr Jeffries

All the suspects could not provide an alibi and have a motive to steal the money. Over the next weeks we will carry out experiments before bringing in our last two suspects for questioning.

As we are learning to be forensic scientists we are also learning about the human body and how it works.

We will let you know about any updates on the case!

Here are some of our thoughts and on the panto:

‘My character was Bella-an ugly stepsister. She ended up getting married to the prince because the fairy godmother put a spell on Cinderella’s slipper and it fit Bella perfectly. I enjoyed dressing up and wearing make-up.’- Ross

‘I was the prince and I just wanted a pretty girl with loads of money. I thought it was quite funny that I ended up marrying Ross who played Bella!’ – Josh

‘I was Cinderella. I really liked over exaggerating all the lines. I liked signing the duet with Ray.’ – Emma B

This week we had the first ever meeting of the Pod Squad. We meet every afternoon in the Pod. We are Jay, Greig, Paige, Freya, Jamie, Dyllan, Mrs Mallin and Mr Berginis.

This week we have focused on decorating the Pod (look at our cool Pod sign above) and getting to know each other.

Paige: “The Pod is the best place to be because you get more help and support and it helps you learn more stuff.”

Greig: “It helps with your learning because there’s not as many people to distract you.”

Freya: “The Pod is better for learning because there is less distraction and I can concentrate more.”

Jay: “It helps me to learn because there are no distractions and it is more fun.”

Mrs Mallin: “This week has been good fun getting to know the rest of the Pod Squad.”

Mr Berginis: “I have really enjoyed this week because we have started learning about how to work together as a team and we have had some successes already.”

Jamie and Dyllan are absent today but we look forward to them sharing their thoughts in next weeks blog post.

We also worked together to create our Pod Charter. This will help us identify the actions we need to do to make sure we all get our rights. Here it is below.

Here is some of our learning from this week:

• In PE this week we have been learning the Dashing White Sargent and Strip the Willow for our Burns Supper next Monday.
• We have also been exploring Scots language and wrote a Cinderella play script in Scots! (Miss Bollen was very impressed with our work!)
• This week in drama we continued practicing our Cinderella panto and performed it in front of Primary 1.
• In maths we were learned to identify different types angles and were reminded how to measure and draw angles using a protractor.

We are looking forward to our Burn’s Supper and ceilidh next week.

We all had a great holiday and have been working really hard since we came back to school.

In maths we have been learning about using doubles and near doubles to help us add and multiply mentally. The Hexagons and Octagons have been learning how to multiply 2 digit numbers. They have been learning to use different strategies including partitioning and doubling and halving. The pentagons have been learning strategies to help them to divide mentally.

We have been learning about Scots language and practised a poem to perform in front of the class. We studied a poem called A Dug, A Dug and translated it into English. We also wrote our own Oor Wullie comic in Scots.

In our WW2 topic we have been learning about the role of women during WW2. We learned that they made a huge contribution to the war effort by working on farms, in factories and in the forces. We looked at propoganda posters and how they were used to influence people during the war. A lot of posters were used to enroll women into the war effort and portrayed women as strong and independent. Finally, we looked at sources of information. We are able to identify primary and secondary sources of information. Primary sources are sources of information which are gathered at the time, for example, an eye witness account or a photograph. A secondary source of information is created by someone who did not experience it first hand, for example, a documentary based on the holocaust.

We had a nice end to the week as we got to watch a pantomime performed by pupils from Bathgate Academy. It was really good fun and gave us some great tips for our pantomime performance.

See you next week!

P7b

This week we had a focus on Scots language. We explored the Oor Wullie website and completed an activity to translate the Scots words into English. We also created comic strips using Scots language using the characters from Oor Wullie. We also learned poems for homework and some of us performed them in front of the rest of the class. Ross and Mhairi will read Social Dancing and Leon will read Slaister to Mr Welsh and the head boy and girl on Monday.

Yesterday we watched a panto performed by S5 and S6 pupils from Bathgate Academy. The panto was a twist of the traditional tale ‘Jack and the Beanstalk.’ It gave us ideas for our own Cinders panto which we will perform in three weeks’ time.

Today we participated in the Big Balbardie Blether. During this we discussed the health and wellbeing indicators and how these are met in school. We also discussed circle time and how this can link with the indicators to make us feel happy, healthy and safe.

P7a

This week we all have been very excited as have had a new pupil join in our class. We have enjoyed getting to know Derri this week and we hope she has enjoyed her first week in P7a.

We have been learning about the Blitz and the effect this had on people’s lives. Everyone was issued with a gas mask and some people had an Anderson shelter in their garden where they could go to be protected from falling pieces of glass and rubble. Many children were evacuated from London during the Blitz and went to live in the countryside. Many children did not know who they were going to live with and often had to work on farms before and after school. We imagined we had been evacuated and sent away from our families. We wrote a letter to our parents telling them about our journey to the countryside, the family we had to live with and life at our new homes.

In maths this week we have been learning how to plot co-ordinates on a graph with four co-ordinates. We found this quite difficult at first but will keep pracitising. The pentagons, hexagons and octagons have been developing their knowledge of multiplication. The pentagons can multiply up to four digit numbers using mental strategies and a standard written method. The Hexagons and Octagons have been learning to multiply a 2 digit number. We will keep developing out mental multiplication strategies.

Hello from P7b

This week for our context for learning, we have been learning about the blitz and evacuees. The blitz is when Germany bombed all the main cites in Britain. It was called the blitz because ‘blitz’ means light in German and the bombs caused a lot of light.

In writing we pretended we were evacuees and had just got sent away to a new family. We had to make up a countryside address to write a letter to family about what we have been doing and about our new house and school etc. We all wrote really good stories.

This week a lot of us have made it in the golden club which is really exciting because the event is next Thursday!
