First week back

In our first week back P7b has been working hard and has some news we would like to share with you.

In P7 we have additional responsibilities throughout the school.  For example, we are buddies to the new P1 pupils.  This is a big responsibility as we have to look after them and show them school procedures.  We have been collecting them before break each day and playing with them in the playground.

We have been given a care class to attend each morning and to assist in during wet breaks and lunches.  Some care class jobs include; helping the teacher set up for the day by cleaning the board, setting up paints, sharpening pencils, handing out jotters and supervising younger pupils. In addition, some people are Office P.As, tuckshop monitors and whiteboard monitors.

‘I really enjoyed meeting our new art teacher.  I enjoyed art because you don’t need to be good at art to do the task well.’- Jack

‘I have enjoyed this week so far and I am excited to see what the new school year brings.’- Fiona

‘I’m looking forward to Oban and the sleepover.’ -Luca

‘I really enjoyed the maths assessment because it’s getting back into the swing of things.’- Archie

P7b

We have had a good couple of weeks in p7B.

Last week we had a lady come on Tuesday and Thursday to tell us about tobacco and the dangers of it. On Thursday she brought a friend in and her name was Smokey Sue. She was a doll and showed us how smoking affects your lungs and body.  One cigarette turned her lungs yellow and it looked disgusting!

Yesterday we watched the schools senior choir perform their interpretation of the Jungle Book.

“It was really exciting to watch (because we got out of class and didn’t have to do work!”~RyrieJ

During the week we were working on our lunar theme parks. This taught us about budget and profit and loss.  The class really enjoyed designing our own theme park.  We had a budget of £500,000 pounds to spend on our parks.  This was to buy things including major rides, minor rides, cafes, shops, path ways & toilets. We then had to work out our outgoing and incoming costs to work out our total profit.  We really enjoyed this task!

We also learned about the reasons why animals are endangered and wrote persuasive letters to the government to build more conservation areas.  We then designed our own conservation parks.   We had to consider each animals’’ needs including their habitat, diet and size.  We designed our parks to scale and calculated the area and perimeter of each animal’s enclosure.

We are looking forward to our last week at Balbardie next week!

P7a

We have had a great week! We really enjoyed Sports Day on Wednesday. Everyone tried really hard at all the events and had great fun in the sun! Well done to Ella, Olivia and Geo for winning medals.

The Decahedrons have been learning about BODMAS and expressing equations this week. We have found it a bit confusing at first but are making good progress! The Hexagons and Pentagons have been learning to add and subtract decimals. They have worked really hard and are now ready to multiply and divide decimal fractions.

We had a circle time this week to discuss our feelings about transition. There are a mixture of emotions in the class. Some people are excited and some people are quite nervous. Most of us are going to Bathgate Academy next week and we hope we will have a brilliant time. We will let you know how we got on during our transition visits. Wish us luck.

Hopefully we see lots of people at the procession tomorrow. Have a great long weekend.

Hello from P7b

This Wednesday we had our sports day.  We were lucky with the weather as the sun was shining.  Here are some of our highlights:

‘I won two medals- one for the sprint and the other for overall boy.  I ran so fast that I was sick at the end!’- James

‘Oliver in the sack race.’- Viggo (He was disadvantaged due to his height!)

‘I won the potato and spoon race.’- Ryan

‘Me and Aidan tripping over each other in the sack race.’- David

‘Watching my mum race in the parent race.’- Meadow

‘Watching Alan Maybury burn everyone in the parent race!’ – Aaron

‘Coming second in both sprints and sack race and doing a front flip in the middle of the sack race.’- Jack

‘Watching Hardy win the relay.’- Ryrie

Well done to everyone for working hard and showing good sportsmanship.

In art this week we looked at the illustrator Quentin Blake.  He is best known as the illustrator for Roald Dahl books and more recently,David Walliams.  He uses lines to create his characters then adds colour using water colour paints.  We recreated some of Quentin Blake’s famous characters including; Matilda, Charlie and Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach and The Twits.

Next week we are looking forward to our transition week to the academy!

Have a nice holiday weekend,

Miss Bollen & P7b

Oban day 4.

Tired this morning we all ate breakfast chatting quietly! That was following a very late night after swimming and chips…

Today some of us did coasteering, orienteering, canoeing and bushcraft(they are away all day!) or climbing.

Weather today is quite windy so the water looks choppy ! It is also a bit sunny too which is nice….

Lunch time for us today ranges from cheese, jam, tuna or ham sandwiches. We also have an apple a chocolate biscuit and a bottle of water. We can choose from about 4 flavours of crisps.

activities will commence again at 2pm !

Update from the Canadian unicorns

Yesterday we went canoeing and shelter building. Some of our highlights include:

*working in teams in the canoes

*helping and encouraging each other to build our shelter

*drinking hot chocolate and eating lunch in our shelters

*learning to create a fire with strikers and cotton wool.  We nowknow that fire needs fuel, oxygen and heat to ignite.

Today we went coasteering and rock climbing at Ganavan beach.   We enjoyed walking and jumping into the freezing cold water with other people and conquering fears by climbing rocks.

Tonight we are looking forward to a quiz, swimming and a chippy!

We had a great day.

Day 2: Morning News from MIss Holwill’s Group

So today in Oban we went Gorge walking it got cold (Liam turned into a motor bike as he was chattering so much).  It was fun, it was good.  Gorge walking is walking up a river using the stones to climb over, slide down, jump off.  We slipped so much and David was floating away at one point. Callum turned into several differnt animals and demostrated his wide range of accents to get us through it.  Viggo started steaming when he got back on the bus.  Daniel was the cheif pool finder.  Isla sang songs to entertain everyone and managed to find lots of ways to make Louise laugh.  Lucy loved it…sliding 🙂

Madeleine got cold but kept with us and Casey kept Miss Holwill safe.

Day 1: Afternoon Miss Holwill’s group news

This afternoon we went Coasteering.  First of all it was fun and enjoyable.  Basically you walk along the coastline, on the rocks in the sea, to get to a point and then you jump into the sea.  As a warm up we walked to an island.  At one point we were walking really close to the edge and the sea kept splashing up on us as it was bouncing of the rocks.  The jump at the end was very deep….a top tip don’t trust the barnicles.  It was cold but Miss Holwill heard lots of this is the best activity every and its amazing.

After dinner we had the Stramash Great Egg Challenge.  It consisted of lots of fun team races and challenges.  At the end we were all given scores which we exchanged for materials to create a hard protective case for an egg and we named it ‘Timmy the Talking Tube and the Holy Pine Cone’.  We then put them through a series of challenges, Timmy got to the second challenge where unfortunatly he met his fate with a flag pole.  RIP Timmy.

HomeSquad

The HomeSquad consists of the P7 pupils who are in school this week and we thought it would be fun to update you on their exciting experiences.  Yesterday, we went to Beecraigs and took part in orienteering.  There was great team work, problem solving, getting wet in the snow and then enjoying the sun!  The children were great and made our school proud.

Reiss – ‘I enjoyed making the bridge across the bank of the river – we worked in a team and solved problems.’

Kiera – ‘I liked the open air.’

Willliam – ‘I enjoyed making the stretcher, like an ambulance uses.’

Louisa – ‘I enjoyed all of it!’

Brooke – ‘I enjoyed making the stretcher and the bridge from wood.’

Ramsay – ‘I liked when we had to help people cross the river from the other side, and making the stretcher.’

Zoe – ‘I liked how I just got over the bridge instead of being nervous about crossing!’

Connor – ‘I liked building the bridge using team work.’

Ben – ‘All of it was fun!’

Day 2: Morning News from Miss Holwill’s Group

Hello from Oban!!!!!!

In our group today we climbed up a large mountain of rocks and used our fabulous team, The Awkward Fam, spirit!!!

Isla managed to fall and swing like the monkey she is and Louise and Madeleine made it to the top!

Viggo embraced his inner mountain goat while Liam shot to the top and Callum used his Can Do attitude.

Casey and Lucy climbed and helped each other find hand and foot holes.

Daniel climbed numerous times to the top and David was pushing himself to do his best

The boys found a nice Mountain throne to sit on.

Thank you weather gods for blessing us with sun, we shall write again soon xx

Day 1 at Oban -P7s

We had a good and safe journey to Oban we had a  stop at the green welly stop. When we arrivied in Oban we had a meeting with the staff they explained what we were going to do.  Once we had settled into our rooms the staff took us for a walk around the area.  As a warm up we took part in team challenges.  We were trying to untangle ourselves after we had all joined hands randomly.  Dinner was brillant!  After we went climbing up hills, dodged cows, saw Mull and then rolled/skidded/fell/laughed and walked down.  Only a few scratches.  Once we arrived back we had a chance to get used to our rooms, had a little supper and then went to bed.  We can’t believe how much we have done already..looking forward to today’s activities – anyone fancy gorge walking?

First week back in P7b

It’s been a short but busy week in p7 this is how it went!

This week in writing we had fun reflecting on our learning this year and writing our own reports.  This gave the teacher an idea of our point of view on our strengths, next steps, behaviour and approach to learning.  We wrote these in our transition jotters to pass them onto the teachers at Bathgate Academy.

‘I enjoyed writing it in the 3rd person. It made me feel like a teacher.’- David

In art we drew pictures of Scottish landscapes. Our success criteria was to include light/shadow and texture to make our pictures more advance. These turned out well and are displayed in our class.

‘I enjoyed choosing what landscape to do.’ –Ryan

For the past few weeks, we have been working in groups to create a slaptick.

Slapstick is pretend hitting in a drama scene.  Laurel and Hardy are famous slapstick actors. Yesterday in drama we performed our group slapsticks to our class. All of them were very entertaining!

I enjoyed making my own story line  -Jamie

This week we have been very excited as some of us are going to Oban on Monday. This will be a great experience for us. Some of the great things we will be getting up to are; gorge walking, canoeing, swimming, and to finish off, a beach bonfire!

‘I can’t wait till Monday!’ Meadow

Have a nice weekend,

Article 28- the right to an education

Completed by Aidan and Meadow

P7b

This week in P7b we have been very busy.  We read a few chapters of The Boy in Striped Pyjamas then completed follow up tasks.  In one activity each group was issued with a description of a character in the book. E.g. team bones was given a piece of text on father.  We had to read the description of the character then draw how we imaged them to look like.   This is called visualisation and this skill helps to deepen our understanding.

Lucy : I enjoyed drawing father using the description in the book !

In art we create a picture based on the front cover of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas; It had to include stripes, perspective, silhouettes and cold colours. You could use any materials.

Here are some examples…

In maths we learned about area. For squares and rectangles you timed the breadth times length. E.g. 7m x 8m               = 56m2

But for triangles you times the  length by the breadth then half it.  E.g. 5 CM x  9 CM= 45cm/2= 22.5cm2

We also learned about the area compound shapes.  This is where you look for shapes, work out the area of both shapes then add them together.

Have a lovely Easter break everyone!
