Another busy week in and out of class!

On Saturday it was the Christmas Fayre and we had lots of fun there. The craft items that we made, pom poms, bracelets and reindeer cards, all sold out!

We have been practising our songs for the church service – they are so tricky! We are getting better though!

We have started our new topic – The Broons aroond Scotland. It has been really interesting looking at maps and how they can show different types of information.

We have also been looking at plays and how they are written. We practised in our groups and then performed a scene from the play for everyone in the class. We gave positive comments and then gave suggestions on how to improve their performance for next time. It was great fun!

See you next week.

Dragons Den! By P4g

Last week Mr Welsh and Mrs Spence visited our class as Dragons for our Dragons Den competition! We were challenged to make a new invention to pitch to them for their investment. The inventions included a ‘shoodie’ (t-shirt and a hoodie combined), fly zapper 3000, doganator to spray away dog poo and lots more. Here is what we thought:

– It was fun! Geo

– It was rather scary pitching to the Head Teacher. Isla

– The inventions were funny and clever. Kiera B

– I would buy the Party popper pooper scooper. Jessie

– I would like to buy the fly zapper 3000. Ramsay

We also made £110 on our P4 Christmas Enterprise stall at the Christmas Fayre! Thank you to everyone who bought something.

This week we have been enjoying practising the songs for the Christmas Church Service, learning how to solve problems using the strategy ‘Produce a List’ and learning how to read scripts including stage directions (some of us read them out by accident!)

Only 11 school days left!

P4b

This has been a challenging but fun week in P4b.

In maths we were learning about capacity; how much something can hold. We had great fun measuring out and working out if different containers held about a litre, less than a litre or more than a liitre. We did not spill any water!

We have started looking at how plays are structured and used highlighters to pick out different parts of a play.

In French we held a carousel and every body spoke French! We had to include saying hello/goodbye, our name and asking somebody else their name and also to ask someone how they were and say how we were feeling. It was great fun.

Apart from this we had a big challenge – we made pom poms for the Fayre. Mrs Ghafoor thought we would be finished in 20 minutes but it was far trickier and actually took a lot longer!  We have also made bracelets and cards but they were so good, most of us have already bought our own items. We do have a selection of fab items left so come along tomorrow to buy them!

The Fayre will be on from 10am – 12pm. See you there!

Our Rocket is called Blazing Blooms. We use it to help us understand what we are reading.

P4b

Another busy week in P4b.

This week we looked at the advertising aspects of chocolate. We made slogans for our chocolate bars and then wrote adverts for them. We had to include what they looked like, smelt like and tasted like. (Tasted amazing, we know that!) Mrs Ghafoor was very impressed with the slogans that we came up with. We also made up questions from information given to us about chocolate. We had great fun creating and answering the questions in our groups and getting points for our groups. We have a quiz wall outside the classroom if you would like to answer some of the questions that we created. (Don’t worry, information is there also!)

We have been looking at the Commonwealth Games and have started designing posters for this. We also enjoyed our visit to the library. We now have our Blazing Blooms rocket to help us with our leaning and questioning. We voted for the best name, although Mrs. Ghafoor was ready to cheat if we didn’t vote for her favourite name for the rocket! Luckily our votes matched and Mrs. Ghafoor didn’t have to resort to cheating.

Enjoy your weekend.

Thank you for your votes! As you can see it was a tricky decision, however the winning entry was the ‘Crispy Crunch Bite’, as decided by the Board of Directors.

Come and see all the wrappers we designed!

Today we made the chocolate bars and were allowed to modify the ingredients slightly. We worked cooperatively as teams and made the decisions together. The chocolate bars look delicious!

We have also been learning about different types of questions and how to use them effectively. We can now identify three types of questions. They are simple questions, true/false questions and multiple choice questions.

Enjoy your week.

We had lots of Hallowe’en fun! We worked cooperatively in trios to design and carve Hallowe’en pumpkins. Some had one eye, some had three eyes and lots had scary cracks and scars! The inside of the pumpkin was squidgy and slimy! We also enjoyed Hallowe’en arts, crafts and puzzles.

Last week was what we had all been waiting for…animation week! We worked very excitedly to make our animations. Some of us brought in figures and backgrounds from home and some of us made our characters out of plasticiene. We learned to move our characters slightly and take a photo each time to blend it all together into a movie. It is called stop motion. We also explored with the ‘Lego Movie’ app to add special effects and music. We loved your idea Mrs Spence of having a screening to watch each other’s animation, especially with popcorn! We have dropping hints to Miss Goff haha!

P4b

This week we have been busy with our invention of chocolate topic.

We looked at maths problems and tried to work out different combinations that we could get using three ingredients.  We also worked out how much it would cost to buy the different combinations of ingredients!

We investigated how to make a Cherry Choo  Chocolate Bar, discussed the process of making the bar and then had to teach the ‘Idiot Alien’ how to make the chocolate bar. The problem was that the Alien would only do exactly what you told him to. It was very tricky to make sure no steps were missed out and the Alien understood how to make the chocolate bar.

We now have an overall winner of the chocolate bar wrapper design. Why you don’t you vote and tell us which wrapper you like?

Coco Crisp Bar
Choco Bite
Crispy Crunch
Chocolate Crunch Bite
Orange Crispy Bite

We also had great fun when Callum came to give us a taster session on Karate. He showed us how to count in Japanese as well as some basic moves.

Enjoy your weekend!

Money Fun! P4g

This week we for story writing we had free choice and got to make up our own story. It was fun having the freedom to choose our own titles. We had the choice of personal, imaginative and functional writing.

On Thursday we did problem solving related to money week. In our trios we had to find at least 10 ways of making up money totals e.g. 10 ways to make up 67p using 1p, 2p, 5p, 10, 20p and 50p coins. It was easy at first but hard to find the 8th, 9th and 10th way as we were running out of options!

We went to judo and had lots of fun. The instructor was really funny! Ramsay brought in his Judo medals to share as he goes to the same judo club. Well done Ramsay!

On Wednesday at art time we made clay fish. We learned to sculpt and imprint patterns. Next week we are looking forward to painting them once they have set.

At gym this week we learnt more about handball in preparation for the handball festival next Wednesday. It was really, really fun!

Lastly, we were testing lots of different solids’s solubility in science this week. Solubility means it dissolves and disappears in water. We learned that stirring and using hot water speeds up this process. We learned a new word; hypothesis, it means tohave a guess/predict. What a Busy Week in P4g!

This week we picked the potatoes we planted last year for our farming topic. We then learned how to peel potatoes and chop them. Together we made potato and leek soup with a special help from Mrs Jamieson. Thank you Mrs Jamieson! It was yummy!

We painted Autumn pictures using autumn colours…red, orange, green, brown and yellow. We included autumn animals and fallen leaves.

In maths we did problem solving in our problem solving trios. We used the strategy ‘draw a picture’ to solve the problem. This involved colouring flags in different ways using only four colours. We had to make sure no two flags matched. It was tricky at first however once we worked out a pattern it became easier.

During topic, we were learning about the invention of the aeroplane by the Wright Brothers. We learned that they faced three problems when inventing: flight, control and power. We were challenged to make paper airplanes looking at the structures of our planes e.g. body, wings, tail and folding. It was a competition to see whose one went the furthest, and Ben won! His was amazing!

Lastly, we had to invent our own food or drink and think of a catchy name and slogan for it. We made an advertising poster to advertise it. It made us feel pretty hungry afterwards!

For spelling we have been doing telephone spelling and we challenged each other by trying to decode each others spelling words! We enjoyed it!

For story writing we did Writer’s Craft where we had to create our own chapter of George’s Marvellous Medicine. We were challenged to write an alternative plot of what happened to Grandma when she ate George’s Medicine! It was very fun!

We learned how to use the new netbooks to research famous inventors.  We learned that John logie baird invented the television for home entertainment and Alexander Flemming invented Penicillin which is an antibiotic that fights off infections.

The funniest week ever in P4g :-)

This week in maths we have been learning about division and times tables. We learned that multiplication and division are linked by rearranging the three numbers around.

In story writing we have been learning about punctuation. This included full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, speech marks, commas and new one we learned was ellipsis. We used ellipsis in our writing to create suspense and make our stories exciting. We had to write an imaginative story about ‘The Invention’ to link in with our class novel ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’. Some inventions we invented was time machines, food that made people shrink and a multi-gadget rocket… (ellipsis haha!)

We also would like to thank Mrs Jamieson for coming into our class with her Knex boxes and setting us a challenge to make a useful invention for the future. It was lots of fun! Next time she comes in she is going to bring motor so our creations can have moving parts.

Week 2 in P4g

Primary 4g…

In maths this week we have been learning about 3D shapes! This included shape properties such as vertices, edges and faces. We made 3D shapes out of art straws and also made them with paper from their nets.

In story writing, we have been writing an imaginative story called ‘The Cottage in the Woods’. We draw a mind map to plan our stories.

In art, we drew a portrait of a friend learning how to draw a face in proportion. We then made a speech bubble about our rights and actions to stick on the mouths to make our Class Charter.

In the creative area we made lots of things! The best one was when we glued down something like a star in the outline and put glitter on it and you had a glitter picture. Miss Goff said there was more glitter on us and the floor than there was on our picture!

Our Class Novel this term is ‘Georges Marvellous Medicine’. Our class loves the book. His grandma is funny!

This week’s Special Person is Annie because:

  • She is astonishing
  • She is kind

P4a

This has been an extremely busy week.

On Monday we had a special treat as Hibs Football Players Alan Maybury and Andy Kirk came along to teach us football skills. We had great fun even though the weather decided it was going to be cold and dull!

Our bowling was cancelled but we got to go on the ‘Giant Walking bus’ instead. We had to come up with a logo very quickly and we all decided that Cameron’s logo was fantastic – ‘You Speed, We Bleed!’

This week we learnt about the digestive system and on Thursday we did an experiment to see how the digestive system works. It was  ‘gross’, ‘disgusting’, ‘cool’, ‘sick’ ‘amazing’ and ‘minted’ depending on who’s view you listened to ! We all had great fun though. We had to make the best poo in our groups but Mrs. Ghafoor couldn’t decide on a winning entry so there were five joint first places!

Can you decide?!
