Last week was yet another busy week in P1a with lots of new learning!

We learned the sounds ie and ar and revised all our tricky words learned so far!  In reading we are identifying as many of our tricky words as possible and are really good at spotting them.  We are really good at blending words and using the pictures to help us read also.

We have learned all about the Stegosaurus – the one with the plates down its back!  This week we are learning all about the  T Rex.  Last week we also learned about what dinosaurs ate.   Carnivores ate meat and had big, sharp, pointy teeth.  Herbivores at plants and had flat teeth and some had long necks to reach leaves.  Omnivores ate both plants and meat.  Humans are omnivores!

img_0599  img_0594

Now that the weather is getting warmer we went out to the playground to play some Maths and Numeracy games.  As a warm up activity, we had to organise ourselves in to a line from 1-20 by looking at our classmates tunics.  We also created addition and subtraction sums using the numbers on our tunics.  That took a bit more thinking and organising.  Being able to find the person with the number before or after the one on our tunic was good fun and we managed to do it quickly and accurately.

Using numbered cones, we practised ordering numbers to 20 and for adding and taking away within 20.

We used fancy shape bean bags to practise throwing into the number net.  Carley got a high score of 21!

Aaron was able to read the number on the tile without counting the dots, which is fabulous!

We continued to learn through play in the classroom as 15-20 minutes outside with a little wind was long enough for Mrs Laidlaw!

P1a become palentologists!

We have started our new Context for Learning…. dinosaurs!  We are very excited about becoming palentologists.  We’ve already hatched our own dinosaurs!  We got ice eggs and hatched our dinosaurs using lots of different strategies….

  • we used tools to smash them open
  • our hands to warm the eggs
  • hot water
  • we dropped them from a height
  • we kicked them off the wall

Here are some photos..

Festive Fun in P1b

We have had a whirlwind of a week in Balbardie Primary School! Here are some of the exciting things we have been getting up to:

We have had a cheeky visitor in our class! ELFIE!!…

She has been very naughty, but has given us lots of great missions to complete each day. On Wednesday our mission was to listen to the teacher and help in the classroom. We helped by cleaning up the paint Elfie spread all over the tables! On Thursday our mission was to be kind to others as some children were being a bit rough with Elfie the day before. Our mission today was to say one nice thing (at least) to someone else. Elfie has been checking that we complete our missions and has been so pleased. We are excited to see what else she gets up to whilst she is here!

On Thursday it was our Primary 1 Christmas Party…

We played lots of fun games, danced to lots of fun music and even got a visit from Santa!! We were so excited and he was very kind to bring us all a present. Everyone was very polite and said “thank you” to Santa – we are hoping we are all on the nice list.

Not to forget that Primary 1 had their Christmas Show Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. The teachers and staff at Balbardie PS were so happy to hear all of your lovely comments. The children did a fantastic job and should really be proud of themselves.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and are excited about our final short week in school next week. Church service is on Wednesday at 9:30am and we hope to see you there!
