1a’s News

Hello there!

We have been snapping some of our favourite or proudest pieces of work recently. A few photos of these to share:

Terrific tartan was created and we learned about our listening lugs and a few other words in Scots too.

We have started to look and listen for the ‘oo’ sound and read ‘Room on the Broom’.

Lastly, we had a go at Move & Freeze – great fun before heading home after a busy day.

Also, we have begun our ‘Farm to Fork’ context for learning. That’s why you’ll see a giant shiny fork on our classroom wall if you visit 1a.  We have been learning that all food comes from plants or animals.

Rookie Rockstars @ BPS

We are loving our Rookie Rockstars experience in school this week.  A reminder that our performance concerts are at 6.30pm on Wednesday 6th December for Bruce & Hardy and Thursday 7th December for Strachan & Macpherson. Tickets costing £5.00 are available from the school office. CDs costing £5.00 will be available to pre-order at the concerts, printed with a winning pupil’s design. Other items of Rookie Rockstars merchandise like wrist bands, t-shirts and badges will be available to buy also.

Children should come to school ready to rock dressed for the concert wearing shades or fancy dress like their favourite rock or pop star. Pupils should report to staff in the upper hall for no later than 6.15pm to check-in. All pupils should be collected by parents/carers at the end of the concert from our gym hall.

We are looking forward to performing!

Creating Some Magic in 1a

This week we have been busy with  preparations for the Christmas Fayre this Saturday and thought we’d share a couple of photos of this. We have been creating, measuring and writing linked to our festive activities this week.

Say hello at the P1 stall and have a closer look at what we’ve been creating.

We hope to see you there and please remember to bring some spending money!

Children in Need

You can help raise awareness and funds for Children in Need this week by wearing something spotty or dressing down this Friday 17th November and making a donation. Some Pudsey and Blush ears have already been spotted in school and P3a and Mrs Harrison are very busy rehearsing for their class assembly on Thursday to tell us more.

Primary 1a – News and Views

Hello there! Or we could say ‘Ola’, ‘Bonjour’ or even ‘Konnichiwa’. We have been trying out these different  greetings in class and enjoy using them.

We have been busy building models in our construction area.

If you’re feeling peckish, you can phone us with a food order for our chef to rustle up something tasty.

We are practising blending and sliding our sounds together to spell words. It helps us to learn by using actions and our whole bodies in phonics lessons.

Lastly, in maths we have begun estimating and measuring using non-standard units – paperclips! Some of our estimates were spot on!

1a – Always Active!

How? Well, we are always learning in active, fun ways. We have been active in learning our sounds, jumping hoops to sound out and spell some words, like pat, pan, pack. We have been active in our maths, building and making patterns. We are learning how patterns can use shape, colour or both together to challenge us. We’ve kept our bodies active too with PE in the gym hall with Mr Jeffries. The bubble game and tunnel tig are favourites with many of us. Did you know we have also been active in trying Cosmic Yoga meeting Popcorn and some pirates! Do you know what kind of animal Popcorn is?

We’d like to say thank you to all the family members who managed to come along and visit us in class last week during our Shared Start session. It was lovely to be tour guides in our classroom and we look forward to welcoming you along again soon.

P1 & P7 Buddy Time

We had a great time in the playground with our P7 buddies this week. Our P7 buddies had prepared some Maths Trails for us and we had to count steps, measure objects or look for 2D shapes around our outdoor space. Some of it was quite challenging. We all enjoyed being outdoors together for our maths learning as part of Maths Week. A little rainy but jackets on and off we went to have fun!

Education Scotland Visit – ‘The Gingerbreid Mannie’

Education Scotland is the national body in Scotland for supporting quality and improvement in learning and teaching. We were very pleased to welcome them to Balbardie PS recently to share our fabulous work on Scots language and performing arts, led with huge enthusiasm by Mrs Innes who teaches Expressive Arts across many of our classes. Congratulations and thanks go to Mrs Innes (and her supporting team) and of course a massive well done to our star pupils. We are very pleased to share this with you:
At the end of last term we had a visit from one of Education Scotland’s team, as our school has been recognised for its work in relation to the Scots language.  The Scots language being regarded as a minority language, and as such is part of the Scottish curriculum.
The children in Mrs Aitken’s class performed their bite sized musical, ‘The Gingerbreid Mannie’ and also sang their warm up songs, ‘Heid, Shooders, Shanks and Taes’ and ‘The Shoogly Woogly’ as well as singing, ‘Last Night There was a Murder in the Chip Shop’.   To say that they were awesome truly does them justice.   Confident individuals who demonstrated success in their learning about the Scots language and where it fitted into Scotland’s story.
The feedback and report given to the school was superb, and we are justifiably delighted with this.
The full class performance was recorded, and I asked that the DVD be made available to parents, should you want one.  This will cost £2.00 to cover the cost of making the DVD.   Letters with a tear-off slip to order  a DVD will be available shortly. Please return the slip with the money for your copy.
Yours sincerely,
Edi Innes
Expressive Arts Teacher

3/2 Time to Get Out(doors)

This week we have enjoyed taking some of our learning outdoors in maths. We have been learning about telling time and this week have been looking at using am or pm correctly. We played a game where we had to decide if an activity could be happening at an am time, a pm time or could be both. Some of us took turns to hold up the signs for am pm or both and the rest had to listen to the sentence, think and then run to what we thought was the correct answer. Here are a few examples for you to try:

‘You are listening to a class assembly’ AM, PM or both?

‘You are brushing your teeth’ AM PM or both?

It was great fun and got our brains working, as well as our legs!

We also laughed lots joining in a game of ‘What’s the Time Mr. Wolf?’

Red Nose Day – Friday 24th March

Here at Balbardie our P4 stage are leading our learning about Red Nose Day, which this year takes place on Friday 24th March. On that day you can wear something red for our Dress Down Day and donate £1.00 to this great cause. The money raised helps to fund projects, in the UK and Africa, that have found effective ways to tackle poverty and injustice.

Order forms have been sent out for you to buy your very own Red Nose. Please complete the order form and return this along with your  £1.00 if you’d like to buy one. Pupils who have ordered so far have enjoyed opening the shiny wrapper to reveal which of the different designs is inside.

Our P4 pupils are awaiting the arrival of their fundraising pack and will update us soon with how we can get involved in supporting Red Nose Day. Check here for more details soon!

App-y Days Have Arrived @ BPS!

Did you know we have our very own app?

This is a new and exciting way of communicating with parents/carers which we are in the early stages of developing. You can download the app for free now by searching in Apple or Google Play stores for Balbardie Primary School. At the moment we have 60 downloads and would love to see this number on the up.

We look forward to using this tool to help us keep in touch about upcoming events, news and to provide another way of  sharing messages with you. Let us know what you think and hAPPy downloading!

2B Scottish Projects and News

We have been working on a project at home. We could make something Scottish like a famous animal, some delicious food or a famous landmark like the Forth Rail Bridge. Everyone was very proud of their projects. Thank you to Mums and Dads and family members who helped us at home.

Other news from our class – In spelling we’ve been learning about ‘oo’ and different ways to make this sound in spelling, like blue, or tooth. There are lots of wobbly teeth in our class just now!

In French we are counting up to 20. We have a song that can help us to keep improving.

2B’s Blether

We have been learning how to write in Scots. We have been using ‘Room on the Broom’ to help us.  We are working on a series of three lessons.  Here are some Scots words for you to guess their meaning – bizzum, dug, puddock.

There is a castle in our classroom at the role play area. This is for our learning across the curriculum. We are thinking about designing a flag for it. Whoever makes the best one, we’re going to display it on the castle.

Butterfly Sparkle is one of our songs from our P2 show called Caterpillar Boogie. It’s a happy song and the first song in the show. Mrs Innes is keeping us guessing about who the special person is during our drama lessons. Maybe we can tell you next week!

Congratulations to Grace M and Alex for being class winners in the Scots poetry competition.

Class O

Class O have been learning about money and using money to buy from the shops. The sensory room had been transformed into a Halloween theme and we had lots of fun playing pin the boo on the ghost and enjoyed playing with the green goo fishing out the spiders and skeletons.

The children thoughts for the week:

Dylan – The electric eel is dangerous and it could kill you. The real name for an electric eel is the knifefish. The electric eel sends 500 volts.

Jayden – On Monday sensory room was spooky for Halloween. There were glow in the dark spiders. Spookyslime was there to touch it felt smooth. We’ve been using coins, counting in pence and pounds for maths. I have also been delivering the children in need orders to all the classes.

Cameron – I enjoyed the handball festival. I scored my first ever goal. The festival was in Bathgate Sports Centre. I went with P5a. We played castles in PE with Mr Jeffries.
