Grounds Group 2021/22

P6/7 are responsible for leading the Grounds Community Leadership Group. See below for what they achieved this year on their journey.

“In our action plan we decided to focus on four different areas. These are planting, grounds maintenance, litter and grounds development.

We noticed that much of the litter being placed in general waste bins and going to landfill was biodegradable and if managed properly could be used to create compost which could  be used in our raised beds to help with planting.

Therefore  we looked at the compost bins already in place in the playground and found these weren’t being used well and contained a variety of litter.  They also had old compost which had not been removed when ready to use.

We worked in a team to empty these old compost containers, sifting out non-biodegradable litter and collecting the good compost to use in our planters.

We also noticed that the old, large compost container down by the field was now almost non-existent and couldn’t be used for bigger garden waste such as branch clippings.  This needed to be rebuilt and the group made the decision to move it to a more central location as this would better for turning the waste and accessing/ using the compost effectively.

The Grounds Group used maths skills to provide designs for a new, large compost container and we picked a new place for it to go. We  then built our design out of old palettes and discarded wooden sheets.

As part of our ground’s maintenance and planting focus, we continue to work together with the rest of the school to ensure our raised planters are well maintained.  Every class has been planting and weeding this year.

We want to ensure our school remains litter free.  We made a new litter picking rota which includes all classes taking responsibility for litter picking duties each week. The Grounds Group are working on new signs for the compost bins so that younger children are aware of the type of items to be placed in general waste and those that should be placed into the compost bins.

Thank you for everyone’s help for the Grounds Leadership Group.
