P1/2 and Our Environment 2024/2025

In the summer term of 2025, our learning context was ‘Our Environment’. We hunted for and identified mini-beasts which live in our school grounds and learned about their habitats. As well as different mini-beasts, we also have many different birds in and around our grounds. We identified magpies, rooks, wagtails, sparrows, robins and a large group of pink-footed geese which stop for a rest on the field next to us during migration in the spring and autumn.

We noticed that some litter had blown from the bins around the playground and we were concerned that this would not be good for the creatures living there. So, we decided to do a big litter pick and collected all the litter we could find. We are continuing to check the grounds each week to make sure it is litter-free and safe for people and animals.

Litter Picking

As a result of our learning, all children are free to volunteer to pick up litter during break times. Our committed volunteers wear high-visibility vests and use the litter pickers provided to remove litter from the playground. Most people put their litter in the bins provided but sometimes, we find that litter blows out of the bin or is accidentally dropped. We are proud of our regular volunteers who help to keep our grounds tidy and safe. Litter picks are carried out at least weekly.
