We began the week with a whole school assembly.  Our assemblies give us a chance to share our learning with each other and to pass on important information about what is happening in our school, our community, South Lanarkshire, Scotland and our world.  Mrs Seenan led our ECO assembly to introduce pupils to ‘Switch off Fortnight’, a national initiative encouraging us to save energy.  Our ECO committee work with Mrs Seenan on our ECO priorities each year, they educate and encourage the pupils of St. Mary’s to think about their actions and the affect they have on the environment.

Our Missio Assembly presented by a representative from Missio Scotland showed our pupils how our donations to Missio can help children on the other side of the world.  We were told stories of children who have been given help and the impact that has had on their lives.  Missio Scotland is one of the charities we donate to each year, we are very grateful to our pupils and families who help us support this worthwhile cause.

Another charity who our Confirmandi and Pope Francis pupils have supported this week is Operation Christmas Child where our pupils made shoeboxes filled with gifts to donate to children overseas.  We donated nearly 100 shoeboxes and received a visit from the Catholic Observer and Hamilton Advertiser to mark the occasion.  I am constantly amazed at the generosity and love shown by our families towards those less fortunate than ourselves.

On Sunday our Confirmandi and Pope Francis pupils took part in their enrolment mass.  They proudly stood in front of their families and members of our parish to begin their journey of the Sacrament of Confirmation and the acts of faith they will perform as part of their Pope Francis Faith Award.  We are very blessed to have such dedicated and honourable pupils.

Many thanks,

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick

We had a fantastic time during our Mental Health and Well Being Week during which we focussed on Dyslexia Awareness, coinciding with Dyslexia Scotland’s Dyslexia Awareness Week.  We started the week discussing the movie ‘Happy Feet’ and everyone’s talents and skills.  All of our classes listened to very insightful and honest presentations given by Primary 7 pupils on “What it’s like to have Dyslexia.”  The feedback from pupils on the presentations was amazing and something that our Primary 7 presenters should be very proud of:

“I didn’t know having Dyslexia could be so hard.”

“Now I know what it would be like to have dyslexia but also that people can help me.”

“Sophia must be very clever to have Dylsexia and do well at her work.”

“Lots of famous people have Dyslexia and if you have it you can get help and you can do things to help yourself.”

We also had a wonderful and emotional day with Fischy Music when we were visited for the day by the creator Stephen Fischbacher on Thursday.  Pupils in primary 4 to Primary 7 took part in workshops and in the afternoon the whole school had a Fischy music concert, joining in to great songs that will help us deal with our emotions.  This will partner our programme of Emotion Works that our classes will be taking part in.

On Friday morning, Primary 3 took part in a Yoga class, courtesy of Prana Yoga Studios, Hamilton.  The children learned some yoga positions to help them stretch and relax their bodies and minds!

Each term the reward for the winning house is a non uniform day.  This was voted for by pupils last year when discussing a reward that they would enjoy and work hard for.  Marian House were the winners for the first term, so came to school on Friday wearing their own casual clothes rather than school uniform!

As always we have a very busy term ahead, however our choir are extremely excited for Monday, 14th November when they will be visiting STV studios in Glasgow!  Follow us on Twitter and watch this space to find out why!

Thanks for reading,

Mrs Elaine Fitzpatrick

We had a spooky start this week with Hallowe’en on Monday.  Rather than dressing up in the usual manner, we celebrated the day with a Pumpkin Parade.  This gave our pupils the opportunity to work with their parents to carve a fantastic pumpkin creation.  I was astounded by the imagination and skill of our pupils.  At assembly each class showed their pumpkins to the whole school and Mrs Cluckie, our School Captains and I judged the best from each class for a Hallowe’en prize.

On Tuesday we attended mass at St. Mary’s Church for All Saints’ Day.  I am extremely proud of every one of our staff and 371 pupils who attend mass as a school and show reverence and respect throughout.  I am also very grateful to St. Mary’s parishioners who make way for us to take up most of the pews in the church!  It is a wonderful opportunity to gather together as a parish to celebrate Mass, led by Fr. O’Brien.

On Wednesday and Friday our Primary 3 classes attended their Reconciliation Retreat at Holy Family Church in Mossend.  Each day, they were accompanied by 5 Holy Cross 6th Year Caritas students.  They had a great day and it was an excellent way for them to reflect and prepare to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in March next year.

Our Active Schools partnership continues with our P5 and P2 lunchtime clubs and P6 Rugby.  Our netball and football teams also proudly represented St. Mary’s at tournaments this week.

A highlight of the week for many of our classes was exploring the Coral Sea and walking along the Great Wall of China courtesy of Google Expeditions!  Thanks to virtual reality equipment our pupils in Primary 4 – 7 took part in various workshops bringing to life the amazing sights before them.

This week we also started our Rainbows workshops, which will last for several weeks.  Most of our teachers have been trained as Rainbows Facilitators led by Mrs Seenan. The workshops are for children who have suffered loss in the form of bereavement, separation or divorce.  They give children the chance to discuss and listen to the stories of others, let them know that they are not going through things alone and that any feelings they have are normal.  Discussions in the workshops are highly confidential and form a place of trust where the children feel comfortable to verbalise their feelings.

All of the activities and opportunities offered to children in St. Mary’s ensure that we are creating pupils who demonstrate the 4 capacities of Curriculum for Excellence – Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Effective Contributors and Responsible Citizens.

Best wishes,

Elaine Fitzpatrick

On Monday evening Primary 7 parents attended our Holy Cross information evening to listen to a presentation delivered by Mrs Fagan, Depute Head of First and Second year.  We were also joined by Mr Reilly, Head Teacher of Holy Cross.  Mrs Fagan informed parents of what happens when their child starts life 0at Holy Cross, she discussed timetables, routines and the school day.  She clearly explained that secondary school is a continuation of learning from primary due to the close relationship and excellent transition programme Holy Cross has with all of the 9 feeder primary schools.  The broad general education of Curriculum for Excellence continues until third year when pupils choose their own subjects to follow.  Parents and pupils also had the opportunity to ask any questions they may have about their transition to high school.  Throughout the year, pupils will have further opportunity to visit Holy Cross during information evenings, Team Building days and Induction days where they will become familiar with the surroundings of Holy Cross and start to develop friendships with peers from other primary schools.

Room 9a participated in their second session of Curling at Hamilton Ice Rink.  They have thoroughly enjoyed their experience and look forward to watching the professionals in action at Braehead Arena.

Room 5 and Room 6 will be joined every Tuesday and Wednesday by 2 students from the University of the West Scotland.  These students are currently studying childcare and will be working with pupils in both classes to enhance their learning in various subjects.  This is a great example of working professional partnerships that hugely benefit both parties.

Primary 1 had a ‘Spooktacular’ time on Wednesday morning when they were joined by parents for numeracy active learning.  Pupils worked with their mums and dads on various Hallowe’en activities such as weighing pumpkins, measuring broomsticks, counting potions and estimating spells.  The morning was a great example of how we make learning meaningful and fun at St. Mary’s by incorporating it into daily life that the children experience.

We have a very busy term ahead of us and we look forward to sharing all of our learning and activities with you here, on Twitter and on our website.

Best wishes,

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick

It was a very exciting week for our Primary 7 pupils as they went on their week long residential trip to Lockerbie Manor on Monday.  Along with mums and dads we waved goodbye to the pupils, Mrs Cluckie, Mr Rimmer, Miss Graham and Miss Tierney.  We were kept up to date with lots of photographs on Twitter – a great way to see how everyone was getting on.  Throughout the week, the children took part in lots of exciting activities such as fencing, rifle shooting, abseiling, den building, zip wire and trust walks.  They all came back on Friday afternoon, exhausted but full of stories about their adventurous week.  I must admit, it was great to see them all home safe and sound and back in the arms of their mums and dads!

Whilst Primary 7 were away, Primary 6 had a team building week.  On Monday and Tuesday they took part in various outdoor learning activities.  On Wednesday, they  visited Carfin Grotto to pass through the Holy Door during the year of Mercy.  This was a very special visit for Primary 6 as, not only is this their Confirmation year but they will also undertake the Pope Francis Faith Award over the next 2 years.  During the day, they visited the national shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes and celebrated mass in St. Francis Xavier’s church.   On Thursday, they had a great time experimenting and looking at optical illusions at Glasgow Science Centre.  Primary 6 finished the week with a US Diner party celebrating food connected with their topics of New York and Spain!  Thank you to our parents for supporting the week, being parent helpers on our trips and donating food from around the world for the party.

Room 9a enjoyed a trip to Hamilton Ice Rink to learn curling this week.  Led by Mr Russell, Room 9a will visit the Ice Rink on one more occasion to allow them to develop new skills and experience a new sport.  This will prepare them for their trip to Braehead Arena in November where they will watch the European Curling Championships 2016.

Our Primary 1 pupils took great delight in being tour guides for their parents at St. Mary’s this week.  They confidently showed their mums and dads all around the school, telling them about the different areas of St. Mary’s.  The tour gave our parents an extra insight into what their children do each day at school.

As always, thanks for reading.  I hope that you all have a great October week!

On Monday our pupils listened to an extremely interesting presentation from Lara McDonald from Glasgow Childrens’ Hospital, one of our chosen charities.  We learned about the important work carried out at the hospital and how we can help.

Our Mary’s Meals backpacks were collected on Wednesday.  Our Primary 7 pupils were very excited loading them into the van, counting each one.  An amazing total of 279 backpacks were donated from our families.  The volunteers at Mary’s Meals informed us that in monetary terms each backpack is worth the equivalent of £14.  Along with raising a fabulous £900 at our Mary’s Meals breakfast, our backpacks are worth £3,906, meaning that we raised an incredible £4,806!  The money and backpacks will make an amazing difference to children less fortunate and we are extremely grateful to all of the support we receive from our parents and families for this charity.

On Thursday night we had our parent interviews where our parents came to school to speak to their child’s teacher and look at their children’s work.  It was a very positive evening and is another example of the essential partnership between St. Mary’s and our parents.  Thank you to all who came.

This weekend I have purchased tissues to prepare myself for monday morning when we wave goodbye to our Primary 7 pupils who are going on their residential trip to Lockerbie Manor!  I am sure they will have an amazing time and I look forward to watching their week on Twitter!

It was a very rainy 4 day week this week, which means lots of ‘wet plays’.  Our Primary 7 leaders monitor classes during these wet plays, under the supervision of our support staff, pupils can draw, chat and play games during the breaks.

Our primary 4 pupils had a Rugby taster session from Hamilton Rugby Club on Wednesday afternoon.  New Image Rugby is a non contact sport and Hamilton Rugby Club will further develop our children’s skills by working with our Primary 5 pupils next term.

4 of our staff visited Woodlands Primary in Cumbernauld on Wednesday to discuss numeracy.  As numeracy is one of our improvement priorities, it is important for us to look at our own practice and look outwards to that of others.  It was a very valuable moderation activity.  I also visited St. Ninian’s Primary, West Lothian on Friday afternoon to discuss Pupil Voice, the other priority on our improvement plan.  Professional dialogue is essential to  move our school forward to ensure our pupils and staff be the best they can be, by visiting other schools and sharing our practice we will do just that!

We had another extremely successful Mary’s Meals Breakfast on Friday morning.  A massive thank you to all of our pupils and parents for supporting the breakfast by giving a donation to Mary’s Meals in exchange for the toast, pancakes, hot chocolate and cereal on offer.  Staff, parents and Primary 7 leaders came to school at 8am to help serve breakfast to pupils.  Each year Mrs McLeod, organises the breakfast and the Back Pack appeal to help children a lot less fortunate, we are very grateful for her hard work in organising such a worthwhile event.

On Monday, our pupils listened to an extremely thought provoking presentation from ‘Classrooms for Malawi’- one of the many charities we donated to through our fundraising during Lent last session.  During the whole school assembly, Room 9a also delivered an interesting presentation on St. Vincent de Paul.  Throughout the year, each class will choose a religious focus to research and deliver at whole school assemblies.

I was extremely proud to attend the Holy Cross Senior Award Ceremony on Wednesday night.  During the evening we were entertained by Holy Cross’ choir and skilled musicians, listened to Professor Anthony Finn and watched as many pupils from S4, S5 and S6 received awards for their varied accomplishments.  We have a fabulous transition programme with Holy Cross and it was very rewarding to see so many ex-St. Mary’s pupils receive awards for their hard work and effort.

On Thursday we had our first Primary 2 multi sports lunch time club ran by our P7 play leaders, assisted by Laura Somerville, our Active Schools Co-ordinator. The Primary 7 pupils were excellent at interacting and leading the p2s in various games, developing co-ordination and co-operation skills.

I can’t believe that the September weekend is here already, however I am sure that all of our pupils are very excited to be on holiday from school for a few days – enjoy!

This was a very exciting week for St. Mary’s as our Primary 7 pupils delivered their House Captain speeches.  On Tuesday, all of our pupils in Primary 4 – 7 gathered together in their houses to listen to the Primary 7s talk about why they would be good ambassadors for St. Mary’s and how they would work hard to lead their house.  After listening to the speeches a secret ballot was held to vote for Captains and Vice Captains.  I was extremely proud of each and every one of our Primary 7s who stood confidently in front of their peers and delivered their speeches in a very professional manner.  For each house, Marian, Douglas, Chatelherault and Hamilton, a Captain and 2 Vice Captains were elected who I am sure will lead their houses with pride and dedication.

As part of their leadership responsibilities our Primary 7 pupils have been working with Laura Somerville, our Active Schools Co-ordinator, to become play leaders.  The Play Leaders will begin their first multi sports lunchtime club next week with some of our Primary 2 pupils.

On Thursday night we held our Curriculum/Meet the Teacher evening.  We decided to change the format of the evening this year by displaying all of the resources we use in each classroom for various curriculum areas.  This allowed our parents to peruse the resources and discuss how they are used and what they could do at home to support their child.  It was also an excellent opportunity for parents to introduce themselves to their child’s teacher and begin to develop that crucial home/school partnership that is vital to every child’s development.  The evening, attended by over 200 parents, was a great success with extremely positive evaluations!  Many thanks to all of the parents who attended and to our dedicated staff for preparing the evening.  This was a great event to begin our academic year and we look forward to another successful year working in partnership with our parents for the benefit of all of our pupils.

On Monday, we had our first ‘Achievements Assembly’ of the year.  At these monthly assemblies we celebrate any achievements our children have accomplished outside of school.  We celebrated various achievements related to football, swimming, music accomplishments, cycling and dance.  Pupils also listened to a presentation on the canonisation of Mother Teresa and the many achievements she accomplished throughout her life.

On Tuesday we welcomed colleagues from the Holy Cross Learning Community to a Numeracy twilight led by maths guru Lynda Keith.  Numeracy is a priority on our Learning Community Improvement Plan and the twilight was part of the work we will do throughout the year to ensure that all of the pupils from the 9 primary schools going to Holy Cross have a consistent experience in maths to encourage them to reach their full potential.

We work very closely with Fr. O’Brien and on Wednesday we celebrated mass at St. Mary’s Church to mark the beginning of the school year.  Our Primary 7 pupils led the mass and our Primary 1 pupils sang Happy Birthday to Mary to mark the the feast day of Our Lady’s birthday on 8th September.

On Thursday and Friday I attended the CHAPS conference (Catholic Headteachers Association of Primary Schools).  The yearly conference brings together headteachers of Catholic schools throughout Scotland and provides the opportunity to share good practice and raise awareness of new resources produced by SCES, (the Scottish Catholic Education Service).  The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Raising Scotland’s Catholic future’. Along with listening to various inspirational speakers, representatives from each authority in Scotland took part in a panel discussion about the issues facing education and delegates also listened to John Swinney discuss the Scottish Government’s plans for Scottish education.
