We all enjoyed a lovely long February weekend this week when staff and pupils were off school on Monday and Tuesday.  Our pupils also enjoyed an extra day on Wednesday when staff had an inservice day.  Staff Development Days are invaluable to develop abilities and knowledge to ensure that we are delivering the best education possible for our children.  On Wednesday morning, the teaching staff of St. Mary’s worked on ‘Big Writing’.  Through professional dialogue, we shared various teaching strategies and the stage we expect pupils to be writing at in order to achieve a level.  This moderation of work is essential to ensure the consistent high expectations we have of our pupils.  In the afternoon we discussed the new Staged Intervention process that schools must adhere to in order to meet pupil needs.  In St. Mary’s, interventions are put in place as soon as we feel a child is struggling in some way in an area of the curriculum, this may be through the use of resources, a different teaching style or the use of support staff.  Through careful tracking and monitoring we can then measure the success of these interventions or if we need to progress on to the next stage by including our specialist support teacher or other partners such as our educational psychologist.  Throughout this whole process the school, pupil and parents all work in partnership to ensure the pupil finds success.

It was a short 2 day week for our pupils but they have worked hard nonetheless.  Primary 1 continue to have parents visit them in the afternoon to enhance their interdisciplinary topic of ‘Children Around the World’.  The parents have been telling them about how life was growing up in countries such as Poland, Ireland, Italy and Spain.  The children have learned so much from these parents and we are very grateful that they gave up some of their time to talk to us and bring the topic to life.

On Friday, our senior pupils took part in Burns Auditions for the ‘Hamilton District Burns Recital’ to be held in March.  The children have worked very hard to memorise and beautifully recite Tam O’ Shanter.  Unfortunately, not all pupils can represent St. Mary’s at the competition but we are extremely proud of every single child who auditioned.

Next week our Confirmandi will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.  It will be a very special time for them.  Please keep them in your prayers.

Best wishes,

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick

This week we welcomed Mrs Benson to Room 9, a Post Graduate student who is with us until Easter.  She will be mentored by Mrs Devine and I am sure that she will learn many things and develop her teaching style during her time here at St. Mary’s.  By agreeing to students working in our school we are creating future teachers for our children.  In a time where there is a national shortage of teachers, especially denominational ones, it is essential to encourage and support those learning this vocation.

Tuesday this week was ‘Safer Internet Day’, therefore throughout the week our classes have been researching the theme on how to make the internet a safer place by making sure they know how to keep themselves safe whilst surfing the ‘net.

Our Girls Football team had their first outing this week in a Hamilton schools tournament.  They played very well, started to bond as a team and look forward to many more matches in the future.

Rooms 11 and 12 had a fabulous day on Thursday when they visited Kelvingrove Museum and People’s Palace to enhance their interdisciplinary study of World War II.  The pupils had the opportunity to look at life on the Home Front, propaganda used during the war and the life of a soldier.  Our Chess Team also enjoyed an outing on Thursday to Milton Primary School where they took part in an inter schools chess tournament.  Many thanks to the parents who helped on both trips.

Our pupils and staff are looking forward to the February weekend, where they will have an extra couple of days off school, with our pupils also having Wednesday off for a Staff Development Day.

Enjoy the break!

We had a fabulous celebration on Tuesday afternoon when Robbie Stewart along with many other invited guests came to our school to present us with the Gold Award from SportScotland.  After gaining the award in November 2016, Tuesday was our chance to share the many ways St. Mary’s pupils are involved in sporting activities with our pupils, staff and sporting partners.  Our Sports Committee began the ceremony by delivering a presentation on sport to the whole school, we then watched a short film  of how we celebrate sport and fitness in St. Mary’s through P.E., extra curricular clubs, tournaments and achievements outwith school.  Our invited guests included many of our sport partners and people who have supported us throughout the years,  we are extremely grateful that we were able to share this special occasion with them and for their continued support.  Robbie Stewart, from SportScotland, presented Mr McManus and Laura Somerville, along with our sports captains with the Sport Scotland Gold Award flag, which we will proudly display in our gym hall for all to see.

Our Primary 6 and 7 pupils had a lovely time at Holy Family Parish Centre, Mossend, on Thursday and Friday, where they attended a Confirmation Retreat.  During the retreat the Confirmandi had the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of the sacrament and the gifts they will gain during their Sacrament of Confirmation on 25th February.  The pupils were accompanied by Holy Cross Caritas students who helped deliver and support the sessions.  We have an excellent partnership with Holy Cross and the S6 Caritas students who helped us were great ambassadors for such a wonderful school!

Room 8 celebrated Harry Potter day this week!  The pupils used their literacy and numeracy skills to design and create robes, make potions, work on duration and time using the Hogwarts Express timetable and converted Muggle Money to Wizard Money!  The children all had great fun throughout the day!

Room 10 visited Hamilton Townhouse Library on Friday to develop their research skills.  The children used their literacy skills to research and look for facts and then delivered their finding to their peers.

Our Reconciliation and First Communion pupils are looking forward to taking part in their Enrolment Mass, tomorrow, Sunday 5th February.  During the mass they will promise to prepare with their family and friends for their upcoming Sacrament.  This mass will also celebrate Catholic Education Week, where students from Holy Cross and St. Mary’s will deliver the readings and be involved in the offertory procession.

Thanks for reading about our week,

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick

For Burns day this week our Primary 5, 6 and 7 classes began rehearsing a famous Burns poem to recite at the Hamilton Burns Competition in March, where various schools from across Hamilton compete to move onto the next stage at the Lanarkshire heats.  Our Primary 1 classes are studying, ‘Children Around the World’, so have appropriately started with traditions and practices in our own country of Scotland.  As part of this Mr McManus taught the pupils some traditional Scottish dancing and they also celebrated Burns’ Day by tasting some Scottish food.

Our netball team took part in their first tournament of the year, led by Miss Graham.  They also had a very special visitor, Bethan Goodwin, who spoke to pupils in Primary 6 and 7 about being Holy Cross Sports Captain and playing Netball professionally for the Sirens!  Bethan also stayed after school to coach our netball team on shooting skills.

Rooms 7, 8 and 9 braved the icy cold at Hockey this week.  Each week they will be taught by Tom from Uddingston Hockey Club, who is extremely dedicated in helping our pupils develop their talents by working with them every Friday and at our after school club.

Our Sports Leaders continue to work with younger pupils each week under the guidance of Laura Somerville.  They are developing their skills in leadership by organising games for pupils in Primary 3.  Our Primary 6 pupils are also developing their leadership skills by visiting Cadzow and Lilybank Nurseries every Wednesday.  Each week a group of P6 pupils go to the nurseries and work with the younger children to prepare them in their role as P7 buddies next session.

As always – thanks for reading!

This week we broke our Twitter record and now have 202 followers!  We have found that using Twitter is a very efficient and easy way to share what is happening in St. Mary’s with our parents.  Thank you to all of our followers.

Some of our Primary 6 pupils decorated a Christmas Postbox for Frankie and Benny’s and as a reward were given a ‘Pizza Party’.  The pupils visited the shop during the week and created their own pizzas, taking into consideration the necessary ingredients and how to cook their creations.  As a thank you the pupils were given a ‘free kid’s meal for a year’ pass to Frankie and Benny’s!

During P.E. this week pupils have been studying gymnastics.  They have been looking at ways of travelling, jumping and rolling.  Lots of our pupils attend gymnastics classes outside of school and have been sharing their skills and talents with others during the lessons.

South Lanarkshire’s primary 1 enrolment process began this week, although the process takes a lot longer than one week!    At regular intervals all schools must submit their pupil numbers to SLC in order to be informed of how many classes they will have next session.  Between now and June we will be looking at our class configuration and how to best accommodate all of the pupils in our care to ensure their success.

Our Primary 3, 4, 6 and 7 classes are busy preparing for their upcoming Sacraments in February, March and May.  Through lessons in class, home sessions and church practices our pupils will be fully prepared to receive their Sacraments and become fuller members of our church.

Happy New Year!  I can’t believe that 2017 is here.  After a lovely Christmas holiday our pupils and staff returned to school on Monday 9th January eager to start the new year.

Primary 6 and 7 didn’t get long to settle back into the school routine when they received vocal tuition on Monday morning from Scottish Opera to prepare them for their performance of Tam O’Shanter later on in the week!  A team from Scottish Opera came to school on Thursday to work with our senior pupils.  They spent the morning working on an operatic production of Tam O’Shanter which resulted in an amazing performance for Primary 4 and 5 to watch in the afternoon.  A huge thank you to Scottish Opera for sharing their time and expertise with our pupils and staff.

This week we welcomed Mrs Claudia Duncan to St. Mary’s, a new member of teaching staff, who will be working with Rm 9a and Rm10.  I am sure she will be made very welcome at St. Mary’s and has already commented on the impeccable behaviour and work ethic of our pupils, encouraged by our school values each day.

As always, life will be busy at St. Mary’s this year as we look forward to many exciting learning opportunities for our pupils and we also look forward to enrolling our new Primary 1 pupils next week!

Best wishes,

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick

It has been a wonderful week at St. Mary’s, full of festive cheer!

On Tuesday and Wednesday our family and friends joined us to watch Primary 1 – 4 perform the story of the Nativity and Primary 5 – 7 entertain us with Christmas songs.  The pupils were absolutely wonderful and I was extremely proud to watch them on stage.

Primary 5, 6 and 7 have also wowed us this week wearing their finery for their Christmas parties.  They have all had a fabulous time dancing and playing party games with their friends.  A highlight was watching them perform the Gay Gordon’s to Bruno Mar’s ‘Uptown Funk’!

On Thursday we had our Christmas Lunch.  Our Kitchen staff work very hard and it was ‘all hands on deck’ to serve lunch for over 300 pupils!  The pupils enjoyed eating lunch with their friends and being served by teaching and support staff whilst listening to Christmas tunes!

Our choir entertained Morrison’s customers and senior citizens at the Water Palace this week.  We received lovely comments from members of the public about our pupils manners, appearance, behaviour and most of all their wonderful singing!

All of the staff of St. Mary’s are very dedicated and work extremely hard to organise events and activities throughout the year and we are very much looking forward to the festivities next week and our Christmas Mass on Wednesday before we finish for our Christmas break.

Best wishes,

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick

Christmas cheer is all around at St. Mary’s.  On Thursday we had our Christmas jumper day!    Everyone was looking very festive in their Christmas finery.  The money raised from this goes towards the cost of our Christmas parties.

On Tuesday evening Fr. O’Brien came to school to talk to the parents of our Sacramental classes about the sacraments they are going to receive this year.  Fr. O’Brien explained the reason for the Sacraments and the importance of them.  The evening gave parents the opportunity to ask any questions and to find out what was expected of them, strengthening the home, school and parish partnership.

Our Primary 7 play leaders had a fun lunchtime club on Thursday when our active schools co-ordinator Laura Somerville, treated them to a afternoon of fun and games after all of their hard work as play leaders. We are very proud of our play leaders, Laura has been extremely complimentary about their leadership and mentoring skills when working with the younger classes.  Well done P.7!

On Friday afternoon we had a lovely time at the Baptism of 4 our Primary 3 pupils.  In front of their classmates and members of their family, Fr. O’Brien baptised the girls, welcoming them into the church.  It was a lovely occasion and a privilege for the school to be involved in the sacrament in such a special way.

We are looking forward to our festive activities next week and welcoming our friends and family to our Nativity performance.  I’m sure that it will be wonderful!

Best wishes,

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick

This week saw the first week of Advent, when our beautiful crib is erected in the foyer of our school for all to see.  We concluded the month of November where we prayed for all those who have died and began thinking about preparing for the celebration of Jesus’ birth.  So far, we have had an amazing response for our Advent appeal for Lanarkshire Baby Bank and look forward to presenting our collection very soon.

On Tuesday we had 6 very special visitors to our school from Education Scotland.  They had a lovely day visiting our classes and talking to pupils about their learning.  We were all very proud to hear their comments about how well children thrive at St. Mary’s.

St. Mary’s elves have been working hard all week creating lovely crafts to sell at our Christmas Fayre.  Our Parent Council have also been working very hard organising the fayre.  Each year, our Christmas Fayre is one of the highlights of the year.  Along with being a very successful fundraiser it is also a great opportunity for a spot of Christmas shopping for unique gifts and a chance to get in the Christmas mood by listening to our wonderful Christmas Choir beautifully led by Mrs Cluckie and Mrs Phillips.  This year we had a very different stall from usual – one that celebrated different cultures and Christmas traditions from around the world.  In St. Mary’s our families speak 16 different languages and we feel that it is very important to recognise and celebrate these, therefore our Parent Council organised a stall to mark countries around the world that pupils from St. Mary’s are connected to.  The stall was adorned with an amazing nativity scene from Naples and guests to the fayre could taste baking and take home a recipe to try!   I would like to offer a huge thank you to all who supported our Christmas Fayre and also to our fabulous Parent Council who work tirelessly for our pupils.

Many thanks,

Mrs. Fitzpatrick

Winter has definitely arrived as it was a very icy week this week at St. Mary’s!

Continuing the ice theme Room 9a enjoyed their trip this week to Braehead Arena to cheer on the Scotland team at the European Curling Championships.  They enjoyed their time at the fan zone and watching the professionals in action.  Room 9a weren’t the only ones to enjoy wandering further afield this week, Rooms 3 and 4 visited Glasgow Science Centre taking part in many learning activities related to their interdisciplinary topic of Space.

This year every class has had the opportunity to visit Hamilton Townhouse Library.  This week Rooms 1 and 2 listened to a live version of ‘The Tiger Who Came To Tea’, whilst Rooms 7 and 8 took part in a story telling session with author Gerry Durkin.  Some pupils from the classes also had the opportunity to be the visiting authors as they read their own stories to an audience of pupils from surrounding schools.

Our Primary 6 pupils are developing their role as buddies for nursery pupils in Lilybank and Cadzow Nurseries.  Every Wednesday, 5 of our primary 6s visit the nurseries to work with their children.  This is a great opportunity to develop buddy skills and to get to know our future Primary 1 pupils.

We are looking forward to a busy week next week preparing for our Parent Council Christmas Fayre on Friday!

Thanks for reading,

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick
