This week, representatives from SYSTRA, an international engineering and consulting group, worked with Primary 6 and 7, discussing sustainable transport and the effects that different modes of transport have on our environment.  They will return next week for a whole school action day where our senior pupils will raise awareness of these issues and how we can help.  This action day fits perfectly in with our ECO priority of transport and is an excellent follow up to Walk to School week.

The discussion on the work that SYSTRA does was also an excellent follow up to our Skills for Work week.  Our Skills Week was a great success, with many of our parents volunteering to come into classes to talk about the skills they use in their chosen career.  A massive thank you to our parents, who inspired and captured the interest of our pupils.  We now need to think how we can improve on this success for next year!

Our girls took part in a 5 a side tournament on Friday, competing for the ‘Belt Up Cup’ against various other Hamilton schools.  As we are the reigning trophy winners we were over the moon when they returned home with the trophy, however that was not the main reason why I was bursting with pride on Friday afternoon.  The girls played in a very close final against Chatelherult Primary.  Initially St. Mary’s were winning 2-0 but then Chatelherault scored 2 goals which resulted in a penalty shoot out, at which we won.  Our girls showed true sportsmanship by being extremely graceful when winning by shaking hands with the losing team and waiting until they had left the pitch before celebrating.  This shows that our pupils truly live by the values we try to instil by being empathetic to the feelings of others and by the lessons Mr McManus continually teaches all of our footballers.  I am extremely proud.  Well done girls!

On Saturday we held our yearly Summer Fair.  Once again, it was a roaring success due to the support of our family and friends who came to take part in activities such as tombola, hook a duck, mega ball games, St. Mary’s Bake Off, bouncy castles, glitter tattoos and many more.  The event could not have been such a success if it had not been for our amazing Parent Council who organised and worked tirelessly throughout the day!

The weeks are flying past and it will soon be our Summer holidays, however our children and staff will continue to work hard and develop their skills until the last day!

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick

Our footballers had a busy week this week.  After competing in the Davey Cooper Cup last Sunday, our girls played on Wednesday at Hamilton Palace Grounds, whilst our boys competed in the Shinwell Cup on Friday afternoon, successfully qualifying for the next round.

Our Study Skills club after school on Monday continues to be very popular with nearly 30 pupils attending each week.  Mrs O’Neill, Mrs Devine and Mrs Benson have been working with pupils from Primary 5 and 6 to help them with their homework or work on an aspect of their learning that they wish to develop.  Huge thanks goes to our members of staff who give up their time each week for pupils to take part in after school activities such as football, netball, recorder, choir, dance, cross country and study skills.

Our Primary 7 pupils have been involved in Literacy and Numeracy assessments this week to prepare them for secondary school in August.  All pupils from schools in the Holy Cross Learning Community undertake these assessments during the same week in order for staff from Holy Cross to gain an insight into the strengths is extremely thorough with team building days, induction days, primary visits and joint assessments.  All of this means that the staff at Holy Cross will know our pupil’s strengths and development needs by the time they begin secondary school.

On Thursday we joined together as a school to say a decade of the Rosary in honour of the 100th Anniversary of Fatima.   The pupils and staff also watched a cartoon telling the story of the  3 children visited by Our Lady.  The date was particularly poignant for us as the anniversary occurred on 13th May, the date when pupils of our school received their First Holy Communion.  Saturday, 13th May was a fabulous day.  50 of our pupils, mostly Primary 4, received the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time.  The children were wonderful throughout the service.  There was not a dry eye in St. Mary’s church listening to the pupils and choir sing throughout the mass and watching them on the altar receive their First Communion and then sing their Communion Thanksgiving Hymn.  They were joined by family and friends to help them celebrate this special day.  Thanks to Mrs Cluckie, Mrs Feeney and Mrs Campbell for working with our pupils to prepare them for their special day and to members of our choir for giving up their time to join us.

Thank you for reading our weekly blog,

Best wishes,

Elaine Fitzpatrick

With May Day and an Inservice Day, our pupils may have had 2 days holiday this week but some of our children have also had a busy weekend representing St. Mary’s Primary!

Thursday was a Staff Development Day in South Lanarkshire, one of 5 days throughout the year when pupils are absent from school and staff work together on taking the school forward.  We had Marion Graham from Soul Success in working with staff on Thursday morning.  It was an excellent morning of team building and self evaluation.

We continue to develop our sporting skills at St. Mary’s with our Primary 3 pupils now enjoying taking part in hockey each Friday, learning a new sport and building their skills in playing the team sport, whilst our Primary 6 pupils continue with their swimming lessons every Friday afternoon.

On Friday evening several of our pupils represented St. Mary’s at Hamilton Primary Schools Swimming Gala.  The children all performed exceptionally well, working hard with excellent results!  A huge thank you to the Mitchell family who have gifted us with St. Mary’s swim caps, allowing us to easily spot our pupils as they race through the water.

On Saturday, 2 of our senior girls represented St. Mary’s at the Burns Federation Final at St. Athanasius Primary School, Carluke.  The girls both sang well and faced very tough competition throughout the day.

On Sunday some of our Primary 6 and 7 boys and girls took part in the Davey Cooper Memorial Cup.  It was a glorious morning for football and the members of both teams played great.  Unluckily, our girls never made it through to the semi finals, missing out by one point!  Our boys played a good game but unfortunately lost one-nil in the semi finals.

We are very proud of all of our pupils for giving up their own time to represent St. Mary’s and try their very best.  I am also extremely grateful to our staff and parent helpers for giving up their own time to support and encourage our children.  Without them, taking part in events such as these would not be possible.

Our Primary 4 pupils have a busy week ahead as they prepare for their First Communion on Saturday, 13th May.  Please keep them all in your prayers.

Best wishes,

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick

During the last week of April 2017 our staff and pupils continue to work very hard each day.

Our Primary 6 pupils have created fantastic ‘buddy books’ to give to their buddies who will be starting Primary 1 at St. Mary’s in August. The books tell their buddies all about them and what to expect when they start primary school.  Our Primary 6 pupils can’t wait to meet their buddies on the P1 Induction Days in May!

Room 8 attended Holy Family Parish Centre in Mossend for their First Holy Communion Retreat on Thursday.  They had a lovely, peaceful day and are now fully prepared to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist on Saturday, 13th May.

It was lovely to have Mrs. Cotter in school on Friday in Room 11.  Mrs Cotter is currently on Maternity Leave and will return to school in August.  We have missed her friendly face around the school and it’s lovely when she comes in to visit for the day!  Another friendly face visited us this week – it was great to see Mrs McLeod looking fit and healthy.  We look forward to her returning to school this term.

Thank you for reading my weekly blog about what is happening in our school,

Mrs. E. Fitzpatrick

Our pupils returned for Easter Week after having a lovely Easter holiday.  Primary 5 had no time to settle in as they took part in Hamilton Schools Rugby Festival organised by Hamilton Rugby Club and SLC Active Schools!  The pupils had a great morning playing ‘touch rugby’, learning skills with lots of other schools.

Room 7 also ventured out this week for their First Communion Retreat.  Pupils in St. Mary’s preparing for sacraments go to Holy Family in Mossend to take part in a day of reflection, conversation and meditation organised by Motherwell diocese.  The children had a wonderful day.  Room 8 will experience the retreat next week, ensuring that all of our Primary 4 pupils are thoroughly prepared for this special Sacrament.

We had our Parent Council meeting on Wednesday night.  I am extremely grateful to our Parent Council, who support our school so well.  Approximately 26 parents were in attendance at the meeting, which is a fantastic amount to promote discussion on matters important to our school.

Our Parental Survey closed on Friday.  90 responses were made to the survey, representing 112 pupils.  The results and comments of the survey will be given to parents in the next newsletter.  Thank you very much to everyone who took the time to complete the survey, it really makes a difference to us and helps us move the school forward together.

Our week finished with 4 of our Primary 4 pupils representing the school at the Hamilton Schools Tennis Festival on Sunday at Hamilton Tennis Club.  The boys had a great morning, taking part in 10 games of tennis each!  SLC Active Schools work in partnership with many local clubs to develop sporting skills in our pupils.  We are also very fortunate that Hamilton Tennis Club volunteer every Thursday lunchtime in our school to work with Primary 3 pupils.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read our blog and find out what we have been up to during the school week.  Remember photographs from our week are on Twitter!

Thanks,

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick

It is nearly our Easter holidays and the days are flying past!  Our pupils have been involved in preparation for ECO week and have been showing off their marvellous ‘upcycling’ creations.  On display we have lots of amazing items such as lamps made from bottles and dresses made from umbrellas!  Earth Hour was on Saturday night and I’m looking forward to hearing about the candle lit evening our pupils had!

It was a busy week for Primary 7, which began on Tuesday when they delivered their STEM presentations on Waste Management.  They worked hard to research and create a very comprehensive presentation which they delivered professionally to our STEM ambassadors.  Primary 7s were also involved in the Hamilton Rotary Quiz on Tuesday evening where 8 schools from across Hamilton competed by answering questions on general knowledge, popular music, geography, riddles, local knowledge and recent news.  On Friday, our Primary 7s visited Holy Cross for their Team Building Day.  This was an excellent chance for them to get to know other pupils who will be in first year with them at secondary school.  A huge thank you to the S6 pupils from Holy Cross who organised the day, along with SLC Active Schools.

Pupils from Primary 5 – 7 also travelled to Lesmahagow on Thursday to compete in a South Lanarkshire chess tournament.  Our chess club runs every Tuesday after school and competing in tournaments gives the pupils the perfect opportunity to test the skills that they have developed.

Parent’s evening on Thursday gave our parents the opportunity to find out how their child is progressing in school and how they can help in their child’s learning.  It was also an opportunity for parents to see their child’s jotters and work on display in the classroom.  Room 4 also had an extra opportunity to show parents their work when they delivered their learning showcase on the Egyptians to their parents and grandparents.  It was a wonderful afternoon, where pupil shared their learning about the Egyptians and even tested their parents knowledge of heiroglyphics!

We were extremely honoured this week to be awarded  ‘Sporting School of the Year’ by Hamilton Sports Council at their award ceremony on Thursday evening.  This is a huge honour for us and is due to the opportunities that our pupils receive in sport through our P.E., extra curricular clubs and pupils own achievements outside of school.  A massive thank you to our staff and volunteers who give up their time to work with pupils in the many clubs we have.

One more week to go until our Eater Holidays and a busy week it will be!

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick

We began the start of our ECO celebrations this week, with Mrs Seenan and our ECO Committee delivering a presentation on Waste Week.  All week our pupils have been ‘upcycling’ by bringing in objects they have made at home by creating new from old.  We have had some wonderful and some wacky creations and can’t wait to display them for all to see!

On Wednesday night some of our Primary 3 pupils were joined by a few children from other primaries to receive the Sacrament of Reconcilation.  This is our second night celebrating our pupils receiving this Sacrament due to the number of pupils we currently have in Primary 3.  I was very proud of all of our children, who showed reverence throughout the service, and of our Pope Francis Faith Award pupils who joined them as our choir.  Thanks also to Fr. O’Brien for leading the service and to Mrs Cluckie, Mrs McDougall, Miss Whelan and Mrs Smith for preparing our children to receive this Sacrament.

Our pupils in Primary 4 – 7 have been enjoying participating in Golden Time each week.  They have been developing skills such as curling, football, ICT and ukulele!  Our Twitter feed has been keeping parents up to date on some of the activities their children have chosen.

On Thursday afternoon we hosted the Hamilton Burns Club Musical Competition. 6 of our pupils competed against Hamilton College for a place in the Lanarkshire heat on the 28th of this month.  Our pupils entertained the audience with ‘Please Don’t Go’, ‘Caledonia’ and ‘Scot’s Wha Hae!’, whilst our musical pieces on clarinet and guitar were ‘The Skye Boat Song’ and ‘Ye Banks and Braes’.  Our entrants sang and played beautifully and all will be competing at St. Aidan’s High on the 28th!  Well Done!

Our prayers were with our Primary 3 pupils from Room 4 and 5 this week when they received the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Tuesday night.  We were extremely proud of all of the pupils who received the sacrament for the first time with the support of their family and friends.  Thanks also to members of our school choir who supported the pupils on the night.  Please keep our Primary 3 pupils from Rooms 4 and 6 in your prayers as they prepare to receive the sacrament on Wednesday night this week.

Rooms 3, 4 and 10 all participated in their sponsored event for Lenten charities this week, with Room 9a continuing to run their daily mile.  Thank you very much to our families who support us with our almsgiving during Lent.

Our football team and our Cross Country runners all participated in events this week.  They showed commitment and determination from training weekly to taking part in the actual events.  Thank you to Mr McManus and Mr Russell for giving up their time after school to organise these clubs.

Mrs Seenan attended a moderation event for the Pope Francis Faith Award this week.  Our Primary 6 and 7 pupils participate in the Pope Francis Faith Award, showing  commitment to their faith and helping others.  The moderation event, involving teachers from many other establishments in Motherwell Diocese, allowed professionals to discuss and compare the booklets pupils record their evidence in to ensure a high standard of work to award a pass.

As always, thanks for reading

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick

This week saw the beginning of Fair-trade Fortnight where each of our classes will discuss  and take part in various activities, raising awareness of Fair-trade.  As we are a Fair-trade school, our Easter Coffee morning at the end of term will obviously be a Fair-trade one!

On Monday, I attended a Head Teacher’s conference at Celtic Park to discuss the Government’s Pupil Equity Funding.  The Pupil Equity Fund has been introduced to schools to close the attainment gap between the lowest and highest achieving pupils.  Schools have received funding dependent on how many pupils are entitled to free school meals within their establishment.  With our Parent Council, pupils and staff we will create an Equity Group to discuss the best use of this funding for St. Mary’s.  Exciting times ahead!

Mrs Phillips continued to visit nurseries this week as part of our Early Years Transition programme.  We take pupils from 17 nurseries across South Lanarkshire in Primary 1, therefore in order to make sure that we know the strengths of each child we talk to key workers and observe the pupils during play.  This helps create a smooth transition for pupils from Early Years establishments to Primary School.

The whole school attended mass this week to celebrate Ash Wednesday, beautifully led by our Pope Francis Faith Award pupils.  This marks the beginning of Lent for us.  Parents received information on the various Lenten activities we will have as part of our charity work, culminating with our Easter Bonnet parade at the end of term.

On Wednesday evening, we were very proud to watch Michael, Owen, Justin and Eilidh represent St. Mary’s at the Hamilton Burns competition.  Michael and Owen recited ‘Scots Wha Hae’, whilst Justin and Eilidh delivered ‘Tam O’Shanter’.  The competition was very tough with St. Elizabeth’s Primary, Townhill Primary , Woodside Primary and Hamilton College all involved.  Congratulations to Justin, who came Second place and will proceed to the next round of the Lanarkshire Burns Competition at the end of March!

A smile was on everyone’s lips on Thursday as we watched our pupils come to school dressed as their favourite book character for World Book Day 2017!  A huge effort was put into creating the costumes and we are extremely grateful to our parents for their help with this.  Dressing up as a book character lets children explore novels and encourages discussion of favourite books!

As always, thanks for reading,

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick

Some of our Primary 6 and 7 pupils had a very late night on Tuesday night, when 70 pupils and 10 adults visited the Emirates Stadium to watch the Sirens Netball Team play in the new netball Super League!  Bethan Goodwin, an S6 pupil at Holy Cross, has visited our school to talk to senior pupils and work with our netball team.  The children were keen to watch her in action and show their support.  A huge thank you to Mr McPartlane who arranged the tickets for our pupils.  A great experience!

Primary 4 – 7 this week had their first session of ‘Golden Time’. ‘Golden Time’ is part of our Promoting Positive Behaviour Policy where pupils earn time each day to choose a skill they would like to develop on a Friday.  ‘Golden Time’ choices include subjects such as percussion, mindfulness, football and curling.  This form of personalisation and choice increases pupil voice and allows them to be more involved in their own learning.  The success of Golden Time will be evaluated by pupils through our COGS meetings.

Our footballers took part in the James Nesbitt Cup on Friday and made it all the way to the finals to be played in March.  I am very proud of our footballers who worked well together as a team but praise also goes to Mr McManus who coaches our team.  Mr McManus is always very fair, taking into consideration each player’s skills, talents and attitudes, encouraging them to reach their full potential.

On Friday afternoon, we waved adieu to Mrs Campbell, who has now started her Maternity Leave.  We wish her all the best and can’t wait to meet her new bundle of joy when they arrive!

The highlight of our week was on Saturday morning when 85 of our senior pupils received the Sacrament of Confirmation in St. Mary’s Church from Bishop Toal.  I was extremely proud of each and every one of our Confirmandi who participated fully in the service, demonstrating their readiness to receive the Sacrament to become full members of the Catholic Church.  This preparation is thanks to class teachers, Mrs Cluckie and parents who have worked with the children over the last few months to ensure their understanding of the Sacrament.  We are very grateful to Bishop Toal and Fr. O’Brien, who celebrated the mass, delivering some very important messages to the congregation about the importance of our faith.  Thanks also to the staff of St. Mary’s who attended the mass to support our pupils.   The staff received some lovely comments recognising their continuous commitment and care to all our pupils. We continue to pray for the newly confirmed boys and girls, that filled with the Holy Spirit, they may continue to live their lives following the example of Jesus.

Best wishes,

Mrs. Elaine Fitzpatrick
