SQA publishes revision support for learners taking National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher exams

8 March 2022

The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) has published revision support to help learners undertaking National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher courses as they prepare for this year’s exams.

The materials are part of a wide-ranging package of support to ease pressure on learners following disruption to learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The revision support includes:

  • Advance notice of content that will, or will not be in the exam

For some courses, SQA has published information on which broad topics, contexts or content will or will not be in this year’s exam. This will help learners to plan their revision and focus more on the parts of the course that will be in the exam, though learners can still use their knowledge of other parts of the course when developing their answers to questions.

  • Study guides

For some courses, SQA has published study guides to help learners practice answering exam questions. These give hints and tips on how to approach different types of questions, including how to gain marks.

  • Study notes (learners’ own)

In a small number of courses, learners will be allowed to create a short study note that they can take with them into the exam hall with them.

Learners can access the revision support from Ushare, SQA’s online platform which hosts links to open-source revision materials and teaching resources that support SQA qualifications.

In mid-March, SQA will also publish its Your Exams booklet; a guide for learners about what they need to know about their exams. Copies will be available through schools, colleges, and training providers, or from the SQA website.

Learners are also recommended to download SQA’s My Study Plan app (available through the App Store and Google Play) through which they can create their own personalised study plan based on their exam timetable.

Cancellation of Higher and Advanced Examinations in 2021

The Deputy First Minister John Swinney has announced the cancellation of Higher and Advanced Higher examinations in 2021. Education Resources has made the following response to this latest news.

‘We acknowledge the Scottish Government’s announcement that Highers and Advanced Highers will not take place in 2021. We await full details on arrangements for those qualifications next year and will update schools, parents and carers as soon as possible.’

COVID-19 Information

Should your daughter/son develop any of the symptoms associated with COVID-19 while in school, we shall contact you immediately and ask that you pick her/him up as soon as possible. If your daughter/son has any siblings at school we shall also arrange for them to go home.

We advise that you should immediately book a COVID-19 test for the child who is symptomatic and keep all children at home until the outcome of the test is known.

If the test is negative, the symptomatic young person (and their siblings) can then return to school. If the test is positive the symptomatic young person should self-isolate for 10 days and family members for 14 days. Should another member of the family develop the symptoms associated with COVID-19, she/he should book a test straight away.

It will be extremely helpful if parents and the school keep in touch while we await the outcome of the test and then liaise about the outcome.

COVID-19 symptoms:

            high temperature/fever;

            a new continuous cough;

            change to or loss of sense of smell or taste.
