Below are some suggested activities to support your child’s learning.

 

Phoneme Activities Spelling Activities

 

  • Make the phonemes with playdough
  • Draw a picture of something beginning with the phoneme
  • Practice the formation on a whiteboard, paper, sand, salt etc.
  • Point to each phoneme and ask your child to say it loud. If they are finding any tricky remind them of the phoneme, ask them to repeat it and come back to it later
  • Say the phoneme out loud and ask your child to point to them and repeat them
  • Say a word and ask your child to identify the phonemes they can hear in it
  • Give your child a phoneme and ask them to generate words with that phoneme. Can they tell you whereabouts the phoneme is in the word; the start, the middle or the end
  • Make flashcards for each word together
  • Point to each word and ask your child to read it. If they are finding it tricky remind them of the word, ask them to repeat it and come back to it later
  • Ask your child to count how many letters the word has
  • Play bingo: Ask your child to write down three of their words and as you call them out they can tick them off of their list. When they shout bingo ask your child to read the words aloud
  • Write the words in chalk on the pavement
  • Hunt for the words in their books
  • Trace a word on their back with your finger and have them guess what word it was
