Weekly check in

Hello Girls & Boys,

I hope you are all well and finally today and tomorrow it looks like we will have some sunshine ☀️ so make sure you are out enjoying it!

I promised some of you a story about an incident involving Lubo this past weekend so here it is…

On Saturday he was out with his daddy on an early morning walk up a hill. All was going well and Lubo was loving life running up and down as well as taking in all the lovely smells. They were almost at the top of this very big hill when they passed a field of sheep. Now as you know Lubo is a bit cheeky but he’s been on lots of walks like this before, passed lots of sheep and other farm animals and never bothered. But there was something about Saturday that was different, he had a very cheeky glint in his eye. Just as they were passing the sheep, he stopped and stared and then moved a bit closer. His daddy thought about putting him back on his lead but then thought “no he’ll be fine, he’s seen lots of sheep and never done anything” and called him back. Lubo didn’t answer. Lubo moved a bit closer again and again didn’t answer when called. Before his daddy could even think of getting his lead back on him he was off. Off like a shot! He went into full flight, chasing the 6 sheep and 1 ram all the way down the hill. Lubo is quick but who knew sheep were quicker? They managed to stay about a meter ahead of Lubo the whole time and just ran and ran. They were obviously scared of him 😢 The sheep ran towards the farm house which by this time his daddy could see two giant bulls close by. Robert was calling on him at the top of his voice but he just wouldn’t come back. He too then had to run down the side of this huge hill to try and get him back, falling as he went, but Lubo was gone.

10 minutes passed and he couldn’t find him anywhere. As you can imagine Robert was getting really worried that something had happened to Lubo especially because he had seen the bulls. He was just about to phone me to break the terrible news when he saw this tiny grey speck appear at the very bottom of the hill. He kept shouting “Lubo” and the speck started to get a bit bigger until such times as he was standing right in front of his daddy covered in sheep poo and twigs 💩 😂 While Robert was very cross with him and put him straight on the lead, he did feel the biggest relief ever that he came back. He didn’t speak to him the rest of the way home but his real punishment came in the form of the longest bath ever (which he hates) to get all the poo and twigs off him! I think he might think twice about doing that again!

What a drama eh? Have your pets ever done anything as naughty?

Lubo was very cheeky and guess we now know that he can’t ever be full trusted to walk off the lead even up a huge hill with no one else a round! He is not an aggressive dog at all so I know he wouldn’t have hurt the sheep but I think he just thought it was a game of chase or maybe he was auditioning for the role of a sheep dog? Who knows! All we know is we were very lucky something worse didn’t happen and thankfully all the sheep were fine too!

Here is a picture of the bold boy before the drama unfolded

Anyway less about Lubo, he’ll be thinking he’s famous! Mrs McGarvey had put a message on the app which I imagine a lot of you and your parents would have seen. It asked that you share an act of kindness that you have done . It might be helping a younger brother or sister with their school work or tidying your room or even just saying something kind to another person. If you can think of something then please share what it was when you are popping on to say hello.

As always if you have any pictures of you undertaking home learning or of your act of kindness, and you would like to share them then please send them to the following email address;

gw18burnsidephotos@glow.sch.uk

As this weekend is a holiday weekend (Friday & Monday) please if you can say hello either today or tomorrow.

Take care and enjoy the ☀️

Lots of love

Mrs Graham xx

Home learning 18/05/20

Good Morning Room 6,

Welcome back to another week of home learning! I’m so proud of you all for the level of engagement over the last few weeks Room 6. I have to admit boys and girls that my favourite topics are Ancient Egypt  and Under the Sea!  There is so much to discover. I have to give a shout out to Sophia who appeared on Lets Go Live with her knitted sea creatures. What a claim to fame Sophia! Could you please share a photo with us? Please share any photos with me of the “makes” you have so cleverly made boys and girls, Mrs Graham and I would love to see them. Below is a photo of Ena’s diorama. She said she wanted to make a bedroom for a mermaid. She did it all by herself and wanted to share it with you.

My wee girl Ena, (5) made this ocean diorama, inspired by Maddie & Greg o Go Live. She said it’s a mermaid’s bedroom 🧜🏻‍♀️

Mrs Graham has been very busy writing reports for you all as you know and from next week we are going to be sharing the Monday blog again. I’ll keep Studyladder  and Easi-maths updated and give you “Under the Sea” activities, and Mrs graham will plan some literacy, numeracy and fun activities. We will both be here for you to leave comments.

Enjoy your week Room 6,

Mrs Mirner : )

Literacy

Another lovely resource from Talk  4 Writing. Work through this at your own pace

Numeracy

  • Access DK 10 minute a day app to practise your tables
  • Visit easi-maths on your glow page and complete 3x 20 minute sessions.
  • Go onto Studyladder and complete some of the number activities.

Under the Sea

This week I’d like to focus on some of the wonderful creatures we can find in our oceans.  One of my favourites is the sea turtle.  The National geographic kids website is a great source for facts, information and activities. This week I’d like you to explore the website, go on a sea creature fact finding mission! Below is the direct link to the Sea Turtle page, but down the right, you will find lots of other sea creatures to discover.

https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/animals/sea-life/turtle-facts/

Choose a sea creature that interests you and create a fact-file about it. You could do this on paper or using power-point. Include information about where it lives (which zone, where in the world) What does it eat, how does it survive  and what does it look like? Feel free to use other websites or any books you have.

I’ m sure many of you already know that this week Maddie and Gregg are doing programmes about the Science Behind Magic. We are quite excited to watch and  do some of the makes they come up with this week.  Arran and Ena still have lots of Under the Sea makes to complete from last weeks shows too.

ICT

I imagine many of you will be spending more time using a computer keyboard. the BBC dance mat typing programme is really good for improving your typing skills.

For Fun

Ikea have some cool den building ideas! (Sorry grown ups 😬 !!) Our house is covered in dens and caves and various places for teddies and dollies to live and have leisure time. Its fun, but make sure you ask a grown up before you do it!

Don’t forget that BBC bitesize are doing online lessons if you are looking for something to keep you busy indoors.

Don’t forget to stay in touch with us and share photos of your learning!

Hello 👋

Good morning girls and boys?

I just wanted to pop on to say hello and see how you all are? I hope you’ve been well and still being kept busy with the home learning tasks being set for you.

Mani and Lubo have been keeping me busy along with writing all your reports. It has actually been really lovely because let’s face it, you are all pretty great in room 6 aren’t you?

If you can pop on to say hello either today or tomorrow to this post or Mrs Mirner’s check in yesterday then that would be great!

Have a lovely day and speak soon.

Mrs Graham x

PS this was Mani making the most of some wood in the garden. He was very upset when his daddy had to actually use it 😢  Least we know what he’ll be asking Santa for this year ! Lol x

Maddie Moate & Check in

Hi Room 6,

Who is watching Maddie Moate every day for her Oceans Week shows? It’s absolutely brilliant! They also give great ideas for Ocean themed crafts. Have any of you made some of the things she suggests? Please share photos of your crafts below. Or email them to me. We plan to make the sharks mouths and the Diorama. If you haven’t already watched you can catch up on YouTube. Please use this as our weekly check in station too.

Hope you’re all safe, well and enjoying some of the activities.

Mrs Mirner 🐠

Home learning 11/05/20

Good Morning everybody,

I hope you all managed to make the most of the lovely weather we’ve been getting. It was our dog, Lottie’s 3rd birthday on Saturday and so we went on a big walk with her to celebrate. Lottie loves lockdown because her humans are always around to play with her and give her loads of cuddles. We are trying to look at the positives of lockdown in our house. Its not always easy  and sometimes I know its hard to be enthusiastic when we miss our friends and family so much. I find that getting up and moving can really help me to feel positive and so the first activity I’ve set for you this week is an active one, involving all the family.  Make up a workout, using the letters of your name. Have some fun and pretend  to be Jo Wicks –  get the whole family involved.  Look at the video link below to find which exercise goes with each letter of your name.

Studyladder & Easi-maths

I am absolutely delighted that so many of you have accessed these programmes. Did you know that you can change the appearance of your avatar, as well as buy things for your studyladder room using coins that you earn for completing tasks? I have added more activities for you to complete. Try to do a little every day on study ladder and at least 3 20 minute sessions per week on easi-maths.

Literacy

As always, look at the tabs for new spelling words. Pencils & Rubbers: this is a revision week for you, so practise the words already there. Use the active spelling strategies for 15 minutes each day and then have someone test you on Friday to assess your progress.

Talk for Writing have produced excellent home learning resources. This week I’d like you to work through the following:

 Maths

  • Use the DK 10 minutes a day app to practise the times tables of your choice.
  • Here are some ideas for practical maths activities. Rather than visiting a shop with an adult, why not set up a shop in your house with household items. You are the shop keeper, so you are in charge of giving items prices and calculate the change given. cfe-n-322-first-level-amazing-maths-day-cfe-homework-grid_ver_1(1)

Under the Sea

How did you get on discovering the different Oceanic Zones? Arran really enjoyed making an Ocean in a jar. This week our topic learning is to tune into Maddie Moate’s youtube channel every day at 11am. She’s doing a whole week of programmes about oceans!  It’s been reccommended by Nuria and her grown-ups – thank you!! I’m sure we will all learn lots. Maddie Moate is a new discovery for me and her programmes look really good.

Don’t forget to email  me with any photos of your learning at gw16mirnererica@glow.sch.uk

Take care and stay safe everybody,

Mrs Mirner : )

Easi-maths

Good morning everybody,

I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful sunshine yesterday! I have checked Easi-maths and for some reason some of the triangles did not have their level recorded. It must not have saved correctly. I have fixed the problem now and you should all have activities. The way it works is that Easi-maths starts you at the level I have set  for you and it assesses you as you go along making the questions easier or more challenging depending on how you are getting on.

Have a go and as always, let me know if you have any problems.

Enjoy the long weekend Room 6,

Mrs Mirner

Weekly check in to say hello

Good morning girls and boys,

I hope you are all well and being kept busy with all the great activities set for you on Studyladder. It’s meant to be lovely and ☀️ the next couple of days so hopefully you are able to enjoy some of it outside.

Given its a shorter school week this week this is your chance to pop on and say hello, just so we know you are all OK. We really are missing you lots!

Mani was busy in the garden last weekend helping his daddy build some things. I think I might have my very own Bob the Builder on my hands 👷🏼‍♂️. He was a bit cheeky tho as he kept hiding some of his daddy’s tools in his playhouse and it took us ages to find them! He said he had a bit of DIY to do himself but I don’t know so much, what do you think?

Lots of love

Mrs Graham x

Home learning 04/05/20

Good Morning boys, girls and grown-ups,

First of all I want to reiterate that Mrs Graham and I are thinking of you all and really miss being in school with all your cheery wee faces! Everything I post here is to simply keep you going during this difficult time. We know that some families may not be able to complete these activities because we know that many of your grown ups are very busy working. We also know that some families are relying on some help from school to keep you all busy, so we are sharing some ideas here. When  you come back to school we will pick up where we left off and nobody will have been left behind. The main thing is that you are safe, happy and healthy. If your grown up wants you to do some of these jobs then you must do them, just as you would in the classroom.   If you can manage to do some yourself then that’s fantastic! If you don’t get a chance for one reason or another then that’s also ok. Please do keep in touch with us, even if its just a wee “hello”.

Mrs Mirner : )

Studyladder

I’m very impressed with all those of you who have been working on studyladder this week! I can see you’re making super progress.  I have added more tasks to it for you to complete this week. Keep up the hard work!

If you need a login, please email me on gw16mirnererica@glow.sch.uk

BBC Bitesize

BBC bitesize have now begun showing daily lessons. We are “year 2” because its based on English schools which work differently. Its a super resource, with a good variety of subjects. If you’re on a tablet and feeling a little bored then this will help keep your brain active. I’ve included some more info here: https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/bbc-bitesize-lesson-support/

Here is this week’s schedule:  https://bam.files.bbci.co.uk/bam/live/content/zjnxt39/pdf#sa-link_location=blocks&intlink_from_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fbitesize%2Farticles%2Fznbnscw&intlink_ts=1588515590953-sa

Maths

  • Using your glow account, click on the RM easi-maths tile. I have updated your levels on this – its a useful programme which has lots of maths activities. It needs Flash Player to work, so is best on a laptop rather than a phone/tablet. I understand that this may not be possible for everyone, but it’s another option for those who have access. You should aim for 3 sessions of about 15-20 minutes per week, but feel free to do more.
  • If you have a printer, then there is a fantastic resource produced by Foster & Partners https://www.designboom.com/architecture/foster-partners-architecture-from-home-challenges-children-04-28-2020/ It allows you to design and build your very own city using paper. I’d absolutely love to see some cities designed by room 6. I’m sure there are some budding architects amongst you. Email me with photos of your cities, make sure you aren’t in the photos though as I’d love to share them.
  • Keep practising your tables and learn-its . Use the app DK 10 minutes a day – its free, and very useful.
  •  Triangles and Squares – please complete the following sheets (If you don’t have a printer, just do it on paper ) : ordering 3d numbers        times tables sheet
  • Circles – please complete the following sheets (if you don’t have a printer just do it on paper) ordering 2d numbers      repeated addition

Literacy

  • Choose another book from Oxford Owl tile in Glow and practise reading it every day. If you go to the E- library you can choose a book from your book bank level. ( Your book bands are as follows: Rowlings: Gold, Dahls: Purple, Kinneys: Blue.) Using the information you find in your book, design a new front cover for the book you read. Summarise the book by drawing a picture for the beginning, the middle and end with a sentence or 2 to explain the main points.
  •  Each day, practise your new spelling words using the active spelling strategies of your choice. On Friday, ask a grown up or sibling to test your progress.
  • Did you find a new word last week? This week start your own dictionary of new words. Add one or 2 this week and every week try to add more. You’ll have really interesting dictionaries by the end of term! (There will probably be words you don’t know in your reading book on Oxford Owl)

Topic

I hope you enjoyed learning about the 5 Oceans of the world last week. This week we are thinking about the different layers of the ocean, often called oceanic zones. I have included some reading and questions about this. You’ll see that it appears 3 times. 1 star at the bottom is the least difficult with 3 stars being the most difficult. Ill let you decide which one you’d like to do. under the sea layers comprehension

Sometimes you’ll read that there are 5 zones in the ocean, and sometimes they may say 3. It depends on how much detail they are giving.

There are lots of great video clips to watch on Youtube about the layers of the Ocean.  Have a look, I have included one link, but you’ll find lots. Make sure you have your grown-ups permission to watch YouTube. I always like to be beside Arran when he’s exploring this website! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHVE4B-UjmM

This is a good idea for an Ocean in a jar! I know that you probably don’t have 3 different shades of blue paper, so you could use crayons or pencils to colour it instead. We have to use our imaginations a little in these strange times!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15CL4D41e30

For Fun

  • Make a quiz for your family to take part in. You could do a few questions each on different topics such as books, films, general knowledge, music, and under the sea. You could make it true or false, or multiple choice answers a, b, c or d. Let your imagination run wild! Use books or google to help you.
  •  Make a prize for the winner of your quiz.  Arran baked biscuits this week as his prize and Ena made a certificate.

Design a superbear competition

Good morning girls and boys,

I hope you are all well this week. It’s great to hear from Mrs Mirner about all the people that have requested their Studyladder login so far. It’s a brilliant resource to keep you all busy and learning while all the time having fun too.

As you know Mrs Graham and Mani are big John Lewis fans so I was excited the other day when I came across this competition to design a superhero bear that that will be made and sold in stores later on in the year. I thought some of you might want to give it a go and enter. How amazing would it would be if it was a winning Burnside bear? 🐻

I’ve attached links below with details of how you enter as well as the template. I believe the closing date is 5pm on the 8th May.

Good luck and keep me posted.

Love Mrs Graham x
