Welcome back!

We welcomed our happy new starts! 🙂

We also welcomed our new Modern Apprentice-

Miss Young who will be doing her second year placement with us.

We’ve made good use of the loose parts this week & have been doing lots of imaginative play with them, here was a “Fire” & said it was “Hot”.

We played ‘Families’ together and were great at looking after each other.

We created our own place mats for snack & lunch times, this sparked lots of conversations about different types of food and which ones are our favorites.

The kitchen was turned into ‘A shop’ & we used the till and spoke about different money and quantities.

“Look it’s orange”.

We experimented how high we could get the blocks to stack then turned them into a road to balance on, we said “The floor is lava” so had to very carefully balance along!

We’ve liked having orange sand this week, we added lots of different loose parts to it for filling up and pouring. Some of us even liked having vehicles in it.

The playdough has been popular to create lots of different things this week, mainly “Cakes”.

We made some carrot cake muffins upon a Child’s request, we were great at following the recipe to grate the carrots, measure the ingredients and mixing with help from Mrs Morris! We said “They smell yummy” whilst they were cooking in the oven.

“I’m doing my homework”
Writing numbers with the drawing pad.

.

We liked being back in our outdoor area & have been doing lots of different things out there including block play, energetic play using equipment, water and sand play and being back role playing in our boat.

^ We’ve had lots of happy faces like this one being back in nursery! 🙂

Last week of term!

Following on from The children role playing ‘Going shopping’ we took the check out and till out this week, we found some swimming costumes and clothes to buy along with the groceries.

We did lots of climbing, balancing and running over

at the football pitch.

We used the parachute out in the wind,

we went around it, over it and under it, holding it

carefully so it didn’t blow away!

The children said they were looking for Frog Hoppers in the cuckoo spit found on flowers, they found not one but seven of them! We had a conversation about Frog Hoppers colour, shape and how many legs it had. The children discovered it was an ‘insect’ because of it having 6 legs. The children helped one another look for more frog hoppers by looking around for cuckoo spit and said “They live on the spit”.

“Look at this baby caterpillar”

We watched a  clip about Super Tato (From The Sue Hendra books We’ve been reading) and found it hilarious!

Miss Morrison brought in some crabs, lobsters, starfish & a scabbymans head that was caught at the creels. We spoke lots about the different types of crabs and the facts about each creature.

We then walked down to the beach to release the creatures back into the sea and watched them move freely through the water.

We found some “treasure” and some “welks” whilst at the beach too.

Sports Day

Everybody did amazing at taking part in the races at sports day and cheering each other on.

“We’ve made a swimming pool, This side is for the big guys and this one is for the little guys”.

The train track has been popular, we worked together to fit the track together and figured that lots of the trains could stick together because they had magnets on them.

We had a ‘Colin the Caterpillar’ come to play at Nursery for the final day before the Holidays, he chomped a lot of leaves throughout the day so we thought he must be like The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Happy Friday everyone! :)

With the paint this week we used rollers instead of brushes and looked at the different colours we mixed and the pattern each roller made.

We made “A castle” using the blocks this week, great team work was done to plan how to do it and then create it.

This then led on to bring the Duplo Castle set out which we were great at building independently, even the tricky bits! We especially liked the “Fire breathing dragon” that lived in the castle.

We had a visit from ‘Shelby’ and ‘Little Dude’, we learnt lots of facts about tortoises from the parent who brought them in and got to feed them some flowers too. Thank you for visiting us! 🙂

One of the children told us “If I was a tortoise I’d eat apples”.

We made our own necklaces and bracelets using the large selection of new beads and were very proud of them.

We practiced some sports day events at the football pitch, it was great to have so much space and some suntoo!

The Primary Sixes came to speak to us about Bike Safety and the importance of helmets and did some helmet pictures with us.

– Nature –

We visited the Pond and found lots of things in the surroundings, We seen lots of Painted Lady Butterflies, bumblebees and some spiders too,

We were managing taking risks by climbing the trees independently.

“We’re the three little pigs in the house”.

We said we were ‘Mams’ and we were ‘Cooking’ for our Babies.

We used loose parts from around the playground and said we were adding “Sugar”. We then sat down and said we were ‘Having Dinner’.

We said the blocks were ‘Raspberry and Strawberry chewing gum’.

We wanted to take back some of the nature items from the playground and chose water and colouring to mix in with them.

We said the gloop was “Sticky”.

We expressed an interest in role playing Doctors so took out the Hospital box which sparked lots of conversations and learning around job roles.

Playing ‘Doctors and Nurses’.

We took down Doctor notes for each ‘patient’ and helped them get better with bandages and ‘Strawberry medicine’.

We requested to take the car mat and cars outdoors.

We made a fresh batch of playdough and picked orange food colouring to add to it, we said we thought the new children that were visiting would like orange!

“I’ve made a Birthday cake”.

We used the paddling pool for something different this week, we thought it was very cosy and comfy!

Happy weekend everyone!

We love messy play so this week we had spaghetti and moon sand, the children then added Sea life as they thought it looked like a beach.

We’ve loved mark making in all areas around the nursery this week & have seen some great drawings and progressions in writing.

We were ‘performing’ on stage for Miss Morrison to some music.

We were scooping & transporting stones and watching them flow down the pipe whilst doing great team work.

“We’ve made a tower”.

Love Learning Love Life Day.

We were all great at being brave and performing what we’ve been learning with Joy in front of the whole school and Parents / Carers.

We’ve revamped our Quiet space with some sensory resources, twinkly lights and pictures. We’ve liked having a dark space to ‘relax’ and look at the colours of different lights.

We like reading stories to each other in the area.

“Miss Hay watch me jump up here”.
“I think the sheep is looking for his Mam”.
“This is for you Miss Hay.” – Thanks for being so kind! 🙂

“We’re cooking Dinner in our house, I’m the Mammy”.

“What are you cooking for Dinner?”

“I’m adding Salt and vinegar”.

“We’re making a submarine”.

  • The boys worked together well to source loose parts from around the park and figured out how to get them all to fit together.
Playing hide & seek in the little house.

Practicing our balancing and risk taking.

‘Rowing the boat’.

We loved using the mud kitchen, we found lots of nature resources to add in to our pots and used great imagination to ‘cook’ some “Butter cupcakes” and some “Chicken’. We then put it inside the ‘oven’ to cook. We said we set the temperature to “Fifty Nine”.

“I’ve made you some chocolate soup”.
We were caring for the babies and giving them a wash out in the sun.

We had great fun spinning around in the spinning top then hiding under it.

“Here I am”.

Driving our nice clean boat after we gave it a good scrub. We asked for some colouring in the the water and mixed it in with bubbles and said “Look it’s changed colour”.

A busy week

We welcomed a new child to our nursery this week 🙂
We explored the blocks and found letters to spell out names.
Following on from a child’s bringing in a musical instrument, Miss Morrison brought in her accordion and played us some music, we danced and did the actions to Incy wincy spider.

We practiced our ball skills in gym, we rolled them to see who’s could reach the other side the quickest.

We practiced throwing into the basket ball hoop.

We were great at listening to the instructions  from Mrs Drozdowska. We decided our boat needed a wash so worked together to scrub it clean again.

Our windows needed a scrub too!

We got very excited when it started snowing and danced around the garden in it.

We watched it fall and melt on our hands.
“I’ve made gingerbread, it needs to cook in the oven”
We seen lots of flowers whilst out for our walk and discovered there were various different colours, sizes and smells of flowers.
We seen a puppy whilst we were out and about too, it was very friendly and we were very gentle with it.
We used loose parts to make a ‘Bonfire’ and said we were having ‘Popcorn’ and ‘Marshmallows’ around it.

We were kind and helped one another with the sunflower planting.

Sunflowers

Looking at the seeds

Today we were planting sunflower seeds together.

We filled up the pots with compost and made a hole with a stick then we popped in the seed.

Everyone has their own pot with their name on it.

We decided that the most sunny spot was the window sill.

We are excited to watch them grow.

OUT & ABOUT

The Spring tide was so high there was no beach!

it was such a lovely day last week that we had an early snack and spent two hours exploring near the school. First of all we went to the Taing beach and discovered there was no beach! The tide was really high. We found lots of stones and had fun throwing them into the sea. We tried different styles of throwing to see which one worked the best.

We found a Scaddie Man’s Head (sea urchin)

We found a big lump of frog spawn in the ditch

After the beach we went for a walk in the Stromfirth road to look for frog spawn. We were lucky to find two big lumps. We are looking forward to going back soon to see if there are tadpoles or even frogs!

WORLD BOOK DAY

We all dressed up for World Book Day. Lots of the children brought their favourite book to school with them and dressed up as a character from that book.

We played outside in our costumes

It was so sunny, we spent time outside in our costumes. We were all excited and did lots of role play with the outfits.

Later on we dressed up in some of the nursery fancy dress and swapped costumes with each other.

Throughout the day we looked at all the different books and listened to and read stories.

The staff all were different characters from books
Woody the cowboy from Toy Story
The princess and the frog

Lerwick Up-Helly-Aa Trip

On Tuesday we had an exciting trip to Lerwick to see the jarl squad and the Galley.

We were all dressed up cosy so we didn’t get cold waiting around. Everyone was excited about going on the bus. Our first stop was in the centre of Lerwick to see the jarl squad.

Everyone was so well behaved and patient waiting for the Vikings to arrive. Then we saw them marching down the street right past where we were standing. We couldn’t believe how loud the bagpipes were!

We got a good spot on the pier and we could see the big red galley-boat. We heard the Vikings singing and saw their outfits up close. They had axes and sheilds with a dragons head on them.

After that we all got back on the bus and went to Clickimin Centre for snack and soft play. On the way it started hailing and we were lucky to be able to get exercise inside, away from the wild weather. We really enjoyed running around the huge area and climbing over the obstacles and sliding down the slopes. We had big beach balls which we kicked around too. Miss Laurenson got a big speaker and we listened to music while we played.

Soon it was time to go back to nursery and we were all hungry for lunch after our big trip.

Thanks so much to all the parent helpers who joined us and made the outing possible.

The bus was fun
Excited to be on the bus

Granny came too!
