World Book Day

All three departments celebrated World Book Day these past two days following our days off school.  Well done to the Nursery and Primary pupils and staff for their fantastic efforts in dressing up as a character from their favourite book.

During their recent English lessons, Secondary 2 pupils have been planning and preparing activities to lead with each of the Primary classes.  They had to consider the pupil’s age and stage and plan suitable, engaging activities to present in their groups.  This was a challenging task for the Secondary 2 pupils but they did well and the activities were enjoyed by each of the Primary classes.

Secondary 1 and Secondary 3 pupils were also involved in paired reading activities with the early year’s classes and it was lovely to see the different ages mix and enjoy reading together.  Thank you to Marina Holzheimer and the Secondary pupils for their time and efforts.

The lower Primary classes were also treated to a workshop with Ann-Marie Anderson.  She read her Peerie Oorick book to them and then they each had the opportunity to create their own Peerie Oorick.  Thank you to Ann-Marie for her engaging story and activity as well as going above and beyond by dressing up as Snow White.

In addition to all of the above, the Primary teachers planned various World Book Day activities including live lessons, draw-a-longs and book reviews.  Well done to everyone for their contributions!

S1 and S2 Home Economics – cooking with Scottish pork

We were able to secure funding from the Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) School Meat Voucher Scheme, which is an industry initiative to help combat the obesity epidemic sweeping Scotland by helping teach secondary age children how to cook quality, nutritious meals by providing home economics departments of secondary schools in Scotland with a voucher to spend on Scotch Beef UK GI, Scotch Lamb UK GI and Specially Selected Pork from a local butcher shop.

Pupils in S1 and S2 Home economics classes used pork loin steaks sourced from Scalloway Meat Company to make sweet ginger pork chow mein with plum sauce.

They were able to develop their practical cooking skills, and also learn more about the importance of sustainability and using locally sourced ingredients.

It also gave us an opportunity to find out more about the traditions associated with Chinese New Year, which took place on 22nd January this year.

Here are some photos of pupils preparing their chow mein, and a link to the recipe so that you can try it at home:
