Welcome to the Whalsay School Website and Blog. Whalsay School is a non-denominational school serving the island of Whalsay. We have approximately 165 pupils, spread through 3 departments – Nursery, Primary and Secondary.
Our school’s mission is to work and operate as a ‘Connected Community of Learners‘; recognising the importance of working together and continually learning to support our young people.
Our school’s values are:
- Belonging – We aim for our pupils to experience the safety, happiness and security that comes from Belonging to a strong community
- Health – We recognise and value the importance of sports, leisure and cultural activities in the community of Whalsay and aim for our pupils to have many learning experiences in these areas.
- Enjoyment – We believe in pupils having a voice in the design of their learning experiences and enjoyment of the learning process will lead to better outcomes for our young people.
- Creativity – We aim to nurture and celebrate our pupils creative talents with active, outdoor and play-based learning experiences delivered to compliment learning through school trips and visitors.
- Responsibility – We aim for our pupils to take responsibility for their own learning in preparation for being positive contributors to the local community and wider society.
Primary pupils move into our Secondary Department where they stay until the end of S4. At this time they can transfer to Anderson High School for S5/6, go to college or leave school.
Being the only school on the isle, Whalsay School has always been totally comprehensive in its intake. Our aim is to meet the needs of every individual by offering a wide variety of courses, leading towards continuing education of all types at school, college or university.
We aim to give the widest possible educational opportunity to every pupil and to encourage each pupil to develop their full potential, by developing their skills and talents.
As well as endeavouring to develop the academic potential of our pupils, the school takes its duty to develop the pupil’s social and moral values seriously. Hopefully, when each pupil is finished his or her school career, he or she will be equipped to play a full and meaningful role in society.
