Thank-you so much to Mona and Sven for coming in to talk to us about South Africa. Mona is from Shetland but she worked as a midwife in South Africa for many years. Mona and Sven both lived in South Africa through the terrible apartheid era. It was very interesting to hear how much the country has changed since then. Mona spoke to us about Nelson Mandela and how he stood up for equal rights for everyone in South Africa. Mona even met Nelson Mandela and showed us a picture! Thankfully South Africa is now a democracy and the racist apartheid laws no longer exist, however the apartheid regime left a lot of people in South Africa living in extreme poverty. Mona told us about how she wanted to help children who were living in poverty so she set up a charity called ‘From Shetland with Love’. Mona spends a lot of her time fundraising in Shetland then she goes over to South Africa and uses the money raised to help orphanages and schools in South Africa and Lesotho. We had a great time listening to Mona’s interesting presentation and learning how to sing the South African National Anthem in the language of the Zulu people.

The children were so excited to see Mrs Cook again. Here are some photos of the children singing French songs with Mrs Cook. There was lots of laughter from the primary 4-7 group, their song had lots of actions to go with it! 🙂

Mairianne received her token the other day from the Moorfield Hotel. Mairianne was runner up in the Moorfield Hotel’s Christmas card competition and won a gift token for a meal at the hotel. For her Christmas card design Mairianne painted a beautiful background using cold colours then drew a christmas tree in silver. It was a very lovely Christmas card.

Our dinner lady Sharon finished working at our school before the Easter holidays. Sharon did lots of things for the school, she helped with the Christmas concert and the music festival and much more. We wanted to say thank-you to Sharon for everything she has done for us so we decided we would have a surprise tea party for Sharon at the school. We invited our families and asked Sharon to come into school for a ‘visit’ 🙂 we baked a cake and some fancies for the tea party. Here are some pictures of the bakers at work!

Here’s a photo of Mairianne with her friends from Mossbank Primary School enjoying some French pastries at the French day at Mossbank Primary School. All the children from Mossbank, Ollaberry, Urafirth and North Roe Primary School had a wonderful morning learning French together. We had great fun speaking French and playing games. Thank-you for having us Mossbank Primary School and thank-you for the yummy French food at snack time.

We had a great day on Friday when Michael from Dogs Against Drugs came into school to tell us about what he does to keep Shetland safe. He brought 3 of the dogs for us to meet, they do a very important job and it was fantastic to hear all about it.

Last term we went to Ollaberry Primary School for an architecture workshop. Architecture students from Strathclyde University in Glasgow were there with lots of exciting activities prepared for us to take part in. We had a fantastic day with all the children from Ollaberry, Urafirth and Mossbank Primary School. The activities gave us an insight into what a career in architecture would be like. We left Ollaberry feeling very inspired! Lots of the children said they would like to be an architect when they grow up.
