Term 1 Week 7

Have a look below to see what P5/7 have been learning this week.

Silent Count. For our counting challenge this week, we played the ‘silent count’ game in trios or pairs. We had to count up from a given number but weren’t allowed to talk or help our group. Some groups quickly spotted patterns in the numbers and were able to count at a faster rate using this.

Film of the Week – Hercules. We’ve travelled back to Ancient Greece for our writing activities this week. Firstly, we learned about 12 different Greek gods and goddesses and then wrote our own cinquain poems about them. We then worked in pairs or trios to research mythical creatures and create fact files. Finally we wrote adventure stories based on gods and goddesses we invented.

Fire Safety. On Wednesday, Peter came in to speak to P5, 6 and 7 about bonfire safety and lithium batteries. Here are some facts we learned:

  • You have to be 5 and over to hold a sparkler
  • You have to be 18 or over to buy fireworks
  • You have to not leave bonfires unattended
  • You only hold 1 sparkler at a time
  • You should only set off 1 firework at a time
  • Never put lithium batteries in the bin unless it’s the proper bin
  • If your phone starts to swell up, contact the manufacturer
  • Only use approved chargers, with the CE sign
  • Never leave your charger on over night
  • Never, ever put batteries in your mouth

Big Question. This week we’ve been learning about sound – how it travels, vibrations and parts of the ear. In groups, we researched different Savannah animals and how they use sound and communicate. We had some excellent group presentations where once again, the creativity of the class really shone!

Term 1 Week 6

Maths – Counting Challenges. We had a go at some counting challenges this week in maths to get our brains warmed up. Mastering flexible counting in upper primary helps children easily tackle addition and subtraction problems, while making multiplication, fractions, decimals and everyday problem-solving much easier.

World Leaders – Homework Projects. I have been so impressed with all the wonderful homework projects that have been shared this week. It was lovely to see the creativity of everyone and how different each project was. Thank you for supporting the pupils at home with their projects.

STEM – Land Yachts. On Wednesday, Eleanor came in to do a STEM workshop based on Lego land yachts with us. We first did the ‘1 minute duck challenge’ whereby we all managed to make completely different ducks from exactly the same Lego pieces. Then we were tasked with creating a land yacht in pairs. There were lots of different designs, that were modified and tested, before everyone took part in the final test. Maisie and Ragnar’s yacht managed to go the furthest in the final test. At the end of the lesson, Eleanor asked the class to think of all the skills they had used and I was blown away by all they identified – problem solving, resilience, communication, critical thinking, teamwork, adapting, creativity, intelligence, focusing, building, curiosity, attention to detail, sense making, and planning. Fantastic effort P5/7!

Big Question – Life Cycles. This week we’ve been learning about life cycles of animals, in particular the life cycles of the 5 vertebrate groups. Each group was given a different animal to find out about and create something to explain their life cycle to the rest of the class. Amazing creativity and teamwork again P5/7!

Term 1 Week 5

Hi everyone. It’s Eleanor and P5/7 here with our outstanding, amazing work. Have a look below to see what we’ve been doing this week.

🐊 Roald Dahl Day. For Roald Dahl Day on Monday, we started by taking part in the ‘Enormous Crocodile Challenge’. We had to work in teams to make a crocodile from limited resources. We then were given the choice of ‘The Minpins’ or ‘Esio Trot’ and had to design a cover for it. We enjoyed doing this whilst listening to Fantastic Mr Fox.

.

Writing. For writing this week we’ve been using Aladdin as our stimulus and one of writing tasks was to write a diary entry about walking through the Agrabah market. As we’ve also been getting familiar with Canva, so we used this to create our diary entries.

Super Spelling. One of the activities we did was to go outside and do spelling hopscotch. We had to create hopscotch grids and then write our spelling words in the boxes or spell out the words as we played the game. Some people did spelling races with beads or scrabble tiles, some did sign language spelling and some did fancy letter super sentences.

Big Question – Inheritance. This week we’ve been learning about inherited and learned traits. We played a quiz of Savannah animal statements and whether ‘the thing’ was learned/acquired or inherited. Me and Isla got 12 out of 12 on the quiz which was fun, educational and interesting. We then got to choose a random pair of Savannah animals and then mixed them together to make a new species with different inherited traits. Can you guess the different animal pairs?

Thanks for the reading, have a lovely Friday and enjoy the weekend. 🦁😎😁🌞

Term 1 Week 4

Have a look at some of the things that we’ve done in P5/7 this week.

PE – Here is a snapshot of some of our PE activities with Mrs. A.

This or That. We had to take everyday objects and turn them into something else. There was a lot of creativity and ingenuity in the classroom with this task.

Maths. This week, the P7s helped us to learn two new maths games – Storm and Race to 100.

Big Question. We started by learning about Apex predators of the Savannah and worked in groups to create animal fact files. For our mindful moment, we created some ‘Zentangle Apex Predator’ artwork. We then learned about the different classifications of vertebrates and what makes an animal a mammal or bird or fish or reptile or amphibian.

Term 1 Week 3

Hello and welcome to our P5/7 blog. This week, it’s me, Megan helping to write the blog.

Writing – Alice in Wonderland. For writing this week, we have been watching clips of Alice in Wonderland as our stimulus. We wrote about falling down a rabbit hole, our adventures in our own wonderlands and how to play ‘Flamingo Croquet’. Here are some pieces of our instruction writing.

This or That. We had to build our own wonderland or do something mindful. Have a look at what we did below.

🦛🦒🐊🦓 Big Question – Animal Adaptation. We have been learning about how different animals adapt to survive where they live. We researched structural, behavioural and physiological adaptations and worked in pairs to created posters which we will turn into a class book.

Fabulous Friday. On a Friday morning, Miss Farmer is working with our class to do some ‘Maths in action’ which has a focus on baking this term. We discussed all the maths skills that are used in baking and then the first group of P5 pupils went to use these to make delicious waffles for everyone.

Thank you for reading this week’s blog. Come back next week to see what we’ve been doing.

Megan 😄

Term 1 Week 2

Hi, its Ava writing the blog this week!

♥️Marvelous Maths. 3,2,1 flip and Blooket.  3,2,1 flip- We’d all have cards and we would walk around the classroom until Mrs. A would shout stop and you would have to add up both cards. Whoever was first would stay standing up and the other person would go and sit down. Blooket- the primary 5s played Blooket for the first time this week and they all loved it.

☀️ Sunshine Spelling. We went outside in the sun to do some active spelling to practice our words.

🐉Wonderful Writing. This week we’ve used Raya and the Last Dragon as our writing stimulus. We wrote dragon adventure stories, dragon poems and created endangered animal posters. Have a look at a selection of the fabulous pieces written this week.

🐘🦬🐆🦏🦁Big Question.  For Big Question this week we were put into groups and all the groups had different animals to research. In the groups we had to make and create something about that animal and their food chain.

💭Mindful Moments. Every day after lunch we watch a calm video with breathing exercises to make us calm and focused for learning.

🐶 International Dog Day Art. For art this week, Mrs. A gave us free choice with the theme of International Dog Day. There was lots of creativity on show in the class.

I hope you enjoyed the blog this week.

BYE!♥️

Welcome to P5/7

Welcome to the class blog. Here is a look at some of the things we’ve been doing in our first week of P5/7.

This or That. This week’s ‘This or That’ tasks were themed around Cinderella. Our Necessity Network task was looking at SDG 1 (No poverty) and creating rules so that the classroom was a fair space for everyone. The pupils worked in groups to create their own charters.

Our Stardust Squad task was lots of fun and everyone was able to put their own creative spin on it.

Flexible seating. Although we have assigned seats in the class, the pupils are able to choose where to work as long as it doesn’t impact on their learning or the learning of others.
