PRIMARY 1/2 DAY OUT TO BURRA

The sun might not have been shining, but the weather did not hamper excitement from the pupils in primary 1 and 2 today, as they set off on their day out to Burra.

Our brilliant bus driver George, assisted by some very knowledgeable navigators in the front seat, drove us to Burra and firstly dropped us off at ‘The Hen Hoose’ where Wendy runs her Burra Bears business from.  She showed us inside her workshop, all the knitwear and fabrics she uses to make the bears and also the processes required for the finished product.  We saw the 3 different sizes of bears she makes and we collected Mrs Moffat’s bear she had had made.

Next, we walked over to ‘The Outpost’ where Margaret met us and we got to see emus, tortoises, goats, rabbits, pigs and wallabies.  We got to feed the animals and the bairns were highly amused at how the goats and pigs fought over the food.

We then followed Margaret to the Bridge End Hall where we enjoyed our packed lunches and had time for games and free play.

George then drove us to Bannamin beach where we spent a lovely afternoon paddling in the sea (brrrr!), finding interesting objects, climbing up among the big stones and playing on the beach.  After a fair amount of “de-sanding” our feet, we got packed up and headed back to the bus.

We had a super day in Burra and would like to say special thanks to George, Margaret Inskster and our helpers Julie, Caroline, Jacqui, Catherine and Carla.

WEEK 3 – PRIMARY 1 – LEARNING (B)LOG

This week we have enjoyed writing using Viking Runes, playing in the galley boat, making clay Viking Longhouses, watching ‘Gudrun: The Viking Princess’ and drawing and painting Viking people.

We have been learning about length and measurement, practising all the phonics we have learned so far, making a toy with Mr Rose which required elastic energy and sharing storysacks with the secondary pupils.

Finally, today we held our toy sale in class.  We were really busy organising for the sale and helping set up the class with assistance from Primary 6.  The sale was a huge success and we raised £132.20.

Primary 3/4/5 trip to Mareel and Scalloway castle

What a busy Monday Primary 3/4/5 have had. Despite chilly weather all pupils were dressed warmly and were raring to go on a very interesting school trip.  First stop was Mareel where we enjoyed the experience of watching the film ‘A Christmas Carol’ in a cinema with our classmates.  Afterwards we went into the projection room, here we found out how films get projected onto the big screen.

Explaining how 3D films work … and how 3D glasses don’t work if you put them on upside down!

With a key that big, it can surely only be for a castle door

A little play outdoors before we head home again.

Dance and games

On Tuesday we were doing Shetland dancing with Mrs Redfern and we were doing the Canadian barn dance. First we got in a circle  the male on the inside and the female on the outside. And we had to change partners every time the tune moved on.

Today the primary 6 had play leaders with the p.1 and the p.2 we played three games. P6 are learning how to lead games. The games names were duck duck goose, the clap game, stick in the mud and the animal game. By  Charlie and Max

P6 had a great time at bowling with John, Gene and Gordon. The teams are called Shooting stars, Carrots, Ninjago Ninjas, Fire, Gundrops and the Cupcakes. We all loved it. Special thanks to John, Jean and Gordon.

P7 had a lovely time at yoga while the P6s were at bowling.

On Monday we had a special visitor from parliament, Tavish Scott. We all asked him lots of questions. He invited us to come and visit him in the Parliament in Edinburgh when we go on our school trip.

Shoebox appeal 2017

On a recent trip to Shetland, Finlay Mackenzie who works for Blythswood care gave a talk to Primary pupils about the shoebox appeal. Shoeboxes are filled with gifts like shampoo, socks, a notepad, small toy and then delivered to someone in need. They are distributed to Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Pakistan, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine.  If you would like to fill a shoebox for someone this Christmas you can take it to the school office which is our local collecting point – last collection day Monday 30th October.

task force

On Monday we get into new Task Force groups for this year. The whole school got into mixed age groups. First we got a piece of paper and wrote our names in the middle then in the top left was corner was we had to write what our favourite toy was. In the top right corner we had to write what our favourite place to go was. In the bottom left corner we had to write what our  favourite food was. In the bottom right corner was what clubs we go to. We wrote about this so we could get to know each other. Then we made a group tree. We each drew our hand and wrote our names on the hands and then we decorated them with glitter and gems or whatever design you wanted. After making our hand prints we glued the hand on a picture of a tree that we made and stuck the hand on the tree. Then we had to think of a name for our group. Everyone worked together really well.
